In a previous video we had a look at a customers CRV that we could find anything wrong with and now we get to have a go at a customers Subaru that supposedly has some wheel speed sensor issues. After a bunch of messing nothing acted up so it is time to let this one go too. These can be the most frustrating times as a mechanic.

Here we go folk: Subaru Today not a Chevrolet what year this thing is. it's a 2013 looks like a legacy. It is the Legacy customer States the money lights on the brake light, the track The Flash and Crews all your typical Subaru stuff. We got the lawnmower man out there mowing for the seventh time this week.
We're gonna find a data link connector here. There she is. We'll get her plugged in, We'll see what we have for codes here and see if it'll be an interesting video or another dumb one. Well it's littered full of cones.
Of course we've got a Peel 500. this is pass full sometimes I don't understand your lingo as far as being active or history or pending or current. but Po 500 in the ECM a bunch of stuff in the ABS going on with that left front ABS speed sensor looks like a current says ECM fault. We might have to look into some of these, but Subarus can be kind of funky and of course you know I've got all your TPMS stuff.
so I assume it's you know, probably missing all of its sensors. but um Subaru is gonna be kind of weird. you get an engine light on, it's going to throw bright. uh you know the brake traction ABS flashing cruise light.
um so I'm not super concerned. Let's go. Um, let's go pop into our ABS we'll take it for a rip there and we'll see um ABS We want to see our wheel speed signal, see if we have one that's dropped out, or look to see if the Po500 is related to that or what that internal ECM fault is. Okay, so let's just go look at our wheel speed, see who's working and who's not and we'll go from there.
Flash brake light. Flash and cruise and the money light. Oh it looks like we have working all right, so maybe that was old. Typical Subaru fashion.
It sounds like rear wheel bearings are shot just driving down the road here. the car's here for Speedo seems to work all right. So what seems to be the problem here? Awesome. Just uh.
rear brake pedals damn near on the floor of course I need to see if you guys have a glare. probably won't go show you guys. I'm gonna pop into uh, let's Grenada here. I Went into some generic OBD2 data just to see it's a little bit easier to decipher.
So we do have a Po500 that's current and a PO 500. It's permanent and also somebody has cleared the codes because as you'll see, it has not run the whole drive cycle. We still have one monitor that's not complete. So um, you know, like anything else, we know we never get the full story.
So somebody's been clearing the codes. so let's just hop into Live data here on the generic side, see if we have a vehicle speed and uh, kind of go from there. It's interesting that the speedometer seems to be functioning. Speed sensor seems to be working very long here.
I'm headed back to the shop I was looking at that left front wheel speed sensor again. no dropouts. nothing weird happening. There looks like history codes.
all right. I'm gonna make note of these. we're going to clear the ABS ARA net engine getting that. PO 500 also got to appear the fact that it shows it as a current code so we might have to call the customer and I find out when you know these problems were happening. you know it shows that as a the pass fault here. but when you go into generic, OBD2 shows this big current all right. I Went ahead and cleared the codes out of the ABS and that turned off the engine light. and you know the flashing brake light.
Now it doesn't fix the problem with the rear bearing screaming and the brake pedal here going to the floor mat. But it does tell us that the engine light is on because of that left front wheel speed sensor problems that it has whenever it has those problems. So let's pick it up. give it a visual inspection.
I'd say um I did save all the code numbers out of it so we can. You know we can look into that. Um, but let's go visual inspection first. Maybe we'll see something funky there on the left front.
I did notice you know driving. Obviously we could hear the bearings in the back or bad. uh when I step onto brakes. you know the steering wheel shakes your coffee for you and you know the pedals on the floor.
So anyways, let's keep trucking. Let's see if a gander just coming over. Just looking at the rear brakes, let me see, the rotors are pretty well. solid.
Arrested I'm sure the pads and stuff receive stuff, so this is probably part of our low pedal issues, you know. Plus like I say the rear wheel bearing tile in there. It's about the same on this side. Anyhow, we'll go up here to the left front that's got the brand new CV axle.
