All right folks, here's the Junkyard engine. This is customer Supply They have no idea if it's any good, if there's how many miles around it or if it's even the right engine so no idea there. this is where we left off. that's all the junk.

I Peeled off the junkyard one. of course. you know when they take them out of the wrecking yard they you know, cut the harness and cut the hoses and all that stuff. Um, so you have to take it off.

Uh, plus even if they didn't cut it I wouldn't uh I wouldn't use it because I want to make sure that you know the ECM pin configuration. everything is you know for this car. So I just got it back basically to a you know, to a long block essentially left the injectors in a high pressure fuel pump you know, coils, exhaust manifold, water pump. so hopefully it is the correct one.

I've read the comments before. you know some of you folks own shops or work at Shops and get super pumped. If a customer you know supplies their own parts which I don't care about most of the time my labor rate is higher if you bring your parts. Um, and of course there's no warranty.

Of course there's a warranty on my workmanship, but there's not a warranty on the part you know I don't care if this motor is bad or not I get paid either way and then I'll get paid to do it twice. So it's kind of a win-win Oh I sound like a jerk I Mean it's not a win-win it's a win-win for me. I guess I Guess the fact of the matter is like I can't lose I don't have to eat anything just cutting some of my zip ties off here I had this stuff out of the way. Um, of course you know I'm very transparent with my customer too and let them know yes, you can bring me an engine if it's no good.

that's your problem baby. You know? In which case, you know this guy you know agreed with I'm not going to do a hack job or a crappy job just because he brought me his own part I don't I just wants his car fixed. So anyways, typically if I sell a used engine I have several buyers that I buy into this from and they're always buying them with the warranty. so a parts and label warranty if the customer doesn't want to pay the extra 400 bucks for the you know, one year unlimited mileage parts and labor warranty I won't sell the engine because I'm certainly not gonna, you know, eat it myself I mean it's a used engine, so that's the only way I sell them if they don't want to buy the warranty.

Well, you can go buy your own engine, bring it to me and still have no warranty, but then it's just. you know, it's off my conscience. It's not my problem, so that's that's how I do use engines I may have even mentioned it I don't even know what was wrong with this one. he I wasn't asked to diagnose it.

Uh, he had another shop. they diagnosed it but couldn't replace it. It did excuse me allergic to work at least that's what I was told. So here we are.

baby there we go. So I'm just gonna work on getting the wiring harness off and getting stuff swapped over. It's kind of just the monotonous, tedious part of the whole job. Gotta swap the intake and all that garbage.
And just to forewarn you, I'm probably going to fast forward through some of this show you the process, but not every single clip. Every single fastener tedious enough. You guys don't want to sit through an hour or so of that. I'll tell you that much.

All right. Free tip for you though. Um, this is a big harness I don't know how naturally it's going to light so leave yourself some Clues particularly on spots where it doesn't seem as obvious like I had to sneak this out of behind the water pump. So I just leave myself a little note behind the water pump and then that way there it'll you get this in place, some of the rest of it kind of Falls in place and it will kind of all fall together.

All right. Foreign? Thank you Foreign Foreign thank you Okay, foreign, foreign foreign Thank you. Josh Yeah, we gave me a 13 wrench. Foreign I Think that's about it folks.

uh. oil level Center down here. Point that in that clip there no sense of putting intake on I Had to take the old intake uh, right here off the junkyard motor I Couldn't remember if this ran above or below that hope. but I knew it clipped in the intake I just couldn't remember where.

uh, this is the injectors. We'll leave that unhooked because we still need to have the intake off. I Think we need the intake off. take starter off, take the bell housing out, or take the four converter bolts out.

rather. so we're gonna leave that off. So we've got some extra wires down here. We've got to tighten up our grounds.

That's for a starter starter. that's for something else. I Don't want something in the intake? probably map sensor I would imagine. And then this was all the craft that came off that we had zip tied up to the front.

Uh, this must go on the intake too, right? We got what we got. Throttle body. yes, we got throttle body. then yep, then a map sensor here.

So like I say this is the old old intake. Um I think everything else is plugged in everything else but on the home. So let me tighten up these ground wires. let me put our uh hose back on here before I forget uh, make sure the clamps are all good I Want to tighten up all my grounds and then we'll proceed from there.

