Come along as I replace a water pump on a 2018 Chevrolet Trax. All in all not to difficult of a job.

Hi, Mr. O. This vid shows exactly why a DIY guy like myself should know a professional mechanic who knows his stuff. I lost count of how may items I would have broken trying to get that water pump out. That number doesn't include broken fingernails. I also appreciate your consideration to your viewers. Good lighting, good camera angles, humorous narrative, and an entertaining vocabulary all contribute to my experience. So true: "If you can do it, I can watch it." Anyway, thanks for sharing! Stay healthy!
The engine mounts are a nightmare to remove, on the Aveo/Corsa nearly impossible… A redesign should have been done years ago , but hey ho they never have to take them off at the factory. The coil packs are a common failure , but they always fail outside the warranty period and are a good seller. The timing chain sounds awful, miss oil changes and a partially blocked oil pick up…they are tiny and get hard oil crud in them .
Looks like rice to me. Great job DR. O
Still watching great job
The 2025 GM should have plastic cams, plastic crank, cardboard radiators. An bad grounds still.
I just have to stand up and give a round of applause for the cricket. Well played my chum. Well Played.
THis is why I drive push rod v8's.. torque to yield bolt on a damn water pump, and 71 inch pounds… jesus.. Daewoo garbage.
If you're not sure which bolt goes where … just look at the new pump ahead of install and each bolt should have a home based on how long the hole it travels through is!! Like 3 little bears …. some bolts will be too long for certain holes, and some will be too short, and some will be just right! Easy peazy if you just look at the hole lengths
Kitty wants the cricket.🐜🐈
Eric, area 51 is looking for I guy like you.
Ah just what I needed, another broken Chevrolet but at least I don't own this one. My 2013 Chevrolet with the big 3.6 liter is dieseling whenever the engine gets above optimal engine temperature, doesn't do it when the engine is cooler than its usual temp, just when it's toasty though fortunately the old bat hasn't decided to keep running when ignition is off. I suspect that residual fuel is creeping down into the combustion chamber from dirty injectors and igniting just enough for all six cylinders to move until the engine decides to stall. Kind of a strange thing to witness when the engine isn't carbureted.
When I was about 13, Dad's 55 Pontiac needed a new water pump. He was a tall and big man with an ample belly and could not lean over the radiator to do the job. He drafted me to do the work for him. That was my enjoyable intro to auto repair. I've been at it ever since.
good lord, there is zero reason it should be so involved to do a water pump
Does anyone like E-Torx fasteners? Not I.
The 2 bolts that you have to replace do they come with the new water pump
My friends seem to bring me this repair in various owners as skill level. So what I so appreciate is the small needed alignments, such as the pin, the top motor mount and bracket (as slightly lifted). And the real care as not to break tabs. As these units age, the tabs become very brittle. Even with the most careful pressures, will snap from age and heat cycles. So, as pricing these repairs to aged models, it is very prudent to include a bit of extra as small fitings estimated to need. And, as was shown, a new belt.
Thanks for having us along. M.
Eric have you tried the Milwaukee cordless ratchets
Only 4 years and the water pump seal is toasted. Not my kind of quality but I understand.
more food videos please they always make me hungry
Nice video, great for everyone to see how involved this job is. The upper radiator hose has a quick release thats easier to remove than the clamp. I remove the 3 thermostat bolts and leave the thermostat attached to the bypass hose instead of fiddling with that hose. The 3 horizontal motor mount bracket bolts and the 3 vertical bolts are all also torque to yield one time use bolts.
I changed the water pump on my 2014 cruze… I thought the pump was leaking….till I took the thermostat housing off and that just disintegrated brand new water pump and thermostat housing and was all good to go
My dad used to say, "GM" junk…Mrs. "O"
Does MeMaw need an Ivan miner's light?
