In a previous video https://youtu.be/1fMd0zUejL0 I showed a Chevy truck with an EVAP leak and we could hear it leaking form the top of the tank. I told you it was because the plastic fuel sending unit cracks under the stress of the rusted lock ring. Now it is time to show you what I mean.

That folks. Time for a follow-up This is the fuel tank out of that 2017 2017. Chevrolet Uh, we did the EVAP leak on it you guys saw in a previous video and it was gurgling up here and I told you guys I Suspect that the plastic fuel sender here is broken because of a really crappy design from GM and B the rust that swells up and then cracks it plastic. We're gonna explode some of the junk out of here.
Foreign: I Don't think you're going to see any of the cracks until we take it off. Usually they're all busted around the edge where the O-ring is now. I Have no way to take this off without being violent with it. Okay there hammer because we need to save the tank.
Foreign like that. Then we can try to get it moving. Be careful your air hammer doesn't chisel down into the tank. Foreign go all the way.
Grab another rag. Josh Foreign foreign. This one looks like Taft broke. Yeah, sure it is missing half this lock which at the end of the day really doesn't matter.
there's that one. that lock was here broke. Okay, the only nice thing about this style is you don't have to buy all the fuel lines now. grab some brakes on there.
Josh This is Joshua's third fuel pump this weekend. GM so it's getting pretty good at him typically. Uh, you know they're metal and they rot out within a couple years here. And the salt belt say it's funny that? Okay, let's get that.
Now you're going to ask the question of how do I know it wasn't cracked or how I know you know air hammer that didn't crack it? You gotta trust me people, you got it might not be cracked I could be lying to you, but I'm not. Let's see here before you pull it up out of there, we'll give it. Yes, there. she's cracked around there.
You can see it right here. I Don't know if you guys can see it, but we're on a chance here in a second. This is pretty common on plastic sending units metal lock rings and they very conveniently stick it in a well so it gets leveled up with salt and dirt and hits and then you can see right here. hopefully probably a little bit.
should probably crack right there. All right. in case you guys weren't believing me, now you do. Oink there it goes.
A little bit of luck it might fit out I usually make it so tight. well it's got lots of room. well there he is. Take the old o-ring off there.
Uh, you got a less dirty rag? Yeah I'll use this one. This one worked out pretty well because the tank was almost empty. I only had I think if you remember from the first video it said it only had four gallons in it. calculated that's gotta be pretty close to that.
We took it out, it was pretty light but we I mean Josh see the pump there you guys? We swapped the uh fuel level sensor over got some schmoo on it though. Foreign looks pretty good. Make sure you index it correctly when you put it in. We buy OEM units right from the Mad and then a new lock.
Ring Of course because I'm ready from Gm2 because they're cheaper than aftermarket. believe it or not, at least. uh, when we purchase them. Thank you foreign folks.Just a matter of sliding it back together now. but I wanted to bring you along to show you what we're gonna find out. I'll show you what we found out. Okay, so we're saying trust issues going on there.
and if any of your locks those those locks that we took off ain't them are broke, don't get too. Uh, don't get too wound up about it because that's not really what we retains a mind there. but we'll stick them back on because we're making a YouTube video so it just keeps somebody from depressing that tab. I Guess that's about it.
and then this one was half broke so we're not gonna worry about it. it's evap anyway, so if it comes off big deal, it won't come off though so we're not too worried about it now. That's it folks. Uh, thanks for watching foreign.
They make a special tool to take the lock ring off I made my own
I’ve watched several of your videos now and just wanted to say Keep up the great work..! I think anyone thinking about joining your profession, should have to watch your video’s to learn proper diagnostic procedure’s and work ethic !!
Keep it up 👍and take care
Man i thought i was the only dude having to use a knee pad!! harbor frieght w a coupon!
People are freaking out over how cruel this is but what about the millions of family’s who do the same thing to their dogs to keep them from barking or keep them within the parameters of their yard. It wouldn’t take much shock at all even barely a sting for the bear to get scared like that because it’s something it isn’t used to. He isn’t being electrocuted. Go watch the full video. Spoiler alert… the bear comes back and figures out where the shock is coming from and disconnects the battery and takes off with the meat. Bears are extremely intelligent.
Awesome video Eric O.
Hey, if ya cant trust someone from Avoca, NY, who can ya trust?
what no fluid film on the new lock ring ?
Brake Kleen..for the Ring..!!
Thanks for the follow up Eric. The rust jobs that you have to do daily is incredible and for the people that don,t believe in what you say and you have to justify what you say and do , well up them.
It's pretty pathetic for GM with engineering facilities in Michigan, where the vehicles are even more rusty than the PRNY (and unsafe with no safety inspections), to put a metal retainer in that location on the top of the tank.
As a desert dweller from the Mountain West, I’m always shocked by how rusty relatively new cars get in the ole PRNY 😂
Thanks for part two. Whether they are 9 minutes long or an hour or more I always watch your videos completely. There are very few content creators on YT that can be interesting for more than a few minutes. Keep em coming!
Thanks for the sequel. I can't wait for the prequel. That's how Star Wars made Lucas rich and famous.
snap on air hammer?where is big nasty
ah …snap on or big nasty?what happened to big nasty?
Somebody could make some money sellin a good grade stainless lockring up there to the salt belt . If they didn't get to proud of em could sell em to everyone
How filthy. I couldn’t handle living up in PRNY. No way.
I must get bad cans of brake and parts cleaner because the sound effect never plays when I pick one up.
so Eric, is there a torque spec for that metal retainer? 🙂
Haven't seen a Gulf gas station in years.
Who is Joseph?
No Fluid Film in the "well"?
i've gotten a dead aftermarket pump once and a few that had incorrect/bad fuel tank pressure sensors and fuel gauge level readings. Also had a tab of one of the pumps nearly get cut in half just from putting fuel ring on. The plastic on some of those are so thin compared to the gm ones. Also worth noting, if you have a fuel capless gm truck 14-18 and you work in a dusty super dirty environment, look into getting a cap or use a bearing buddy that'll fit over it, dirt will eventually infiltrate and take out your fuel pump.
Just curious, do you smoke it again after everything is put back together?
You should put Josh on the spot, ask him if he watches your video's
Safety squints!
Thank you Eric, i really thought that there was that much water coming out of your air hose.I was going to say it is time to put a filter or 2 in the lines..lol.Great job as always.
the facebook? the instie?
I guess the other places didn't want to remove the tank!
So if you can do it, we can't? You never said we can.
Josh you missed a golden opportunity to ask Mr. O if he was having a stroke on account of the way he was talking
So, no other manufacturers have this issue?
Josh just being a sponge, good on him
Ok, ok, ok. I believe you already!
we had to do this on our 2007 suburban in 2019. That's 13 PRNY salty winters! That job SUCKED!
Question!! is there a specific reason for using the green brake cleaner
Nice follow-up….
On fuel pumps, better to go OEM.
I don't know why anyone would not trust you.
The crack in that old sending unit looks like a job for Flex Seal!
(kidding)
Why do I always chuckle with the brake clean thing???
If the engineers had to spend 2 years turning wrenches, cars would be so much better. Thank you for showing this mistake of design Eric. Your work was great as always.
That is a 2017? GM has fallen further than I thought….
