In this video I have a look at a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu with the 2.4 ecotech fresh from the auction. The check engine light is on with the infamous P0016 and P0017 codes. 90% of shops will just slam a timing set in it, but how do you 100% know what it needs? Could it be a slipped reluctor ring on the cam? It only takes a few minutes to bee 100% Remember, TEST DON'T GUESS! -Enjoy!

I have the same car/engine with 100K Miles and it may need to get the cam chain replaced. Would it be wise to replace the cam chain driven water pump (which is still OK) while the cam chain work is being done? Is their a savings to getting that done at the same time? Thanks.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars AJ W says:

Yup I would like to see the timing chain change. Thanks.

Just a question I have a motis age from Snap-on and I tried to set it up using the scoop like you did on the Chevy but I couldn't get any readings off of the the screen I mean it wasn't reading anything I don't know if I hooked it up exactly as you did my stupid me has two channels so I don't know if that's a reason or if I'm doing something wrong or I would like some advice if you can help me out I'm I'm new to using a scope

i just did this about 4 months ago for my girl and she let the oil get low and now she got the p0016 and 17 codes and i just took it apart and i do not see anything out of time. the crank is at 12 o clock and the cams are 10 and 2 o clock so i;m not sure what to do. i changed the crank sensor the other day and the code returned, do you have any ideas? how can i tell of the reluctor moved? i do not have all those scanner that you have.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bob palmer says:

do you know if this is the same on the le8 engine? being it has 3 exhaust cams in it? and the same phaser for both cams i'm getting the same codes 11 16 17 and i did a complete timing chain guides tensioner phasers and rings and bearings? plus seals. it ran good all winter and now she said it is a bit jerky and stumbles a bit. and these codes came back. she cleared them and i told her to send me the next code to see if the first code is causing the other codes. i did put in new cam solenoids and she got tons of codes so i put the old ones back in. the old ones did click when i powered them and they did have like 12 ohms. so i may put in the new solenoids and see if the codes come back. she does get othe oil changed at 3000 miles. so do you think i have a cam relutor ring slipping? and will that cause it to run rough?thanks, It's jumpy like before. It sputtered a tiny bit that was barely noticeable the day before the oil change

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Seth King says:

I have a 2011 Malibu with the 2.4L that stretched timing chain. Have since replaced it and several other things car runs good but throws code p0017. Someone mentioned a slipped reluctor wheel, would the car run and idle fine if it slipped?

What an interesting video. I knew modern cars were complex but didn't know the complexity in diagnosing them. I would love to work on cars for a living but the knowledge you have seems like it work take years to get there. Enjoying the videos

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Carlos Ybarra says:

Is there a video how to fix it or do we just take it to the dealership to fix it??

This is so much to take in and not get me anywhere… I get how this could be useful to real mechanics and I guess this is my first sign my P0016/P0017 issue it outside of my DIY ability

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tyler Williams says:

the in cylinder pressures are so cool. im new to getting into the scope and just used it to find a timing advanced issue. im really interested in this in cylinder issues. would love to see more videos. you explain it very well. i know this is an old video but for the next video i recommend slowing down and either showing a known good and explaining more or taking more time to see what the pressures should be. atleast thats where i got a little lost. anyways i love all your videos keep it up!

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bob palmer says:

i got phasers and the original phasers are #3 and the new ones i got are #3 and #2 the exhaust is #3 and the intake turns out came as a #2. the cams are both the same like the phasers are. the new units require the cams to be at 7 and 5 o'clock the original is 7 and 10 o'clock so do you think i can take the #2 intake phaser and move it around so that the alignment pin is at the 10 o'clock spot and the arrow is at the 2 o'clock spot? when i got these the fitment chart said they fit my engine. turns out I have the LEA engine and that is a different engine from the rest. thanks

I'm working on a 2013 malibu 2.5 code p0017 no live data on scan tool for exhaust side replaced timing kit and both sprockets I also replaced both cam sensors any suggestions

I have a Chevrolet Captiva 2011 (2.4L) eco tech engine. At cold start engine cranks but doesn’t start until after a second start which it runs rough for about 5secs till it stabilizes itself. I changed fuel pump. Prior to this you neeeed to crank about 4times when cold before it starts. Ran a scan and no fault code. Do you have any first hand experience about this problem. I need to say my catalytic converter has been removed because it got blocked so now it’s empty so you think this can cause such a problem

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Missing DLL says:

Excellent information, I happen to own the same car but white in color. These also seem to have issues with the BCM connectors needing di-electric grease on the C2 connector near the front passenger floorboard. Symptoms of this can cause your brake lights to be illuminated when you are not on the brakes. Also, the brake lights will turn off when you apply the brakes…Also…Can make your thermostat gauge not work as well as the A/C Compressor.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chuck Wood says:

Working on a car with the same problem found here. Timing chain is actually ADVANCED on the crank gear. Any idea what causes this?