All right. Foreign got things I Want to do cat hair and they're snuggling my kitty? Um, that baby's pretty much swapped over I think I'm gonna run down to the harbor freight and grab us one of those thousand pound lifting tables it should be. you know, high enough capacity to pick this thing up and down. And I think I'm going to do that simply because it would have been nice when we're lifting it off if we could have unbolted it and scooch it.

Forward just a little bit because we had lots of room in front, but it was really tight to the back on those brake lines. and where that you know they got that piece of carpet over the back of the engine there. Uh, I mean so far it's pretty easy. pretty easy swap setup, you know, overly difficult one.
just time consuming. So I ran out of time today at too many other things going on. I got a lot going on tomorrow so I don't know one of the uh when we'll be back on. hopefully hopefully sometime tomorrow.

but just doing little chunks here put them out like this. hope you guys like it and don't get too frustrated that they're all little small parts of the same car. So anyways, catch you on the next one. Foreign.

I'm dizzy from all the jiggly bits going back on the engine. Push pin and xmas tree harness holder things always break for me. Eric is magic.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DAD TYPE 2 says:

I thought I heard you say it seized or failure at cylinder 1, but as to why the failure, that was never determined. I will say I watched a video a few weeks back on this same caddy and engine and it had a catastrophic failure too but it started as a compression leak or failure, zero compression I forgot if it was intake or exhaust, but anyway testing was down engine was ran off and on and it seized. Turned out one of the valves on cylinder 1 chipped off like imagine the face of a clock and a piece is missing between the 2 and 4 place. And it wasn't found in the bore, so it probably cracked miss fired then came off was destroyed and seized the engine, who knows but that was the case for that one. And like I said I thought I heard Eric say this one seized at cylinder 1 but as to the exact cause we don't know as he wasn't asked to diagnose it. Anyway hope this helps but with all that goes on with an engine that may or may not be this one's problem. Maybe lack of oil services which we all know that will absolutely kill an engine. Take care all. And I'm sorry if I miss heard absolutely don't mean to put words in people's mouths.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eric Siebert says:

I have a 15 Cadillac SRX with a 3.6, brought it to a nationwide chain for a fuel system cleaning. As soon as they started it the engine started running very rough, they insisted everything was OK, it eventually died and from that point wouldnโ€™t start again (wouldnโ€™t even turn over). I ended up having to have it towed to a shop of my choosing. Turns out they hydrolocked the motor with a faulty machine that dumped everything in at once so the motor needed to be replaced, I had about 135k on it. They were covering the cost but wanted to replace it with a like mileage motor. I made a big stink because I felt they should do better than that because of what they put me thru and I have no idea how that motor was maintained. Ended up emailing their CEO whose office reached out to me and they said they would do better than that. The shop I brought it to found a used motor with only 9k on it so thats what I ended up getting. The swap went well and the motor has run great and will hopefully get me many more years of use. So this video hits close and I can appreciate all that goes into swapping an engine on a modern day vehicle. Thanks for sharing these experiences!

Rainman Ray led me here, and I've watched several, upon several videos. So if a customer shows up with a car and a used engine and says I had another shop, look at this, and they said I need a new engine. You're just gonna put in the used engine???? Seems a little different than your other videos in where you want to make sure the customer is taken care of even when they're wrong. A little disappointed to see this.of course I'm not a mechanic, but customers are customers and the pyramid runs both ways in my experience.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ralph Featherstone says:

Eric, this is an excellent video series. I'm sure there is bound to be a customer that balks at the time and money charged to swap an engine. This series is an excellent educational tool. Should be required viewing!

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Trey Cook says:

You remember that time some guy gave you a 25% coupon for Harbor Freight, but you said you didn't need anything from there? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

Of course, I'm just giving you some grief. I'll send another one this year or an Inside Track Club membership; whichever you'd like.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Brown says:

I don't buy used engines from individuals or junkyards unless, like the 302 Ford I recently purchased, I'm planning on a complete rebuild. They normally come with a 30 day warranty which gives me plenty of time to disassemble and inspect them. If it's a swap for a customer and they want it done yesterday, which this customer apparently didn't, I insist on a crate engine. If they say no, they can take it elsewhere.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alisa Beheler says:

Love your videos. Love your honesty. Just one little hint. You have women watching your videos tooโ€ฆ. Lol. I was a mechanic in the military.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Leif Jensen says:

The speed he moves in the fast forward parts are the speeds that you have to move to meet the manufacturer's warranty times.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rick Marshall says:

Wonder why the 2.5L went bad, which such low miles on it. I know everything breaks, but still. Wonder if something happened in the previous accident?