Something's been after the speed sensor because it's got classic zip tie, so perhaps they've been heaving some parts at it. Yeah, because at Cbxel is brand new. one. On this side, it's still the OG So yeah, it looks like they've probably been trying to make an attempt to fix this, which tells me it's probably intermittent at this point.
Let me just call the customer and get the see if we can get the story. Sometimes you can, sometimes you can't So I Spoke with this lady. She said that her husband had done the work on. He put the CV axle in the speed sensor and something else.
a ground strap is what it sounded like. She wasn't sure if he had ever cleared any codes or anything afterwards. So so we don't We don't really know because clearly we can see that when the components are functioning that the light should may not. you know.
And like I said, we cleared the ABS code. So now I've got her down here I've got all four wheel speed sensors up there. I'm just going to take her for a rip, probably down near the ice cream store-ish area. Okay and then we'll come back and at that point, I'm gonna ship it.
I Told this thing's gonna need rear brakes and wheel bearings and there's some loose stuff in the front end tie rod ball joint over there so it's going to need some work. but work that doesn't pertain to this. So like I said, you gotta kind of tread lightly on that. but let's go for a rep and probably not fix anything. So far nothing. all the wheel speed sensors are working, bearings just screaming back there. exhaust is boating is shaking I think we're gonna just let this one go if it is a problem. it's intermittent and I just can't be driving this thing all day long waiting for it tacked up.
please to turn around and I think probably just wait for this thing to cool down a little bit here. I Guess that's what we can do there. that's the way. I Want something with no fat, no sugar? She handed me a napkin.
but have a nice day we got some strawberry shake. We're heading back. We're gonna Park this thing and move on to bigger and better items. I Guess this is it folks.
No drop offs, no glitches, no lights, no nothing. I'm done. That's it for this one folks. I'm not going to spend any more time driving it I Think we've done everything that we could.
uh, you know we addressed the customer concern. We looked at the you know why the ABS light and stuff was on which was causing the engine light which as stated that it was having problem with that left front wheel speed sensor which obviously that site has a new sensor and a new axle and I'm curious to know as if maybe you know once the customer did that, maybe they never cleared the ABS light out of it. Obviously it won't self-clear it doesn't self-clear on this Subaru as we saw, you know, because we saw the sensor was working, we cleared the quality abs. Of course you know the engine light went out at that point so we didn't have to clear that so it didn't reset the drive cycle which is good, but there's really nothing more I can do unless we can get the car to act up.
but at this point I Can't spend. You know you can't spend all day just driving somebody's car around hoping to get it to glitch. So that's it. That's how it works.
So weeks are like this. Sometimes you get five or six days a week where it's just just monotonous. You know you just can't duplicate the customer concern. You'll have them come and take the car and drive it and they can't get it tacked up and you just have to move on and that's all we can do.
We just did I think we just did a video on a Honda I think it still sits here CRV You know that supposedly had a misfire? Came in with an O2 sensor all busted up. We put it in it, ran a full drive cycle. you know, no issues. So you do the best you can and I want you guys to do the best you can.
Leaving a comment in that comment section. Questions Comments: NC Facebook not Tick Tock though and this or whatever yours I can do it. You can do it. Thanks for watching foreign foreign.
Strawberry shake!
Hate stickers sticker on toolbox, toolbox drowning in stickers. I like it SMA!
Shot rear wheel bearings at 107k? God Subarus are JUNK. My suburban made it to 262k miles on the original rear wheel bearings and one of the fronts…Sorry Subaru snobs, suburbans are WAY better than any Subaru
I'm hungry for a burger!
Is is an original abs sensor? That China crap can cause problems as well… Jus like all other sensors best is to take oem
Got a napkin in return!😂😂😂
why no tic toc?
Nice big Naper sign Eric! Shop looks like a professional works there.😮
No ice cream for Mrs O? Missed a chance to score some points there…
My 2008 Outback used to throw abs codes (random wheel speed sensor signal) when I drive on a dirt-road at about 70-80 kmh (45-50 mph). And it is clearing itself, at least for me, after two key-drive cycles.
