In this video we replace a faulty CV shaft in this 2012 Honda Odyssey. After we replace it, we tear apart the old one and have a look inside to see what is making the "clicking." -Enjoy!

so i have a 2017 subaru impreza with 139,000 miles on it. i try to stay on top of repairs as much as possible. pepboys replaced my front brake rotors and pads less than a month ago. they replaced my rears today. after backing it out of a parking spot today i noticed the wheels on the front left and front right clicked at the furthest the the left and furthest to the right positions that would be used during sharp turns, u turns and backing out. it does not happen while driving, i do not notice any sound or vibration. the boots closest to the wheel hub bearing all seem intact, no leaks or smells visible. as well as pepboys saying they saw nothing wrong. i cannot get under the car far enough to see the inner boots that would be near the diff/tranny. what are the chances i will have to replace the entire axle? i suppose the inner boots could be worn but they are covered by a skid plate so that seems unlikely. it doesnt click anywhere near as bad as this.

Never had noise taking off mine only made noise when braking at a very low speed n it finally went since I didn't know where the noise was coming from lol n the shaft stripped out on mine which I was surprised

I know this video has some age on it now, but it was excellent and very informative. I will be replacing the left axle on my son's '05 Altima as soon as the parts come in.

can a broken one cause a car not to move and make a lound noise putting it in to gear when the car is in neutral it's a steady click click click but in drive it
clangs awful and car will not drive

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Azim Shaikh says:

Do you have to change both driver and passenger side

Nice find on the bad Cv axle Joint the balls are nice and clean lots of pitting on the Races Though Eric O ๐Ÿ‘ @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Clinton says:

My opinion as a fellow 2012 Odyssey owner with a failed CV joint that DID NOT leak out the grease, the factory CV joints are not beefy enough for what is essentially a truck. In this day and age, there should be no reason a CV joint fails, if not abused, but Honda cuts a lot of corners on their Odysseys presumably to keep the cost down for families but no doubt to prop up their bottom line since the Odyssey is so popular. I had the engine rebuilt only four or five years in due to some recall issue. SMH. Anyway, I DID NOT go with genuine Honda CV joints. Not only do they cost more, AFAIK Honda won't warranty the part the way an aftermarket parts dealer will since failure is nearly guaranteed.

Thanks for your time for making this video. This is first video I have seen on YouTube about thorough damage investigation. Anyone can go by mechanicโ€™s diagnostic after seeing this video.

It was interesting to see your fault search and see how bad the balls had broken the surfaces on the outer and inner parts of CV Axle Joint.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John O says:

The dodgy way to stop it clicking, all you have to do is swap the CVs from right to left (and vice versa) then the balls will run on the undamaged areas.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Oby-1 says:

Yep, OEM always unless there is no other way. Who needs a call back? Nobody.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Meredith says:

That's CV it's just flat worn out there , and this one is obviously not rebuildable .

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars LadyAnuB says:

    Eric,
My suspect for why the balls were ok and the races showing damage is the actual steel used in each component. The balls are probably tougher steel than the races so the races will get damaged before the balls. Probably cheaper to get an already manufactured ball bearing of tougher grade steel to use in the joints then have thousands made to a specified grade?

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars AllThingsUnrelated says:

Hi Eric. I thought maybe at one point after you took it off and couldnโ€™t see any issues with it you thought, โ€œmaybe it wasnโ€™t the CV axle that I just replacedโ€ haha. My 2005 Colorado CV external portion is torn and I have the notorious โ€œclickโ€. I also noticed when I turn my heat blowers on, I smell fumes. Is that just the grease from the CV axle fuming out or do you think I have an additional issue? Thanks for taking the time with the video and โ€œedjumakatingโ€ us all!

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim Woodring says:

Good video. That was one of life's mysteries. Why do cv axles make clicking noises and what it looks like. As a mechanic myself I never torn one apart like that. So it was very interesting to me. Thanks for the video as I have watched alot of yours. I definitely like the electrical/using multimeter to find voltage lose.. Keep making videos your doing great.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheTimtam112 says:

Hmmmm, if that's what a dead CV joint sounds like then I'm really not sure what my clicking sound is. Mine is a far lower frequency, almost as if it's only occurring every one or two revolutions of the rotating assembly.

Maybe something with the wheels, I know that the stick-on weights were interfering with the brake caliper (very small wheels). Though I was sure that was fixed when I got them changed to clip-on weights

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars twwtb says:

Repack and reboot would never have fixed that'un. I suppose that could be called galling but there is probably a better name for that type of damage. Had plenty of grease. Something was wrong in the metallurgy would be my guess.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RedRyan says:

lol: "reboot it – like a windows computer – but different"

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cybair says:

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Raucina says:

Bad heat treatment since the grease was still there. But it would have gone a long longer. Beautiful engineering.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Onerom Evad says:

    Yuuuuuup. Nice!!

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Heikki Junnila says:

I've started to wonder why it's always a "Hon-doo"? ๐Ÿ˜€ Just for the heck of it or is there some hatred toward them or..? The only Hon-doo I own is a snow blower (that I kinda love and kinda hate) so don't think I'm butthurt or anything ๐Ÿ™‚ Just curious.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Dawson says:

Strange the balls were not spalled.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Cranium says:

Those ball bearings would make great slingshot ammo

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Lesmerises says:

I had a clicking shaft on a camry. Boot was split so I got my fingers in there and removed some flat washer type pieces that were thinned out and floating around. The clicking stopped… Ran a good while longer before replacement too. Fine if it's your car, not so much on any other.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mykalimba says:

When you say the old part is "going into the trash", I hope what you mean is that it goes into the pile with the rest of the scrap metal that eventually gets recycled.
