Makes me wonder if you could shave a tad off the sides of a drill bit for the first run and maybe it wouldn’t cut off the first few threads but still drill the center. It would still have to be snug against the walls somehow though.
They should just make a special tool for it maybe with smooth sides with shape tip or maybe just slip a sleeve and smaller drill bit to get the hole dimple started.
Those flank bite seem pretty similar to those “metrinch” tools that come out late 90’s. Perhaps that patent has run out?
I use a set of self-centering hinge drills to create the initial pilot into a recessed broken bolt. I only replaced the chinesium drill bits with carbide ones, since the bolts that break off are often harder than drill bits intended for wood. Once I get the carbide/self-centering bit chewing in a little, I can stop and go for a regular bit to finish the bore. Only three sizes cover every broken bolt I have made, and I keep spare carbide bits on hand because I keep dropping things.

so only the first few threads are the problem remove those and all is well
too bad the tool cant keep the too small stud from breaking…

Those look a lot like Metwrinchs. They have been around for years. They work on standard or metric. I'm just a backyard wrencher but I loved my set. Lost them in a move.

I haven't owned a "new " tool for years I let the boxes or tools themselves get a bit dirty b4 bring them into the garage just to avoid the new tool discussion !
Skips in a socket or wrench set absolutely sucks especially for extractors just wish everything came with a full set or atleast 3 or for 10mms 😂
I came across a 'hinge drill bit set' to help with that annoying task of centering the hole when drilling out a recessed broken bolt. Really cheap, widely available, designed for centering holes when drilling wood screw holes for doors hinges. There's a spring loaded retractable protective flange on each bit that won't chew the sidewall threads, and the flange centers the bit automatically. You can use the hinge bit to start the hole, then switch to your standard drill for the remainder. I'm guessing the idea is so old that nobody can copyright it, meaning there isn't much interest by toolmakers to market it for the steelworking industry. Worth a try!
It's been 3 years now, would you still recommend these? Capri has a set our now that seems similar to the astro set and a lot of people are talking about them but seeing these makes me think that astro pneumatic had them out first

Such crappy metal alloys in those studs. I'd definitely complain to the manufacturer, this is an engineering defect if I ever saw one. Save 10ths of a cents on a bolt, and this is what you get, total doo doo crap 😓

Interesting that you drill to get the center marked. I use a set of machinists transfer punches. I also have an ancient set of Snap-On left hand drill bits. I use them with the drill in reverse and half the time they'll grab when they're drilling and spin the broken stud right out, no e-z out required.

Have you seen the set that has a sleeve that fits into the bolt hole and provides a guide to drill the center of the bolt? It’s designed to not damage any of the threads. It has a round easy out with 6 sharp splines on it to bite into the bolt after you drill out the Center. I’ll try to find the name and let you know.
Just wondering if you have ever used a reverse fluted twist drill to drill the broken studs/bolts ? I have spent a good bit of cash having as complete sets in SAE, Metric, Numbered, and lettered sizes with the reverse flite as just the action of drilling will very often back the offending fastener out. Just saying. It works for me probably 30 or 40% of the time.
I got a cheap set well “45 dollar” at autozone and they’re basically the same design and they’ve never let me down only downfall was that they’re 3/8 drive but love them they always worked for me

Watching this, I'm glad I got into IT instead. I've used lots of tools that bite.
A poor man's ( or woman's ) home made tool is get a socket that just fits the rusted bolt. Corsely grind the top of the socket so plenty of " dross is left inside the socket. Heat the bolt with a propane torch then spray with wd 40 to cool the rusted bolt. Repeat, then drive on the socket using a small hammer. Shpuld unscrew. Rrpeat as necessary. I use this technique on cars that are driven in Pacifica CA that drive through salt air. Customers ask how come I don't break the bolts like the " other guys " just gotta have a little time and finesse.
To center the hole without drilling out the first few threads, try using a hinge drill bit set.

Ford EM’s my only positive experiences involved that torch and making them glow red prior to trying to turn them out. Even then only about 80 percent success rate. Exhaust work sucks.