What I say is "Let it develop".
Noice,Noice,Yellow Corvette there (0..09) in the side lot.
You might have the owner drive it with you with them that way you know how they drive then when it happens when they drive you will know how it feels and sounds when it happens,I had to do that with my nephew trucks ,car he is punch the pedal type.
If you can't find anything wrong, there's nothing wrong 👍
The need to manually clear codes because they may not self-clear after a repair is the reason I bought a $150 code reader with that capability. One potentially expensive engine repair with a 'stored' code but no 'money' lite, has not returned, apparently 'fixing' itself. Over the life of the vehicle a reader is a cheap, necessary investment of a few $$ a year for DIY mechanics .
At least you got yourself a strawberry shake out of it 😂😂😂
I switched out rear brake pads on my rouge but now every morning when i leave i hear a howling sound when i reverse out for about 5 secs then the noise goes away going fowarward or reverse nosise is gone. But if i leave car sitting for 10 hours the same noise comes back like in the mornin. Anyone have any ideas wat it could be
Best part, going for a RIP and getting some fresh cream
You deserve an ice cream and so does Mrs. O . Great job!
4:30 am and I love to start the day with a video from SMA!!
Was that a Shake brain freeze I saw at the end of the video? The one eye struggling to stay open…
The last NEW car we purchased is our 2000 Honda Oddessy. We had five kids and a minivan was our best option. After some disappointing experiences with two Chrysler vans, a 1989 grand caravan and then a 1994 grand voyager. Needless to say either was 'grand'. However, this Subaru story rreminded me of my wife complaining of the Oddessy intermittent transmission 'oops' starting at about 30,000 miles. Since we had such terrible experiences with the Chrysler products, I felt that she was a little too sensitive to the Honda's drivetrain. She would tell me that she felt the trans slip and I should drive it for a while. I never could duplicate what she was describing. She took it back to the dealer where we bought it at least twice and they also could not duplicate the problem. One day as I was cresting a small hill, I felt the car slip, just as it was about to upshift. We took it back to the dealer directly and were not only able to duplicate the issue with the mechanic but the van threw a transmission code. Although we were 11,000 miles past our warranty, the dealer felt that we had a persistent, but intermittent problem and agreed to underwrite the repair at no charge. We still have the Oddessy with well over 300,000 miles on it, with the original engine. We did have to have the trans overhauled at 270,000 miles. I figure its good for another 100,000, and I intend to get all of it.
My 2005 thru 2009 Subarus would error out if non OEM wheel bearings (speed sensor) were used.
subarus are junk tin cans. The engineering is horrible too. Any one DTC will turn on a million lights and diable cruise control! What r e tard thought that was smart? Plus they rust out so damn fast. Made of foil
Comment for IDK..
makes me wonder how in this vid. the rear bearings are spoke of. but in 1st vid they werent. was it months between video was it years. the issue with this car is ground . to many codes. in diff areas.
I once had a ABS light on for over a month after it being intermittant for weeks and weeks. The day I was to take it into the shop, the damned light was off. They couldn't fix it because it wasn't broken at the time. I fixed it myself by unplugging the ABS computer and hooking it back up. It never came on again. The pins just needed reseating.
👍
You really need to stress to the owner this car needs rear bearings. I love wheel bearing videos. I dont know why????
I ran into this once with a Chrysler town and country. I had speed sensor working but also throwing the light. It was rust dust sticking to the sensor from a bad bearing that magnetically stuck to the tip of the sensor .
Eric, you went to the ice cream stand without your bride…..shame on you
Faulty ABS/VDC computer module?
Why didn't Mrs. O get A milk shake ?
Hi what kind of obd scanner are you using, I need to purchase one, I would like suggestions please?
Hey Eric, whatever will be, will be!!!! At least you might some rear wheel bearings and brake job? Hopefully.
Ice cream run. I'd call this one a success!