Here's a guy who knows how to make a complete video:
SMA, Eric "O", I think if ur gonna get paid to make a video, then that's what u should do, and he does that
Here's guys who don't know how to make a complete video:
Toyota Maintenace…your lucky if u seem him do any work other than oil changes, very strange videos
One legged Honda Mechanic…good man but won't make a complete, unedited normal speed video
Ivan…I nicknamed him TCK, The Comeback Kid, all in good fun, seems like a good man, maybe stubborn, can't make a complete, unedited video
Josh is a SMA lifer…good man
Until next time, keeping them honest
Hey, doesn't GM have a recall for the pump on this engine ? Customer could get the repair for free!
Designed by creatures who don't have to work on them.
good job Mr O………better you than me
Had an Opel Cadet while in grad school (1980) and could not afford to have the water pump replaced so I bought a rebuilt one, a socket set, and a Chilton’s. It took me 10 hours, but it worked fine for the life of the car. Very satisfying. Best Regards Mr O
nice job
That belt tensioner looked a lot like ones on a Volvo D7 Diesel engine, had a coil spring and a wire cable and also no place to loosen tensions. Had to use a piece of wood and a long pry bar or your hand. We had about 40 of those engines out of a fleet of 100 trucks. What a POS they were, changed about 2 a week.
I always trace my parts on cardboard and jam the bolts through that where they went.
If I put them in the new pump I would absolutely knock the pump off of whatever I sat it on. Lol
As a BMW driver I an very familiar with water pump failures. I had 3 replaced in just under 2 years.
i always listen to the end you never know what you might learn.
I think I've got ptsd from stuff falling and not hitting the floor.
Amazing need a water pump so soon me I would of just done everything timing, plugs, coils, gaskets
Universal antifreeze is better then that awful deathcool
2018 and it needs a water pump? Yikes. I’ve had 15 year old cars on the original pump with no issues.
That's a great idea using the new pump to hold the screws to keep them in order.
Hiya Eric
Damn a 4 year old car w a leaking pump! I have a 10 year old Prius w 175k nothing leaks or have had any issues, It's a little trooper..
Four year old car and the water pump is kaput?
Yes, that's why they call them disposable cars.
Great video again Eric O love the comedy !!!
Great to see a Trax video. We moved from the Vibe to a Trax.
"I'm ugly, not stupid" The one liners are fantastic on your channel!
1.4 liter? First thought is WHY? and then i remember…. Oh yeah…Half a day's wages for fuel…
Is it just me or is the audio terrible? Sounds like thunder when the camera is overhead.
To change a water pump. One more reason i don't drive a GM car. Engineer should be kick in the head, then made to change a few.
Engine mount to the cylinder head? GREAT DESIGN!
I'm ugly, not stupid. Ah, the sage wisdom that falls from your lips.
Many Top Gun phrases. Have you seen Top Gun 2?
All I can say is I’m glad I’m retired. To have to take an engine mount off to replace a water pump!!!!
Good Job Mr.O I have Faith in you.
Look at that alternator. that looks a right scumbag to do
everyone does things their own way.. but… that rad hose is so easy to remove and reinstall just lift that wire and wiggle it off… push the wire back down and just push the hose back in till it clicks… easy peasy… just like the shit box VW.
good job boss
The boost does what again?
I love how you don't use generic coolant. It bothers me when people use the generic stuff LOL!
Hi Eric and the Lovely Mrs. O.,I always used the gasket and outlined it on a piece of cardboard but there's not a gasket, use the water pump like Eric O.
Great video
Dr. Pissy Pants (love your videos) do you ever run into old (wrong) coolant and new coolant turning funny colors…like brown?
hell yeah…a few years ago were were headed south in he 2008 town and country. developed a leak in the housing from the radiator to the engine. sruck in friday night slow freeway traffic near mt.vernon KY. Finally got off to the exit. Got flat-bedded to a shop nearby….the due had mud trucks and some drag cars and I knew we were in good hands. 5 years later and the '08 town and country is still running strong. Thanks to those dudes in KY….
I have to thank you for showing me how to use heat on rusty NY bolts. You saved me a lot of cussing and drilling.
Chevrolet trax …That there is a Daewoo Trax…..The older style engine the timing belt ran the water pump ,,,,,They were crap ,,,,,,water pump spun to adjust tension for the timing belt
Nice to see you using a 1128 again. I was worried you'd given up on them.
