In this video we have a look at a 2014 Buick Verano 2.4L Eng that has codes for the exhaust camshaft actuator. P0013 and P0014. One of these is a "circuit" code and the other is a "performance" code. I hope to show you that it makes more sense to track down the failing circiut that will ultimately cause the component to have poor performance. -Enjoy!

This problem is an early sign of timing chain / guide failure. These 2.4 engines are notoriously bad when it comes to stretched chains and broken guides

where is the PCV valve located on the Verano 2.0 turbo engine?

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rumen Hristov says:

Same vehicle. P0014 only. Confirmed wiring is ok. Confirmed both solenoids at ~14ohms. Cam and crank sensors work – at least they read same rpm. P0014 gets set after every deive cycle. I'm at a loss. I know my solenoid is good as it reads exact same as the intake solenoid. Yet I still throw the same code. Actuator gets commanded to 5-10-15-20 degrees, desired cam position changes, but the actual stays at 0….

How can I clear the code after doing this without a scanner

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Hervert says:

Excellent video, short, informative and to the point. Thank you!

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Saldutti66 says:

Hi, so I changed both intake and exhaust selonoid as well as the camshaft timing sensor and I am still getting the p0014 code. Any ideas as to what I should look at next? Thank you

I need some help/advice. I have the same car, throwing only the P0014 code. I swapped my exhaust selenoid and my check engine light is still on. The car doesn't run rough or anything and my scanner says it's a permanent code. I have to drive 30-45min after clearing the code before the check engine light comes back on still throwing the same code. I'm trying to find anyone with any sort of advice as my shop wants to charge me $118 just to look at it, that's not even to repair it. I don't have that kind of cash and the issue seemed pretty straightforward.

Hi all , I have a 2018 Vauxhall insignia 1.5 petrol turbo , and last month my car went into limp home mode and EML light came on , scanned it with my basic scan tool and came up with codes p0011 and p0014 , took back to main dealer and they replaced both intake and exhaust camshaft vvt Solenoids , as they had both failed , no charge as car is still under warranty.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Justin Trout says:

There's a tsb out from gm to replace both actuator solenoid valves if one fails…just a heads up. Keep up the awesome videos!

If it was a 14 and less than 100k that dude was warranty

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom D says:

I’m aware of at least one TSB and one safety recall on Toyota/Lexus VVT actuator components. That’s my point, if there is an issue of the type, generally Toyota covers it. I’m sure they are not perfect but I think Toyota is one of the better ones when it comes to warranty or technical issues. Including avoiding them in the first place.

Gotta love modern vehicles – just 1 year out of warranty, and we've got a solenoid failure. 🤯

Great vid – I'll remember this one for when one of these turds rolls in years (or maybe sooner!) down the road …👍

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael O says:

Eric I didn't see an "End Session" button on your Diagun? Both my Launch 's have a 'button' to get out of the Diagnostic & back to the main menu. It's great the function I like most out of all the tools. Unlike Obdstar & Autel crap, back back back back my fingers are getting tennis elbow! 😂

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DnV Auto Performance & Welding says:

Awesome content, those buicks have the problems with the timing chain guides, had exact same problem, the exhaust solenoid failed, same code. About 6 months after i did solenoid customer comes back with another camshaft code, dont remember if it was exact same but i think it was and i found solenoid to be good, but timing chain guides have plastic attached that had broken and failed. now this is the third different buick to do this to me, so when i see it i take the extra 15 min and lift VC enough to get my scope in and inspect, from what ive seen is the plastic falls off the top center chain guide, and the chain wears the metal thats left and causes solenoid to fail. bottom line you will be seeing that car again soon for timing component replacement fairly soon

That verano must of had alot of milage on it. My uncle had a 2013 and no issues at all. I'm glad he got rid of it. I thought it was ugly.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MrSEANCARPENTER1 says:

2.4l engine is crap, my 2013 Malibu Eco needed a new engine , bought the car used with 64,000 miles. Had timing chain failure at 125,000 miles. You never know how previous owners maintained their cars, always check oil levels for these engines.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pursuit of Happiness says:

Just did this on my father’s GM. What’s your opinion of changing them both when one fails? Worth it or no since they are so easy to change out?

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeremy Anthony says:

    Way to go Dr o.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars HyperXprojects says:

I have a 2012 GS and the same actuator failed in mine. (dealer replaced under warranty – I mentioned that in a video I did on my channel) Would you happen to know if there is a TSB on them? Should I expect to have the replacement go in the future? In other words are they junk or just the roll of the dice? Thank you!

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars spelunkerd says:

The way you verify the diagnosis first, then confidently swap in the new part, is gold. Sweet scan tool! People who don't have a bidirectional scanner can still do this with live data, watching the engine call for a specific angle and checking that the desired angle was achieved.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars W M says:

Awesome quick and easy testing vid! Question, where did you get those test leads for sliding onto the male pins of the sensor?

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Traveler X says:

While I won't own a GM vehicle due to poor quality, their systems are easy to understand and repairs are not that difficult.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank Gonzalez says:

My 07 Cobalt LE5 has those. Resistance for the solenoids should be between 7 and 15 ohms. And the solenoids are cam specific. You can't swap them because the connection shapes are different between the two.

One thing I like to do is check the screen on the bottom, there's been a time or two that I've seen a build up. Sure those are high fail parts that the dealer stock piles, but I'm starting to see more and more of lack of oil changes causing issues like this. I've even been known to recommend an oil change after such repair.