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dr Dr says:

I don't mind if they supply their own parts, I just charge them more in labour…

Ahh the old charge them full list for parts that the shop pays 30% of to the parts house. Actually scumbag move, charging more for the same labour, no warranty, so no risk if supplied part is wrong or bad, and actually involves less time, because no waiting for parts. Charge the same or don't accept customer supplied parts, otherwise you're just being a scumbag, imho. Forcing an option to make a part look cheaper is also shady as fuck, imho. The engine is $1200 but unless you pay $400 extra, I won't buy the engine to install, oh and if you supply an engine hourly rate goes up 50%(as an example)… But the customer would scoff at the engine if he was straight up and said it was $1,600 probably…

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Douglas Rudd says:

I would want a mechanic that would not do the job unless he was convinced it really needed it.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Wills Restorations says:

Never in my life will I ever understand why people go and purchase a junkyard motor, you spend all that money in labor having an engine removed and replaced and then you go and do a stupid thing like grab yourself a junkyard motor, for the price of a junkyard motor you probably could have had your motor rebuilt or fixed what was wrong with your motor and now you know what you have in your vehicle. In my experience junkyard motors hardly ever workout.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars LTVoyager says:

The owner of the Caddy obviously isnโ€™t too bright. They get a diagnosis from a shop that canโ€™t even do an engine swap and then bring it to Eric for an engine swap and donโ€™t even ask for a second opinion on the diagnosis. That is shear stupidity.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mod_inc llc says:

Number 1.) The customer is a jerk for not asking for a second opinion regarding original engine failure. U๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚nless Mr. O knows the other shop well enough to trust their diagnosis.
2.) Big jobs like this make the best content because it's so rare to see something like this on the interwebs. 3.) You are giving anyone who needs to do one of these in the future a huge solid not only as an overview of the details on the r&r of this block but also on flat rate price. I haven't finished the series yet but I do hope you give a wrap up at the end.
BTW a win-win means a win for both parties not a double win for one party! ๐Ÿคฃ

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jose Diaz says:

Would have liked to see you run the original to hear its fault. Also wouldnt you do a compression test or leakdown on the replacement. even if yout werent paid. i wouldnt want to do it twice even if paid
you are getting a google check so why not do it for content

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary J. Ranno says:

I have a question would it be easier to lower the engine and transmission attached to the lower subframe? Is that not how they install it at the factory?
It would just involve unbolting the top of the struts and not the front end components. The harness would all still stay with the engine. Just a thought.

Ho buys this modern crap? I used around 1 hour to get my Dodge Ram engine out.

  53. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 280813jb says:

Sure is a complicated job to swap an engine in a modern car. Last car that I helped swap an engine was a 1962 Ford Galaxy 500, took a 352 V8 put in a 390 V8, took my cousin and I two evenings and a tractor with front end loader.

there is no need to explain Eric about warranty and if the customer provides their own parts you have to bump up your labor rates just to stay profitable. If the shop isn't profitable then there is no use in being in business in the first place. Its not like you a mark up an engine like you can an ignition coil or a tie rod or some other basic part.

I think it's BS a shop won't use customer supply new parts.

Years ago in the winter I needed a ball joint changed, I called a local shop ask them how much they said 200 bucks. I said I have the ball joint brand-new in-the-box they said no we have to use our ball joint, I said what kind of ball joint is yours he said TRW I said that's what I have a brand new trw ball joint!
He couldn't Mark the part up on me is the issue!
Last month my mom's Chrysler needed a lower radiator it was 15ยฐ outside, I called the nearest shop they wanted 352 dollars to change the lower hose! I said how much is the hose! He said 182 dollars!
I paid $82 from the same hoes!
    Bunch of business criminals!!
The criminals can't mark up the part's you bring them!!!
I'm not knocking your shop cuz you will use a customer part that's really cool!!
Not everybody is wealthy they need their vehicle!
Why can't shops be fair and put the customer part on for them?
And tell them we cannot warranty it that's fine!
But a shop won't use a customer's new part especially OEM?
Because they can't mark it up that's crap!! I've been working on vehicle's on and off for over 28 years!
I know what shop's pay for parts!
Some of these business criminal shops already change way to much for labor!
I know this because they have four cars two houses and two boats!