Something interesting needs to happen… Like another Pinion Bearing! 🤣
You'll probably get it back on a tow truck with some front end damage and a half torn out bearing, when the husband gives up on that Subi bearing change….
Intermittent problems are the worst. Hopefully the customer respects your professional decision to not throw parts at it. Sometimes you just have to wait until the failing part finally dies. Thanks for the video.
100 years later and we're still driving hay wagons with huge motors to move 1 person
I changed the headlight bulbs on my 08 Accord. When I took it for a test drive, I had Xmas lights all over the dash: CEL, VSA, ABS, codes for yaw rate sensor, no speed signal from left ft wheel, and a MAF code. Reinspection revealed I forgot to plug the MAF sensor back in after moving it to get at the headlight buckets. Who knew?!
Strawberry shake…hell yeah!
lets see, what do the complainers say? Why didn't you take it home for a few days? Drive it to Jersey? Have Mrs O on the hood with a stethescope?
16 subaru crosstrek i have did both rear wheel bearings rotors and brakes and the passenger side emergency brake was rusted/fused to the rotor… what a fun junk time that was
❤ Not tic tok!!!!!
Took a Ford to a Ford dealer for a check engine light. Service mgr said 15 codes came up, where do you want me to start. At those prices I said spend an hour on it. After an hour he said it needs a new computer at $1200. No thanks. Drove it for awhile with the money light on. The battery died and when the new battery was installed the money light went out and never came back on. Why couldn’t they figure that out?
Have you ever considered that the penetrating oil purists that you do such a fine job of trolling… may be trolling you back IRL?
I love your quote “if I can do it, you can an do it” I always say “if someone else was able to do it so can you”. Sometimes it may take a while to figure out how but it’s possible. With a little bit of knowledge or no knowledge at all and a little bit of research you can figure out the problems. You will make mistakes but it’s part of the learning process. Pay attention of what you did wrong so you know next time and it’s ok to ask others for help or their expertise. Thanks for your channel and all your content including your mistakes you learn from. It’s all part of the business.
i would venture to say that either the abs sensor isnt seated all the way or the tone ring on the cv axle is lower on one side and out of round. or a bit of movement from a wheel bearing letting it move out of the sensor range.
Lawn mower man is my favorite character on the SMA show 🤣
If it's not broken, don't fix it
It is what it is with customer some times.
Funny thing just happened. I was watching the beginning of this video the reclined my chair. Then I heard Diagnose Dan's theme song. That would have been hallarious if you took his song for an intro.
Will there be a video on the yellow zo6?
What makes you an exceptional tech – you're honest and you're good. You definitely are a superior tech at diagnosis. You know your diagnostic tools and know how to use them.
Eric Which Autel scanner you using,
Is Subaru one of those manufacturer's that will set wheel sensor and abs codes if you have a wheel spin in the air with the key on? if so, that could have been the issue here when the owner replaced the drivetrain parts himself.
Something just makes me happy when I see a Subaru in the Official SMA SubaruBay(tm)! 👍
Was also nice of them folks to put the ice cream stand in the lot where you turn around during your test drives so you can stop for refreshments…it stands as a beacon for Avoca's community spirit!
“I can’t spend all day at the ice cream shop waiting on this intermittent problem.”
LIES!! 😂
No rear bearing or brake, why even have you look at it,
Hey mr. O kinds funny since I been watching you we have got grayer through the years. Nothing but love and support from Pittsburgh. And where can I score one of them gulf hats?
Ice creams always good.
I'm pretty sure many of the shops that have worked on my cars in the past use the "if it ain't broke… we'll work on it until it is" approach.
I never stop learning from watching your videos Erik
Twin Kiss visit, always a essential part of every diagnosis.🍦
Quick question I have a 1994 dodge ram with a 2001 5.2 will the 94 computer work on the 2001 or do I need a 2001 computer
I hope Mrs. O gets hooked up with the ice cream test drive once in a while 😉.
Lol on the napkin..
