Leak checking by evacuation is preferred these days to protect against the unknown effects of the refrigerant in the enviroment. Previous refrigerants were thought to be safe, until we found evidence otherwise. In this case, 1234yf is somewhat flammable, which you wouldn't want the evaporator leaking into the cabin.
I do enjoy not having to use that machine, all my tools are descrete, meaning I am the "programming". lol. I am an HVAC tech.
All refrigerants went sky high about 6 months ago. R410a is also going away. Get ready. End of year theses air conditioners now cant be installed
There is no shame in asking for likes and to subscribe, you are a diamond with your work ethic and helping others see the reality of what they'd otherwise get ripped off for 🙂 I used to DIY everything I could but since cars have become less DIY mechanic friendly it helps to see the actual labor that's needed on newer motors.
I wonder if the lockout features are designed in case you put the older refrigerants into the machine (not even sure if that is possible – accountant here)
All of this environmental crap is about money.. because the whole "climate change" thing is one big scam. when you take the time to look beneath surface level, you find that it's all bullshit, and it's either about money, banning shit, or assuming more control over people's lives. 1234 is a scam. Everything about it being "green" is exactly what was claimed about r134a. Just so happens that r134a's patent expired the same year 1234 came out, and suddenly r134a is "bad". Total coincidence I'm sure.
'environmentally friendly' does not mean we can just dump shit everywhere without a moment's hesitation just because a product is less harmful than its previous iterations. raping the planet costs, and we're just beginning to pay. properly taking responsibility is – thankfully – how things are going to be from now on. the days of not giving a shit whilst focusing on our needy consumerist excess are over.
The R1234yf is so expensive because it is patent protected. A joint venture between Honeywell and Du Pont expect it to be expensive for the next 20 or so years. The main 'benefit' over R134a is its relative low global warming potential.

We used to say the YF in 1234YF is Your Fucked. Cuz the damn machine takes for ever and it's very expensive

Because it was said" it is more flammable than the old r134
I see quite a number of posts who believe R-12 was "damaging" the ozone layer & creating a hole at the South Pole. It's all BS. It's really about making money & hosing the consumer on high cost of repairing A/C units. In 1988-89, A 12oz can of R-12 ranged around .79 -.99 cents a can & remember a 30lb cylinder of R-12 was about 25-35 dollars in the mid 80's.
I think it's important to remember that progress does not mean perfect. I think it's good that we're at least looking at different ways to be environmentally friendly and since it's new, it's probably still got some stuff to work out. 🙂
Wisconsin always had that law, where you couldn't buy the refill cans, going way way back… Back to R12, R134, all of it….
So, you needed a lot of lube, if you were gonna take a car in for an AC problem… then knew they had you….
OR, you could drive to Illinois, and buy the cans….. Like, from the Milwaukee Metroplex, that wasn't a terrible ride….
That being said, the changes to AC systems have always been wildly expensive, especially in those early days…. Back in the day, your R12 car would stop cooling… They couldn't fill it. Under the law, they had to refit the whole car with a R134 system… THAT would produce a stratospheric bill…. Oh wow….
I'm not sure if it was state or federal, but I also remember, when R134a came along, there all the sudden was a legal requirement, to send the tech to a school, and get a certification, and you got a card & all this stuff, that you were AC certified, and you had been advised of the laws, and how to "properly" work the machine, and all this stuff… I'm pretty sure you weren't supposed to be touching the machine, or the AC system in a car, without that certification….
Which again, back then, we thought the same thing you do now, Ray…. We were TOLD that the R134 was "much safer"… But then, all these PROCEDURES and rules and laws and all this stuff, got dumped on our heads, and threats, and we'll fire you, and all this stuff…. It felt like the R134 might be a plutonium by-product…. We didn't have to wear a giant space suit, but it sure felt like, it was radioactive, and we must be careful at all times, that not one milligram is ever released from an AC system in a car, otherwise we will all die…..
It felt weird, that they came and said "here's your new safer refrigerant product", and then laid the stack of papers on the desk and said "And here's all the new procedures and paranoia that MUST be followed…"

The price R1234YF has actually gone down some. Chrysler and Toyota started using it around 2015-2016 and it was around $1000 for a 10lb can back then. Believe it or not, these systems will run on R134A. In 2016 I had a 2016 Dodge Journey with 1243yf, and back then you couldn`t find it, so I converted a set of 1234yf guages to be able to put in 134a and it worked perfect. That vehicle is still on the road, and never had another problem with the A/C.

I can explain the price tag: There are only two manufacturers of R1234yf: Honeywell and Chemours (Dupont), both protected by patents. You find yourself in a Duopoly. Honeywell's patent expires in January 2030, so only roughly 8 years until you can expect prices to drop.

you can use 134a in a 1234yf system Cadillac did it when they first introduced the new refrigerant in their cars and there was some problem. Cannot remember what it was. The only difference from what I read is the diameter of the service port. BUT IT IS ILLEGAL TO DO so don't get any ideas.
yeah it is not ozone depleting but under the right conditions it is flammable when it is atomized and exposed to a flame. hmmmm accident, A/C running possible engine fire. or cabin fire. Sounds about right.

There are 2 area's of issues created by some, Ozone Depletion and Global Warming Potential. Don't concern yourself with these 2 indicators right now, as there will be others added in the near future. Just know R1234yf is a A2L Refrigerant (Mildly flammable) and will only be around for <15 years. The perpetual money making glitch that is Environmental. 🙂

An old mech once told me 134A was once claimed to be fine for the environment they at one point was allowed to vent that stuff to atmosphere. Then EPA turned around and found out it was hurting the ozone and put a stop to that.

The newer refigerants are actually the refrigerants we started with. Purified propane blends. Because they are classified as refrigerants us epa licensed idiots have to comply with refrigerants laws.

Rainman, thos3 were known for the schreder valve leaks(bullitins) replace every time, also known for condensor leaks. From the factory they come with dye in the oil/system. Sometimes easily diag'd.
This is my 1st exposure to 1234yf and I guess it had to happen when the patent wore off on the regular 134a … just like it did on the old R12 and DuPont had to create a need for a new-safer refrigerant ….. both times. Maybe the name should be "1234 F-You!"
Cost of refrigerants are ridiculous!!!! I'm retired from 40 years HVACR, I remember buying R-12, for low $20's for a 30 pound jug, R-22 for low 30's, R502 for about same as 22.
