Got a 2012 d-max and the def heater went out (it was mid summer 80+degrees) while we were camping a few years ago. Had to come home immediately because the truck had just enough miles left before speed limitation kicked in. Truck had about 22k on it at the time. GM fixed it under a campaign due to def heater troubles. No charge. very thankful. But I did pay for a NOX sensor then.
Now the same truck has 27k on it and got DEF fluid bad. Dealer has had the truck 6 weeks now and DEF repairs are running so far at $2,400. Plus, another new NOX sensor at $600, and leaking steering box $1400. Looking at $4,400 approx right now. Truck does not plow and is put away in the winter. Live in WNY outside of Rochester. The storage aggravates the def and it gets old. Not driven enough to use up the DEF before it gets old. I only add a gallon at a time when it needs it and discard the rest.
I do believe that the dealer is doing their best. It is a design issue- not very robust for sure.

Thank a lot sir, I really appreciate you going through the steps for us regular guys, looking for something like this…
    I have the same problem..
But after seeing your video there is no doubt in my mind that I could do it as well

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Longman says:

If this doesn't make the manufacturers examine the dealership nothing will!

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tim WILSON says:

All the new diesel's are junk ever since the EPA started the mandate requirement for particular filters and diesel exhaust injection fluid injectors no matter if it's a Ford Chevy Dodge Kenworth Freightliner Peterbilt whatever . They all require constant maintenance every time you turn around sometimes multiple times per week and none of the dealers can ever seem to get them right you spent more time on that one than I think most of the shops that work on them doing a week for about 10 of them which probably answers why it never gets done right at the dealerships or God forsake Penske.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Brosius says:

I wonder if GM paid Big 0. for the service.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Kingery says:

What Autel scanner are you using, thanks for the video I replaced my DEF heater today and need to clear the DEF code.

I'm aparently way behind in viewing your Youtube videos, but I only recently dicsovered your channel. Got a lot of catching up to do. Anyway, near the end of this video (Dec. 5, 2015) you picked up the "little bag of goodies" that had not been used. It occurred to me that those items were caps and plugs for the openings you had covered with items from your box of plugs and caps collection. I may be way off base, but just thought I'd put in my 2cents worth.
Still loving your channel and watching 2 or 3 videos per day. Keep up the great and entertaining work.

Is there anything you can't fix? Nice one Mr O. Would be nice to have heard the conversation between GM and the Dealership. But if it's still under warranty then doesn't this void the entire Warranty on the Truck even if they couldn't fix it? Dealership 'get out clause'. I know what they are like.

Ive had this prolbem with my 2014 GMC. deelers and most diesel mechanics will scam you and replace parts that are perfectly good because they know that the avrage person dosent have the scan tool to run the tests even if they change out the heater

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Leon says:

I see these type of codes on the 6.7L Ford Diesel engines and replacing that sender is almost always the fix. Great diag on this one. You were right, this is a gravy job

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars fishin11 says:

Love your videos, I think your brilliant. Iโ€™m a marine tech and what Iโ€™m curious about is why you donโ€™t check/test the part, in this case the heater before you put the tank back in the truck. (Unless you do off camera). There has been quite a few times either me or my fellow mechanics, have put in new parts and they donโ€™t work, then itโ€™s got to come apart again. We test, if possible before putting back together.

you remind me of a wolverine or a tasmanian devil…when it sets eyes on the target it never lets go until the prey item is entirely within the belly of the wolverine…..i don't understand why the gods permit you to do miracles with cheap brittle plastic while every time i try to do something similar the plastic ends up cracked and broken into about 4 pieces…..very good video….you seem to be able to regularly do things that more or less defy the laws of physics

My bet is as soon as they saw the Vin didn't pertain to this vehicle they stopped and did not go on like the Obrechta Polish wonder.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Evan Wilson says:

How do you cycle the heaters? My shop has the Snap On Apollo scanner and have done some googling, and I can't find anywhere that tells me how to toggle them on and off.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chuck Neil says:

GM should offer the whole DEF tank as a rebuilt or remanufactured unit so you wouldnโ€™t have to do all the fine details.

This is good stuff. You actually have the right tools :). And smart about looking at codes and specifications with a cautious eye. As we saw in part one with the wires changing colors. It also helps with my understanding about these repairs can get expensive. thanks!

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bass Hunter says:

From what I gather (numerous blogs/vids) a diesel fuel system pump , injectors is extremely tighter (tolerances) than a gas system. So keeping contaminants out is a very good idea.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Newton says:

Mine didn't have a code, just poor quality Def fluid, they changed the injector

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hawk 1966 says:

    If GM made everything right with the customer;
    1) Why wasn't it replaced under warranty
    2) Did Eric do the job simply because the owner distrusted the dealer?
Not that I begrudge Eric the cash flow but if my truck were under warranty the dealership would find a 'diesel guy' to do the repair or they'd be buying me a new truck. Don't have the whole story but this doesn't seem like GM did Jack squat for the owner. Big kudos to Mr. O for figuring it out on the fly.

That show brought back painful memories, I had the same thing happen on my 2012 3500 gmc mister good wrench replaced the tank and everything attached, truck ran for about two years and the def system went into limp mode again, this time the good wrench guy couldnโ€™t fix the issue, he did two regeneration burns and replace the recalled nox sensors, then gave it back to me $800 later. I fired it up in their parking lot and it was still in limp mode, they took it back in and cleared the codes and did another regen burn it didnโ€™t change anything, they told me it needed a complete new exhaust system at over $8000 I told them to not do it, I drove it home in limp mode. After searching the issue and not having much luck I did a delete of the def system and new exhaust, and itโ€™s been 3 years and not any issue and saved a ton on def cost. When I took the old exhaust off the cat was not plugged just pure white porcelain, they were trying to soak me for a new exhaust. Cost me $1700 for the new exhaust and delete mods. Bad dealership nothing by bad reviews online for them, needless to say Iโ€™m going to another dealership, but an extra hour drive no issues at all.
