In this video I have a look at a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban that came in with the SES light on with a code for the EVAP system. P0446 was the code stored in it. This one was a pretty easy fix -Enjoy!

Great follow along.. that sealing method on that sensor sucks to say the least. I've seen a split grommet/plug, on a similar install. The R/D staff was grossly out to lunch at the GM plant.
I have a 2007 Sub with only 74 miles. Check engine light turned on with OBD code P0446 (Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit 1/1. I've replaced the gas cap, vapor vent canister valve, vapor jumper wire and the Emissions Vapor Canister Purge Valve Solenoid EVAP Vent ( I don't think it's necessary but I did it anyway). Cleared it and the check engine light is gone but after driving 93 miles, the I/M is still not ready with a combo drive of city and fwy. Drove it for another mile and after 6 cycles, when I ran the OBD at 94 miles to see if it's I/M ready, unfortunately I see the same "pending" P0446 code despite driving it up to 110 miles hoping it will clear on it's own. So I decided to erase the pending code/OBD and did the same thing again. Drove it up to 92 miles without check engine, still not I/M ready and at 94 miles later it's still not ready and the "pending" p0446 code is back. I'd appreciate any suggestions on what to do so I can get this smog. Btw, I/M reads as: PdDTC (1), Evap (X), Cat (X) and the rest has a check mark/ready.

Thanks for the video! I've been chasing a P0446 in my 04 Suburban and "throwing parts at it." After changing the vapor cannister vent solenoid twice I might need to investigate the fuel tank pressure sensor. There was a TSB on relocating the vent solenoid above the transmission to keep it from fouling up–I might need to try that since I get this code about after about a year…
Ugh… I hate the gas tanks in Chevy vehicles 🤦♂️, especially when you have to replace the fuel pump😖.
Hi Eric. I just changed the sensor on the top of the fuel tank on a 2011 Chevy Silverado 5.3L flex fuel. After driving it less than a month and it threw the same code P0446. Any suggestions before I buy an Autel? Lol
I hope my mechanic is as determined as you are. Been in once and scheduled to go in again. P0446 code on 2006 Monte Carlo.

It's a common problem I have an 05 suburban that I'm dealing with the same kind of issues long starts I believe there is a common problem inside the fuel pump where they don't build up the proper pressure and hold it there until it starts I thought it would change after I replaced the pressure unit on top of the tank it did not
Love the show. Take a look at endoscopes for auto use. Some very nice ones at $ 35.00 to $ 40.00 with abilities for pictures as they use computer screen for “your eyes”. When you got up on the gas tank roof, the scope could have looked first. Best wishes.
GM and Chevrolet in particular is how mechanics put their kids thru college once you diagnose the 1st failure their are 100 more with the same failure mode in the pipeline. I used to work for a GM OEM supplier GM takes almost forever even to admit let alone fix a design flaw. I call it "industrial hubris" and politics and GM is in a class by itself in this regard.
Here In south Texas 2wd Tahoe’s and suburban’s are more popular because we lower them a bit and haul cheeks on the interstate

It seems a simple task to diagnose this problem but a hassle to repair it. I wonder if that other shop just did not want to do that job, fearing the undercarriage would be all rotted up so that those tank straps and bolts would be no fun whatsoever? Easier to farm it out to your shop and play dumb so the boss figures they had to do it that way. In the end, you had no trouble and hopefully made decent money on it.
I wish you would quit posting videos so I could get something done…. Not sure if you ever read these anymore, but just how many scan tools do you own? I am researching which one to buy, but dang, they sure are proud of'em!
I bought a used Envoy and the sensor was hanging by the gas tank and I couldn't figure out what it went to so I did a little research and found out and the nipple was still stuck in the tank so I pushed it into the tank because I couldn't see it I could only feel it and replaced the sensor and it worked fine.
How if you can find E cap problem without the fancy sorcerery gadgets
Before I even watch this video, I just wanna say: Eric, rust is just as bad in the south as it is in the north. We just get it in different areas of the car. I live in Texas, and tbh if the sun touches it, plan on rust. Down here the sun cooks everything to death. I have seen metal on cars reach over 200 degrees down here. Think about what that does to anything painted. So don't think we don't have rust buckets down here, because we do. Some are real bad.(rust holes in the roof and so on).
The cam position sensor could be starting to fail with that starting issue..

Had to replace the fuel pump in my 02 Yukon. I removed the rear driver side seat, drilled a hole and found the pump location with a borescope. I made a fiberglass panel before cutting a hole in the floorboard with an air chisel. Replaced the pump, painted the cut area and the fiberglass panel with a marine coating. Installed riv-nuts and bolted the panel down.
Any future work on the pump or accessories should be super easy. 🙂
Can you explain why the 2010 GMC Terrain has a crimp in the small dia metal tube, on the fuel filler neck?
The line connects to a plastic line that either goes to the tank or the vapor canister.
If the metal line goes to the vapor canister, then it just evacuates fumes from the tube?
When I zoomed into an aftermarket pic of the fuel filler neck, I also see a crimp.
If the tube is crimped, why is it needed?
Was it just a mistake and a quick fix by GM ?
Why is it that practically every single car that comes in this guy's shop is either a total piece of crap, rusted out, VERY old, uncared for and downright filthy inside and out?? Doesn't anyone in upstate NY have any pride of ownership or newer cars?? For once I would love to see a 2020/2021 car come in for basic maintenance in MINT condition!

Kind of an old vid from this winter folks that I kept in the archive for a couple reasons.
-First was the video quality on it sucked. Sorry bout that, I often get distracted working and forget to check on the camera.
-Second I wanted to make sure the customer had no issues and indeed the vehicle worked prefect, ran a full drive cycle and it has been several months with zero problems.
-THIRD and most important I wanted to get another Chevrolet in with this exact EVAP system on it with the very small purge line to the tank and canister so I could see the decay rate on it. Indeed these do bleed down very, very slow compared to the later model GM's with the larger line from the tank to the canister. Any how, more of a self reassurance thing I suppose. At any rate-Enjoy!