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andre Reed says:

Hello there… I enjoy all your video's. I have a car like this and was wondering would a bad timing chain tensioner cause this? Is there a part 2 of this video. I've kept my maintenance so good but started having issues. Please share a video so I may have watch and maybe lead me a conclusion. Thanks and love your videos.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Topher Howdy says:

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jose Alfaro says:

Is there a follow up to this video where you replace/fix what you diagnosed? I know its two years later but my car is having similar issues now. Plus for some reason a coolant leak right around the left side of the engine.

Man, As a wanna be, Driveway champion, Doing what I have to, to get bye… I wish that I had a garage & all the fancy tools! Training would be needed! All the tools in the world is great & all but, without knowing how to use them properly, all-4-nuffin…lol. Love your video's! You, Ivan, & a small hand full of others, exude your knowhow & experience! I was looking for a cheap, Good vehicle & I had worked allnight & taxied arround a family member all day & stopped by a car lot & was testing the water! when I saw a 07 G5 & took it for a ride! There was a shimee but, I assumed it just needed new tires! NO, ALL 4 WHEEL ARE BENT! TAPPING AT START UP-NEEDS TIMING CHAINS! & A small host of other issues & one by one, I am addressing every issue! Yea, The moron who puts way to much into a vehicle but, I REFUSE TO BE BROKE DOWN ALONG SIDE ANY ROAD! I just ordered a complete timing kit from ebay (yea, I know better but, money restrictions & I get more 4 my $$$) I ordered the timing tensioner that screws into the rear of the engine & THANK GOD THAT I HAD A EXTENDABLE, ANTENNA STYLE, SMALL MAGNET AT ARMS LENGTH WHEN I CHANGED THAT TIMING TENSIONER BECAUSE, IT CAME APART! I ordered a dr.engine timing kit from ebay which includes both chains, front cover w/oil pump & front oil seal & front cover gasket, water pump & gasket, all guides, oiler, both cam gears, new cam bolts, & guide bolts (8 bolts in total) & top chain guide- $124.88 after tax=$133.93. I also ordered 2 new coolant tube O-rings, & a new crank bolt! picked up a small tube of grey gasket maker. Still need dexcool & 5 quarts of oil & a filter & I want a new oil pan gasket so that, I can inspect the oil pan & oil pick up screen!!! What coolant do you recommend in a 07 Pontiac G5??? One day, I will have my own shop! I would love to learn from Ivan & you Mr.O! Or at least the school that Ivan attended…I cannot think of that school's name…

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Smith says:

I don't understand how some shops operate with only basic tools and " training " – I've got a feeling in my big toe . How do you hang over $ 1000.00 parts and labor on a car and NOT fix it ? Then give the customer some dumb story – the car is old , it was was worn out anyway or it's a layered problem . The best one " the car can't be fixed " . What's wrong with it – " I don't know " . How do they get away with it ? Beware ANY auction vehicles ! Nice diagnosis . Training and tools , the scope , are an investment !

    Good work E.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brandon Buford says:

what ended up being the problem after you finished repairs?

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Oldblue’s HHR channel says:

In my experience with these Ecotec engines a P0016 indicated the timing chain has skipped a tooth, mostly due to the front guide upper bolt breaking and the guide getting chewed up.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars beanersrule4ever says:

What symptons did this car have? Besides the obvious check engine light of course. I have these same codes on an 09 malibu qnd it sputters qnd has low power in 1st gear and idles rough at times

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dennis luck says:

I parked my car with the trunk open and killed the battery, now the car shudders in drive and dies….I replaced all the sensors, and nearly at the end of my rope???? The engine lites on, Low power and anti brake?????

Where do you get the "service bulletins"?

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Slepski says:

Once again your skills at diagnose are highly impressive as well as all your other mechanical skills. What was the issue concerning that vehicle if you can say? I watched the whole video waiting for the answer and I got a report, a good one although the actual issue which was causing the timing to advance?

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rick West says:

What was wrong? How did it get advanced? Was someone turning it backwards by hand, without hydraulic tensioner, and jumped teeth on the crankshaft? Haha. Only thing I can think of.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ernie Henshaw says:

Love Your channel.Semi Retired shop owner 36 yrs from Mass. You're a super tech .Honest And Thorough.Keep em coming i'll keep watchin.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars shaun T says:

So what does he need done to get the car fixed?

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lee Hulbert says:

The known good waveform came from a completely comnected, running engine. You had the phaser solenoids dis-connected. Don't the phasers retard valve timing?

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ian Ian says:

Cam crank correlation? roadside sobriety test more like. Cam curuhank curulllyah..da. those cuffs come with a lifetime guarantee officer? They sure did snap on quick. Lemme try again: cam curank coroloh just how long am i in for?

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MC says:

I appreciate the video, my 2009 malibu very likely has a slipped reluctor wheel on one cam, as a shadetree mechanic I can't afford these scanners nor does it make sense to spend the money, but shame on GM for building such a pile of crap, adding a key to the reluctor ring would have cost them what? few cents? now I have a perfectly well running car with excellent gas mileage, 250,000 miles and possibility of running for another 250, but instead it will end up in a junkyard as engine swap at this point would cost more than its worth (bonus misery, GM doesn't even have the camshaft I would need because of the strikes, thanks GM!)