I think with only 15k or so on it I would have just put a new long block in it if infact the original engine was bad the original engine is probably fine! Fyi the junkyard engine looks horrible!

Allergies – I got transferred from a Frigate to a Cruiser. Shortly thereafter I had this ropy stuff growing in my eyes. Eye doctors said it would most likely clear up on its own, something in the environment that I encountered. I mentioned the transfer and maybe it was the hazy gray paint of my new command? He actually thought about it for a second or two. Then looked at me with a slight grin and shook his head as he said no.

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jimmy, Making it work says:

Man we have been seeing so many engines and transmissions lately. Doing a 2.0T Escape right now and have an Equinox engine job waiting to go asap.

If only we could do them as fast as editor let's us do them, haha.

  82. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Indiana John says:

I had a dealer put in a used engine in my Audi A4, last only 40k before having a major issue. Now I am saving up to get a new engine.

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Moefuggerr says:

Cool vid. Motor looks like it might have been leaking.

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matt Brown says:

You are a true professional. You made that "Charlie Foxtrot" look manageable. I'd trust you with my cars any day. Be well and stay safe.

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 2eagle86 says:

Eric O you still use jasper engines or someone elses to replace customers engines with?

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Hodgkins says:

I (for one) like these "bite size" videos for big jobs like this. It's better for watching all the way through without interruptions. Sometimes when I pause a long video and come back a while later, the whole thing has refreshed and I have to start the thing over again. (Or the content creator won't get credit for a 'full watch')

Whatever you offer is good with me! Can't wait to see the lifting table!

Junk Yard Engine ? Fingers Crossed. ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿคช

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Justin A says:

I blew an engine in a jeep cj7 years ago 258 inline 6. And my dad helped me buy a new crate engine from Oreilys many many years ago. Warranty and all. I mean you buy a used engine from a junkyard or transmission as well yes the price is alot cheaper but do you know what you're getting? You don't know if they run or not or if a tranny has any problems. And usually.. well where I'm from I think they used to give you like a 30 day guarantee or something like that. I'm not knocking anyone's preference on what they want to do it's their own vehicle. But It's a big gamble. But I hope it all works out great.

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Derrik Skidmore says:

CHECK THE ECM CONNECTOR FOR CORROSION!! THE LOWEST CONNECTOR. WILL FIND COOLANT CORROSION FROM ECT SENSOR

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank Hartford says:

The lift table is nice for cradle drops, and being able the wheel stuff wherever you want.

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars K B says:

I like how they put 2 knock sensors on a 4 cyl engine. Itโ€™s like they know itโ€™s going to rattle itself to death.

If I was still working as a tech, Iโ€™d be forwarding this video to every service advisor I work with. So many of them would sell the โ€œcomplete assemblyโ€ engine labor time instead of long block time. Whatโ€™s the difference? Basically this entire video. Complete assembly assumes that you donโ€™t have to do a single thing to the engine once itโ€™s out of the car. Long block time includes swapping over the harness, manifolds, sensors, vacuum lines, etc. Stuff that takes a while and the tech should get paid for.

  95. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Casey James says:

Sucks when the broken engine looks brand new and the used good engine looks broken.

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars kenneth bode says:

    not your Daddy's Caddy

  97. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Michel says:

Did an engine r&r and a week later the nanny stuffed the car. No loss for me or the shop but a little bit disappointed to hear that all the hard work was lost. Keep up the good work!

  98. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andy Bonneau says:

Smart having the customer supply the used motor. Any problems with the engine, too bad. We would only supply remaned engines with parts and labor warranty.

  99. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lorrin Barth says:

It looks like a nice car. If I owned it I'd never take a chance on a junk yard motor, I'd want a new long block from GM.