Thanks again for the entertainment.
Did this on the son-in-law’s similar Chevy (Daewoo) Cruze—second new pump on his second engine. Service data calls for Loctite on the pulley bolts. I was all out of blue, so I used orange. V Remind me not to do the next one 😉
Seems like the ACDelco is better built than the GM Genuine pump, too…
I think I would have thrown a rag over that intake manifold inlet. It was just beginning to swallow a loose nut or something…
You been working out? 💪
I almost want to do one of the chain driven water pumps. They old quad 4 and the older 2.2 eco techs
I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado LS 2500 4wd 6.0 LS with 270k on the truck living in northern lower Michigan my pump just now started a leak original one also busted it's first brake line last week. Almost sold my truck for $1600 today
This is like the third video with that 03–05 LX Element sitting there. Motor job due to head gasket or lack of valve adjustments? How’s the rear trailing arm mounts?
K.I.S.S. that is way to complex for a tiny motor…$100 for a thermostat, that's insane. Tesla will eat your lunch.
I like to watch the reassembly portion most of all. Being a mechanic all my life the most relaxing and rewarding part is where you got the old oart pulled, the cleanup done and now the reward of reassembly. It's just relaxing. Thanks Eric..
Doodlidoo – they are great when they influence each other – excellent. Pssst he stole your brake clean skit but you already know that.
And this is why I don't like sideways engines. Too much work involved to remove something simple.
Ill stick with SUVs with what I call normal engine placement, with the belts at the front. Just easier to access the things ill replace without doing this much tear down.
Like my 08 exploder, alternator is up top and easy to get to. Water pump is also within easy reach. Only complaint is the damn passenger side wires routed behind the nator.
Great job, thanks for sharing this one Eric!
yes heater, so the computer can make the thermostat open sooner, for what ever reason.
And to see the cummins 5.9L has two bolts to change…what a frankenstein job and the thow away wire harness.
I love it please continue to do things the same as you are
Awesome channel to watch, very informative. Might not be today or next week but months later I come across the same things. Green wires and ppl that poked wires with test leads that have no power leading to where they should.
Starting to feel like gm uses more 15 mm fasteners than any other maker
So I'm listening very attentively, I hear some crickets chirping in the background. So I'm gonna guess you are working sometime between 7-9pm at night with the garage door wide open. Am I right?
wouldnt be the 1.4l if it didnt leak
That looks like some tensioner that might have been designed in the 70s
GM has a special coverage for the water pump on most cars with the 1.4L so this repair could be done for free at dealership but it’s only up to 120,000 miles
Your shop lion is loud!
To replace the belt another stupid design like on some of the 3.8 motors have to remove a motor mount to service a belt just stupid good job GM.
Great video O's
Oohhh so the rad hose was hittin on ya eh Mr.O what a savage rad hose 😂 I'm tellin Mrs.O
1.4L, is that like 12.5 Hp??
A 1.4 isn't big 🤣
Ok👍👍👍
You make it look so easy! In reply to your motto, I quote dirty Harry. "A man needs to know his limitations" Thank you for bringing us along!
What a piece of garbage….
Funny how you always say the car has "A BIG" – 1.4 or 1.5 or 2.5 liter or whatever! Speaking of that engine, is it me or does it like a barrel full of rocks rolling down a hill when its running ? LOL
Love your videos but I could get into a lot of trouble fast attempting this one!
4 YRS OLD AND ALREADY NEEDS A PUMP?
Very nice, Eric O.! I have an '08 Saturn Astra with a 1.8 L Ecotec. Mine's an XER, though, so after air box and serpentine belt removal, there are 8 bolts: 3 for the pulley, and 5 for the pump. I'm about to roll 110,000 miles and the pump is just starting to weep, so I suppose the seals are about to go. Pump is on order and should arrive next week. Cheers!
A 2018 car that needs a water pump already? I want one of those! Great video!
Of course I’m still watching Eric! How else am I gonna win that prize I keep hearing about🤣