If it ain't broke you're just not trying hard enough – now hold my beer and watch this …
I've had subarus for years. One of my adult son has had them too and he summed it up nicely. He said "I don't know about getting another one, they aren't any more reliable than American cars." they are great in the snow but we don't get the snow we used to get. I have two but I'm not sure I'll buy more when these go to the junk yard. Maybe it if starts snowing a lot in the winter again. And probably no more than one at a time.
SMA, Twin Kiss Ice Cream, and a reasonable cost of living. Avoca is looking better by the day! 🤣
👍
Must be the loose nut behind the wheel 😂
Big show of neglect by Isaac Newton not have investigated the very special gravity force fields of ice cream shops. It's a mystery!
always a chance for a bearing and brake job….
Nice.
No rear brake job? Oh Well 😁
I think you are right. After the customer did the repairs, the codes were never cleared. I think you fixed the customer concerns… Nicely done… You are the man… =)
No fat, no suger, no fun. Great video Eric O. get the Ice Cream Machine.
Those bearings sound like a prop plane flying over. Holy crap!
im going to call foul here…. i was told when one gets something to eat and or drink "you have to share with the rest of us"…. sooooo were is my strawberry shake??? HMMMM!!!! J.K…… oh yea your right when you cant dup. the customer concern then there is nothing more you can do.
At my shop people will throw parts at their car then take it to us and say the money light is still on. After going through the diagnostic procedures I find nothing wrong and then have the service manager call them just to ask if the cleared the DTC’s… and they say no… 🤬😭😭😭
Good Job Eric O, keep up the good work, Love the utubes…
You did what you could do. Home mechanics can throw a wrench into the machine for you. Enjoy a strawberry shake for me Eric. My doc says I'm doing too good on my blood sugar to go messing it up now. Be well.
The customer has a problem with the flashing light on the dashboard, but not the worn rear brake pads & wheel bearings! I guess it was more annoying having a light flash constantly – you can always stop by hitting something in front of you if the brakes don't work!
Drive shaft was replaced but no concerns about the brake situation
Sick!!!
My ‘13 Impreza would throw all of the lights on the dash. It would do this intermittently for years and, not to mention, would let out an ear piercing screech out of the cars speakers for about a half second every now and again. I read on a forum somewhere after owning the car for 4 years that the brake pedal switch was faulty from the factory. I replaced it and it fixed all of those weird problems. Subaru eventually issued a recall on this part around 2021. You may want to have your customer check to see if there are any recalls on their car before they dump more money into it trying to figure this out just in case this is the problem.
In the L.A. City Fleet I worked at, I could let it go till the problem became more constant or keep it till the problem showed itself.
You've got the right idea Mr. O.
I wonder how many cars (Subarus specifically?) are having shady fault codes due to remote hacking efforts to deliberately cost / harass them both financially and psychologically? Is there anyone studying this possibility, considering how easy it is for hackers to remotely access a Subaru's computer through its wireless remote?
I know that my car's electronics were hacked. I just can't say whether it was due to the wireless remote or my cellular phone being connected to the cigarette lighter, which did it. I suspect the phone, considering how badly acting it's been, but this needs to be researched.
🤷♂️
is there a discount coupon for the milk shake 😅
What's up with the lawnmower man?
More importantly, what over-stimulated ADHD activity is he involved in during the long, Avoca winter?
Does he go down south to cut lawns?
Always time for a ice cream break!😂
Chasing ghosts when the customer don't tell you the whole story another good video Mr.O
Maby getting you to check his work and advising other work that needs to be done plus a clearing of codes.
Strawberry shakes are good yea
this video proves I might be a mechanic after all. I frequently can't find what is causing my cars problems , so I don't fix it also. 🙂 LOL
Eric O'…I hope you got a Shake for Mrs. O!!! Or your ass is grass!
guy was still mowing at the end of the video…🙂
Hey, you did good and didn't rip your customer off. Too many mechanics nowadays try to justify ripping their customers off. So its nice to see an honest one.
