My 205 Caddy NorthStar leak Is between the water block and the engine. I'm having a deuce of a time just trying to uncover to get the water block out for new seals. I have spent hours just searching for a video to show me what has to be removed and how to unbolt and separate the water block. Your video on the thermostat makes me think you are the MAN. Any chance you have such a video?

Try a head gasket on that north star with the engine still in the car.
And no Sir it wasn't the easy one to do but it had to be the one against the firewall. 🥺🥺🥺

worst engine design ever. starter is INSIDE THE MOTOR, water pump requires special tools, and spark plugs are impossible to reach, OH did i forget to say they blow head gaskets every 3 years?

    Nice video

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Johnny Sechrist says:

Those were crap gaskets. I used three bond to glue it to the housing and a little three bond on the engine side of the thermostat.

Worst job? Owning two 4.6 N*'s.. 02' and 10'.. Love the cars but between the engineering and living up here by Eric O in the salt belt, even maint. can be tedious. Heater cores n blend doors, water pump, evap and moonroof drains, and all the emission and electrical gremlins; these cars have basically turned me into a level 2 GM tech with all the specialized tools I've acquired by doing the work myself! I wouldnt be able to own a Deville otherwise, they're almost Beamer/Benz level money pits.. These days even if you're capable of doing the work youre still gonna have to pay to program some new parts to ur car, with the list getting longer each model year – right to repair? LOL
Sorry to rant, and bless you and your family! Keep up the videos, power probe and oscilloscope work would be invaluable Eric, never too many videos on electrical gremlins!!

Funny watching your 2015 video and it's now october 2021..you're a skilled mechanic and a great teacher..yes I've worked on a northstar..99 caddy deville replaced a water pump, and even tougher job on that caddy was replacing a solenoid in the tranny with no room to remove the pan..I had to drop the cradle down far enough to get the pan off and finally got to that solenoid..what a pita ! Scary job too, the car wasnt 6 or 7 yrs old and my buddy's baby..I kept him away from my driveway for over a week while the cradle was sitting on cinder blocks and tranny exposed..job went well and problems solved , all was good until he lost control of the car coming off a ramp during middle winter and stuffed the nose into a solid snowbank..ouch!

Reason I started watching your channel is because you make sure that’s jobs are done right, no matter what car you show I enjoy and learn new things everyday, btw I put 2 Subaru’s motors together from block up one was 1990 Legacy other was 1993 Loyale wagon, yes they ran perfect afterwards😎💕😁

Cheers!! Keep up the good work! I appreciate your honesty with customers and viewers.

1996 Buick Skylark with the big 3.1v6. Had the classic intake coolant leak. I got it probably 90% tore down, and realized I wouldn't have time, tools, remaining stamina to get it done. So I put it back together, and sold it to a fella for $100.00. The car had 88K miles on it and was otherwise spotless. Seemed like every step I took led to a more nightmarish step.
I'll stick to brakes, shocks, CV axles and clutches. Much easier.

So, I am watching this video because I just bought my neighbor's 1998 Deville with the Deathstar in it. Took me a minute, but I realized I watched this video already…six years ago. Thanks for the great content Eric O'!

like your show, another problem with north star is water boils at a certen temp, now even with coolent it will reach a point it will still boyel an you do not want water boil in an engine, it creats bubbles an when that happens it causes a air block creating over heat, water will not move.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars douglas newton says:

i increased the by pass tube also to prevent clog, seem to work,,with orignal bapass tube where it connected to block on driver side of engine got cloged at block entrance, founf that when biue back with air, heared it pop.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars douglas newton says:

Question, heat is an enginens worse problem, now here me out, the north star is known to have a heateing problem, born with it, so thinking maby t stat to long in its socket, maby a shorter t stat would help solve the over heat problem, say a t stat for a gm engine like a chev 350 v8, thinking the t stat for north star to long creating to much tenison on t stat valve not letting it open for enough or soon enough , have one of these motors an i like to run cold t stat in summer an a 190 in winter, . just a thought, i know from experinse the cooler in summer the better when ac on, thanks

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phillip Jasper says:

Well he lucked out this time, just wait till next time when he is told the engine has to be removed to replace the metal lines between the fire wall and the engine from rotting out. I did my 99 without doing that , you get some rubber hose and re route it . Then I got rid of it and so long Gm .After 3 4 years there just a big money pit.Oh there was a number of other problems as well. This was my dream car back to the 50s what a dis apointmen .love your Chanel , wish were closer to me you would have a new customer. PS your are like700 miles away.

Witnessed a buddy mechanic peel off the layers to replace the clutch on a Mini. Hours of entertainment just to get to where the clutch is located. I really hate Northstars by the way. Over engineered p's o s and under engineered p's o s at the same time!?

Check the two speed fans. I had an 01 Eldorado. The low speed is probably bad that will cause damage to lots of parts getting too hot.

My worst job ever was replacing the heater core on my 1991 Corvette. Spent 8 hours getting the heater box screws and getting crap out of the way and 6 hours putting it back together. It was a nightmare.. I found doing the heads on it to be so much easier than that damn heater core

"The cat's in the bag" is from the old sailing Navy when sailors were punished by being flogged with the cat o' nine tails. When punishment was over, the flesh and blood were cleaned off the cat, and it was put back in the baize bag where it was traditionally kept. It means the job's done. It's opposite saying is "The cat's out of the bag now!" which means someone's gonna get it.
