Previously on. Rain Man Raise repairs. We are removing exhaust manifolds in order to replace broken bolts and seal a large exhaust leak. The operation didn't go as planned and a bolt broke off in the cylinder head.

Hello everybody! Good day to you! Welcome back! We return to our Chevrolet Silverado 1500 that had the exhaust leaks. We're going back in to the stud that killed me at the Finish Line look at that broken set right there. I had an easy out extractor on it. It was coming out.

It started to turn and then it broke off recessed into the cylinder head. I'm I'm still upset over what happened, but I'm not going to be discouraged I'm going to get this thing out of here. I'm going to fix this truck I'm not pulling the cylinder head off, hence the welder. What I need to do here unfortunately I have an aluminum head I need to get some bead built up on that weld right there.

We're gonna get around that bolt there. We're gonna get some weld on it. I'm gonna put another over it. We're going to weld that nut on and I'm taking that thing out of there.

It's going to come out and it's going to come out flawlessly just like how I said. So stay tuned because this better be a good video. I'm not in the mood for defeat openings you Hood Interesting. It's just loaded with it.

It's a circular cheetah all right ground cables on from the welder. Let's get the safety Squints engaged here and I need to start to uh to build up this. uh this stud right here. see how this is gonna work out? Begin welding now it's too hot.

Good thing the aluminum is not going to weld. Yeah. Build It Up more down there. Oh, come on working I hope it's working because if it doesn't work, I'm in trouble and nothing I don't feel like being in a little more.

Blew it off Build It Up Nice. A little bit more wire speed just to smidge. All right. Angry electricity.

Is that working? No yeah, the nut seems to be kind of stable. Yeah, all right, that's pretty much buzzed on. As good as I think I can get it from from attempt number one. Uh, hopefully there's only going to be one attempt.

however I don't think that I got the penetration on the stud that I need and this is just going to spin right off. That's what I think this is going to do here. Let's try it some. I'll just kind of work it.

Maybe it'll break the threads free to come out. It's either going to break the weld off or it's going to break the threads out turning. of course that uh that Subaru block that I ruined did the same thing, turned some and then snapped off and I found out I was just twisting the weld and we're breaking. Here we go.

Okay, let's clean it up. try again. There we go. This is it's built up some a little more I want more on it? Stop it.

Okay, okay. another nut coming in. Let's go about there holding as flush as I can. Let's get down in there real deep black.

Seriously, the deal. Look at that. Hmm I wasn't happy. No worries trying again.
It's getting hot in here too. Very warm rocket surgery. Forgive my absence of commentary. Stress levels a little elevated.

right through here, just a little bit. The wire keeps getting stuck in the tip of the welder and I have to pull it out and then cut it off. It's quite annoying. Get out there.

you don't have unlimited chances to do this. So yeah. come on. turn up the wire speed there.

Yeah. burn it in here. we go. Nuclear settings: Nuclear.

it's pronounced nuclear More Steam Come on. more wire speed. All of it. I don't care as long as this stupid bolt comes out foreign.

Okay, all right I need to let that cool off and I'll I'll try to get it again. All right. Nobody. Say a word.

Don't comment. Don't do anything. Nobody moved. We're gonna get this thing to come out.

Just don't let it know I don't think it's paying attention. Come on. come on you do. It's either coming out or we're breaking off.

Yep, we're breaking it off. Yep, there it goes. Okay I have three more of these nuts left and I think at this rate I actually might be able to get this out with my remaining nuts. Let's get it again.

Build up on there. Oh, that's a good one Again, Hear me again. Yeah, that was deep black. Okay, let's get our nut in position here.

Hope I Got some dirt on it I Don't want dirt on my nuts. Extended welded crap out of it? Come on. Okay, that one had real good penetration. Let's let it cool again and uh, see if we can't walk that thing to come out.

Gotta just just keep working it. I'm pretty sure the stud's turning. that's on there. All right.

We got another one welded onto it I Think that's number four or five. I'm gonna throw some lube in there, cool it off, and it'll also hopefully Wick down into those threads a little bit more. At the very least, it's going to cool it off, smoke it all right. Another, oh look at that.

it turned okay. You come out this time or do I have to get upset and go home. turning it more felt like some crunchy action going on. Get more Lube in it.

So yeah, on that last little turn, it felt kind of crackly. the best. I know how to describe it? It's moving. It might be the bits of aluminum kind of breaking away.

that sort of melted over the front of the stud there. I Don't know if it's coming out or not. Am I breaking it or is it coming loose? What's going on here? It's probably breaking. I Think it's breaking.

We're gonna use reverse psychology on this. It's breaking. That's what's happening. It's not coming out.

Nope. Not gonna come out. This isn't working. You need to replace the engine.

Need a cylinder head? This isn't going to come out. Nope. Not at all. Not even close.

Wasting my time 100 percent. Yep. I'm losing. losing the battle.

Did it work? Did my uh, did my reverse psychology work? Look the nuts. getting farther away from the head. It's working. Get out of here.
Oh oh, the Heat's traveling up the range too. It's getting hot where my hand is. This is totally coming out. Yes, this is a I'm having a victory dance in my head right now.

