Short video showing how to fix the common EGR failure on the 5.7L Hemi pick-ups. This is on a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi. I know we skipped a lot of steps in this video of the diagnosis procedure, but to be perfectly honest every one of these we have encountered with these codes has always been traced back to the EGR valve.

Is that the EGR valve? On my Mustang, that looks exactly like the IAC Idle Air Control Valve

My 05 durango has this code but it doesn have a egr valve

It's hard for me to find videos of a ram from 2005 2007 4.7 L ,there are many of ram with HEMI from 20011 and 20015 but not 2005 or 2006

Code came back after on again installing a new egr. What should I do?

This video helped me fix two codes (P0406 and P1516) that both popped up AND an issue I didn't think was related to the EGR valve that had been occurring for a while now. I spent about a month trying to troubleshoot my engine's RPM dropping down to 1,000 and then going back up to 1,200 – 1,500 RPM while going to at a constant rate of speed between 20-25 MPH. Before the truck finally threw the two mentioned codes, I had already replaced the camshaft and crankshaft sensors, cleaned the throttle body and the air temp sensor. Once I replaced the EGR valve, the Hemi ran nice and smooth again. Haven't had any issues for the last 4 weeks. Thanks for the informative video amigo!

I have replaced the EGR valve four times and the same circuit codes continue to pop up. Can you go a little further and explain the the circuit can continue to fail? This problem has been ongoing for years. It seems almost as if there is a condition in the wires that continue to fail…

Doesn't EGR reduce gas mileage? Isn't it better to leave it off unless you need to pass inspection?

I was having trouble with check engine soon. I recently started watching your videos. Because of your trouble shooting technic I was able to find my problem. It was corroded wires in the wire harness I had to take it apart and repair it. I had several techs look at this they were stumped. Could not clear code.

i have a 1999 durango 5.2L and the egr valve i swear is hiding like a little mouse, but after watching a couple vidoes and forums, i found that lil @#$%er…great vid E.O

Just got a P1404 on my Ram 1500, sadly its a 2012 4.7l so its on the back of the engine and I have to almost drop the engine to clean it.
Edit: it is intermittent, so most likely a bad connetion

This is probably a dumb question but I need to replace the egr valve on my 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7 I assume it's basically the same concept as the 06 hemi ?

Had P0406 on my 3.8 Grand Caravan….., all the wiring looked good. Changed the EGR valve, same type with the stepper motor. Not really sure if this one can be bench tested off the car. So I changed it with a Standard motor products replacement and it took care of the issue for over 10 thousand miles. Took a trip to the FLA keys last week from NY (highly recommended vacation spot) and about 20 hours into my trip as I entered the warmer climate the vehicle now threw a p0404. Based upon my research, these valves have a heat related problem with the internal circuit board. Unfortunately I dont have a Bi directional scan tool (Yet). Is there anyway that you know of that these valves can be tested off the vehicle? Its not the first dud that I have gotten with this kind of valve, but I would like to try and test it. Any input is greatly appreciated! Great videos and great channel!
    Thanks Eric

The first thing I did after I purchased my wife her 2007 Dodge Ram Hemi, was to purchased a Diablo Tuner which also doubles as a Scan Tool. The first thing I learned about Dodge's was that just because a certain code appeared, didn't necessarily mean it was what was actually wrong.

Takes a grand total of 15 minutes to replace the EGR valve on a 5.7 Hemi.

Would like to comment on making more videos with failed Emissions, codes, and incomplete monitors.

is it the EGR valve that makes the throttle valve sooty? or is it the PCV valve or both? thanks…

    good stuff, thanks…

    Dear Santa,
that snap-on scan tool would look nice under my x-mas tree. ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DJDevon3 says:

Old vacuum EGR's you can just push on the diaphragm to check the operation.ย  Now you need a bi-directional scan tool. ๐Ÿ™
