    I like my HF tie rod popper. Just put a bit of tension on it and give the business end a little tappy-tap-tap. No need to go gonzo on the tension that way.
    Any cotter that comes out without a drill is a good cotter pin. It hurts my soul to find a bent nail where s cotter pin should be. (not uncommon on farm serviced equipment around here). If there is a nail in place of a cotter, beware what lurks behind it….

    Ray, I know the tie rod/ball joint separator can be scary as it holds a lot of potential energy. Have you ever tried screwing the bolt down so there's plenty of strain on the joint then tapping with a ball peen hammer? It's a lot less dramatic release of energy, and does end the problem of tools turning into missiles. Just a thought anyway…

    This is probably buried. Matco does have a 3/8 or1/2 adapter for the liner impact driver. You fit a socket on the end and use the nut as the impacting aria. Uses all of the thread engagement as load bearing. I can get you the 3/8 part number. Fantastic tool. Great for ball joints/ tie rod ends.

    Ray just want to get it out of the way i love your vids. But the bushings need to be tightened while in their “on ground” resting position either from jacking up the hub or putting the vehicle on the ground. Its gonna tear the bushings if you continue to do it like this.

    @Rainman Ray's Repairs It's interesting how, even given the sheer variety of plier-like tools out there, you learn very quickly (or inevitably) that diagonal cutters are the most efficient tool to remove cotter pins. They grip the pin well and are angled in such ways as you can walk the pin and get advancing bites. If all else fails, you can cut it without having to go to the drawer for a different set. AND they are the most likely to be in the drawer to begin with, as all the needle-nose pliers and vise grips are probably in use/missing. 😀

    Be careful when hammering drive shaft head as outer joint may go too far in and it is difficult to backup it if lock ring goes fully through the hole.

    I have a ball joint separation tool like that. I lube the bolt and crank up the pressure then a sharp hammer blow on the top lever easily pops out the taper. I’ve done it with tightening force alone but that puts me too close to the bang when it does let go.