Does anybody else having a victory dance? Are you cheering out loud comment down below like come on guys, let's uh. let's get the uh. the energy up here. This is great.

This changes everything. Whoo buddy! Yeah, look at those threads. Look at those threads. I Can see them all right.

The wrench is hot though. but I see threads. Got it? You guys? We got it. It's out.

It's coming out. It's gonna work. Yeah, let me get a hold of that so it doesn't fall and burn because it's still pretty super hot here it comes. Look at that, We got her.

We got it good and the threads are still there too. Awesome! Yes, All right fellas. I'm thrilled this is a win. This is a 100 percent win with just a minor setback that is fantastic.

And not in, uh, not a moment too soon because uh, it's uh, it's two hours after hours. It's late in the day I Couldn't walk away from this being what it was. so we're all done here. I'm gonna go ahead and pack it up.

we're gonna get out of here and uh, hopefully I'll have my parts in the morning and then we can get back into into action and get this thing reassembled and back out on the road. So all that being said, I'm gonna go ahead and close this video up right now. I Will do that as always by thanking each and every one of you guys for watching this video As always I Hope you enjoyed this video. If you did enjoy this video, please feel free one more time to let me know what you think in the comment section down below.

Don't forget to tap that like button while you're down there. and most importantly, have yourselves a great day! See you guys later! See you tomorrow! See you on the reassembly video of our Chevrolet Silverado I'm packing it up going home I'm tired at the end of the program today. End of transmission into video End of work day. See you guys later.

Welder powering down.

It always helps to use a fender washer and larger nut like 3/4 .alot of blaster let it completely cool sometimes because its counter sunk take a ball rotary file remove some aluminum around stud because its trapped and you need to relieve it.

Ah man! I feel your pain bro! I did this job on my 08 Sierra in my driveway, same exact bolts broke off as in this video and they were all recessed in the head 🥲. I went the same route with the welder. after welding 3 nuts on the stud and having them twist off…I cranked the welder to the max (it was a cheap hobert welder nothing fancy) and just put a super thick bead of weld on it and grabbed the bead with vice grips. long story short, I was able to get them all out. there was no greater feeling of victory than when I finished that job 😂. Good work man, love the channel

I have better luck not letting it cool off. Nuke it with a lot of amperage then put your wrench on it and back it out while is still red hot. Steel bolts basically lube themselves when they’re red hot.

Not to tell you what to do, but if you clean in-between welds it may prove helpful… I mean if you happen to have any BrakeKleen… Just layin around… It might just help to spray a lil before welding and after it dries or 🔥💥 may be un-beautimus

Good job Ray! But I must say, sitting here in Indiana watching you unscrew almost all the exhaust bolts left me shaking my head. An older truck here in the rust belt would have left you with 6 broken Y-pipe bolts and almost all manifold bolts also broken. The rust on vehicles you work on from the 90’s is about the same as the rust on a 2 year old vehicle here. I have turned wrenches all my life, (I’m 70), and it amazes me the ease of removing parts in your area. I also get a kick out of you reading the mileage of the vehicles you work on. I am amazed at the great condition of those high mileage vehicles. Here where I live in northern Indiana, a vehicle with 140,000 miles is ready for the scrap yard because the frame is rusted in two or the body has rusted off the frame. Thank you for your great videos and narrations. I have caught myself saying things like flashlight gravity and Click. Keep up the great work!

All this headache could be avoided if the manufacturer put $0.01 worth of anti-seize on these exhaust manifold bolts. Sigh.

  83. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Coffman says:

NOT A MECHANIC HERE, but when you are initially putting a bead on the broken bolt what keeps it from welding the broken bolt to the engine??

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Legio LXIX says:

I am guessing that MIG welder is gasless. People generally rip those shrouds off and just duct tape the sensitives. Gives you a better view and gets into tighter spaces.

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars michael brinks says:

Tips For Using Weld Method: Make sure your nut is clean including the threads inside. The weld won't bond if the threads are greasy/dirty. After you weld the nut on, spray penatration oil on it which also helps it cool. Let it cool off before before turning.
The welding heated up the stud & expanding it tighter inside the aluminum block.

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars A R Musc says:

Steel bolts into aluminum heads, gotta luv automotive engineers. This same problem on a starter bolt broken is why I bought a cheap wire welder. Suck at dropping beads but can plug weld like mofo. Lol

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars goldCrystalhaze says:

I was sure you were going to take it out. On similar occasions, I used to apply heat with a torch first (as long as it was safe to do so). Then I would try the e-z out or strong pliers, provided that I would soak it with penetrating oil. It worked on me 90%. If it failed, I would go to plan b, welding a nut on it.

  97. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bryan Kirk says:

I think you need more spray and a welding course. Good one tho'.

  98. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don & Tammy Sherrill says:

Holy crap, how'd you get the weld to stick to the bolt and not damage the aluminum? I laughed to myself when you suggested attempting that weld, I'm inspired!
