In this video we finish up the rear brake job we started on this Express van but I think most of the time is spent harassing Mrs.O. Needless to say the brake job turning out good and the new tires ride nice and smooth! -Enjoy!

At Walnut Ridge, AR airport used to be an Army Airfield during WWII well my dad used to watch all these airplanes come in with holes from the war fly in some on 3 engines some having to belly land because the gear would not go down. The workers used to take everything off of the airplanes tip them on their nose to be ready for the chopper and then the smelter. All those instruments (gages, switches, toggle switch) where put in 45gal drums submerged in cosmoline and buried. You can go out there today and dig them up and they will work perfectly because of the cosmoline.

Old video but I see you use torque sticks for lug nuts tightness.

The hat he wears keeps all of that dirt on the wheel well from dropping into the hair. I really hate all that stuff getting in my eyes and hair while on jacks on the ground.

It strikes me that these vehicles need to have a good jet wash before you work on them.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Durkin says:

Man alive, you need to install an under carriage wash at your door

I do like what you do… I've done brakes before myself so I know exactly what you're doing however I don't understand why you would replace the rear diff cover unless it's got a crack or a leak there should be no reason to replace it

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars w2dmw says:

Archeologist, yes, but you need a vacuum cleaner to clean that puppy up for the brake cable work.
I found out for myself, years back, it's easiest to pressure wash jobs like that beforehand, and work clean, like a gentleman. It saves having to clean up more mess on the shop floor after the job is done.
Good job, as always Rick, a treat to see you work…….

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Keith Walker says:

If it's any help to new starts, if you're unsure of what you're doing with brake shoes, do one side at a time keeping the other as a reference till you're happy with the job. The brake shoes on this vehicle are fairly straight forwards as they're only for the handbrake. But more often than not there are springs, clips and tricky self adjuster mechanisms and after removing them it can be hard to figure where they go. This is strictly for brakes and not for wives! Under no circumstances have a second wife to practise your technique on! 😳

Best smell ever…Trichloroethylene. It was the main chemical in tapping fluids, might still be. And back in the 70s-90s, Chicago Pneumatic would grease their tools with Mobile EP grease that smelled like it had been perfumed. And cosmoline, wow, once you have spent an afternoon with various attempts to remove that stuff, you understand why the product underneath is still in new condition.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brent Owen says:

Sweet! There's a tool for that…I've been using an air hammer to get the cable to cable holder thing apart…

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ACCORDing To Andy says:

That van is disgusting. Don't people know there is a thing called a carwash. They even have the ones where you drive into and wash it yourself. It even has high pressure wash to most of that crap off the underneath of the van.

So I have a complete stupid viewer question.

Why not obviously you couldn't do it in the winter time but why not hit these powder coated crusted vehicles with a pressure washer in the areas that you're going to be working before starting work Even a day before you know or a few hours before so it would drip drive certain degree.
    Just wondering.
Hey somebody's got to ask the stupid question.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dick Tomasko says:

Take a couple of lite globe spring clips and mount them to a harbor freight 5k lumen 4 foot tube light which comes plug n play. Lighting issues done

You need a hat brim mount for a gopro type camera, and a head light mount.
