Happenings He Hood man. So uh, this is kind of ridiculous right here. 2023 Ford F300 I'm sorry E 350 deploying the HVAC box out of it, blower motors out, the Uh AC evaporator is out. it's down there, batteries out and I'm trying to get this uh HVAC box assembly out of here and we can see uh right up top, right right back there.

There's one stud going through the firewall. It's not the only one. there was a couple going through there. So so I'm inside of this thing and I got that stud out.

No problem. and there's the one. It's up there somewhere. there's another stud up top I got that one out.

There's that one down there and then there's one. like way back. See that guy right there? That's a problem. See that stud.

It's not just a stud, it's actually. uh. well. there was a nut on it.

but that nut is for, uh, this heater core box right here. and I have to remove the heater core box because there's a nut behind it. so there's two nuts on one stud. things double captured Ford got me, it didn't have to be that hard.

So now I've got to go ahead and pull the uh, the coolant lines off this heater core and get this thing out. So I can get the rest of this box assembly out of here so I can get the other box assembly out of there. We didn't have to double capture that stud guys. We could have done better without.

So let's see if I can get these little clamps loose. we'll just pull this heater core out I I Didn't want to do that I was trying to avoid spilling the coolant. but yeah, you gotta do what you gotta do. come out clamp.

It's a brand new truck. These clamps have never been removed. Oh there's one do that there for now. Yeah, it's a brand new wrecked truck.

Very unfortunate. Can we hear other clamp coming with all the way? Oh man. I could have I Can it's got quick releases? I'm silly. What have I done? Didn't know, Not a Ford guy.

You know what? I'm taking those. uh, taking the hoses off anyway. I'll show you why the quick releases can stay for now. See, this is a this thing's getting some body work and it's going to be here for a while and it's going to move around some so we might need to start the engine later.

Yes, so here. I connected them with a little hose barb connection. so that's one side for the heater hose, the other side for the heater hose. A little connection here.

so now the coolant's not gonna run out of this thing all willy-nilly like. and now I can get those quick connects off and pull that heater core out. It's not a very quick connect if I don't know that it's a quick connect and I Do it wrong. it's kind of hot, still come out, wiggle it some got it? There's one and number two on click.

Yeah, these are. these aren't the best when they're brand new and they're loaded full of dirt. that's when they're a real peach. I can't see what I'm doing got her? She's coming out.

Woohoo! No seriously, that's this is supposed to be a short video and seem to be making like a normular type video on it. So let's just uh. let's encourage this guy to come out of here. Like as soon as I get this car out, then I can I could be done? Yeah, come on, come on you, it's almost out.
What else is there another bolts up there hanging me up? What is this? Do not approve of extra bolts and there is I missed one. Hang on it's it's hiding out I can't see it. but I'm feeling it. Finger on there throwing stuff.

Come here. Extra nut I know you're up there touching you. Oh, there's two of them in close proximity. that's why I missed the the other one.

Okay, going back in. Oh magnet. silly thing. Yep, ratcheting away back there.

there's one more Fastener way way way way way way up there. but I'll get her. Got it that? that's the one. but that's not the one that I wanted when I started.

that's the one that got in the way when I started the one I need is that one which I couldn't get to that one because that nut was captured by this housing right here. Yay here, we'll just pull this guy out. sent you right over here and I dropped this that went hmm I went on one of those I don't know where that went. do I have an extra.

that's weird I'll check on that later. We'll put you right here for right now and the Crown Jewel of the operation again. it's that bolt right there that's the one holding in the entire HVAC assembly vacuum line. disconnect.

Cool. Was that an 11 mil? Sure. Yep. Come on.

Okay, now that's all of them right? Looks like it here we are boxes out. That was like 20 minutes of reverse Tetris but we got it out of there. It had to like turn and move over and then twist and then rotate and then come up and then turn and then twist again and then it came out and there it is all done. Good to go Now the body shop guys can do body shop guy stuff.

See you guys later. Thanks for watching. Have a great day. End of bird see through you foreign.

Could be worse, it could have been a complete bare to firewall job.Over my many years as an Auto Electrician, I have done hundreds of bare to firewall jobs for panel beaters. They learnt the hard way that letting a panel beater pull a dash out and us at my shop having to pull it out and refit them was expensive.

If this was my van I would have cut the stuff and put a nutcert on the firewall with a bolt on reinstall

That doesn't appear to be a very effective firewall at stopping fire with a giant plastic box.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! maurice van doeselaar says:

Can it be that the outer part is metal and the inner is plastic? It is a firewall so I assume on the firewall there must be metal plates screwed on it.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J Bello says:

For decades, most motor vehicles have been engineered for assembly, where added seconds equals hundreds of dollars in labor and delay costs. Fixing stuff, usually years later and out of warranty is not their problem. As aero and safety became goals, there is little room for things like a motor, not alone a heater core. One more reason why electric is the future and the future is now.

I wish I lived in Florida and Ray could’ve done it with my 2010 E350 super duty van not a cutaway it’s a 10 passenger. The head gasket started leaking oil and it’s a 29 hour labor job plus parts and then my timing chains were loose so basically five grand later. It’s just stupid to have to do so much for so little

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars K Magnussen says:

Why can"t they make this modular? It is like the engineers are bored so they make origami cars.

I was a mechanic at a Ford dealer and sometimes I wanted to go Ford's headquarters and kick an engineer's ass for being so moronic. The engineers obviously never ever had to work on the vehicles they designed…….

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 61 Rampy says:

That extra gasket from under the dash was probably the water drain tube gasket, located at the bottom of the plenum. And those hidden studs have been around since the 60's, mostly on GM cars.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lysander Lysandrou says:

As I've said MANY times in the past, engineers should be REQUIRED to HAVE to do every single kind of repair on the vehicles they design BEFORE they get paid.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matthew Holzinger says:

Love that "Gravity." Replace the current "stud" with a double ended stud (threads on both ends) and a washer and thin nut on the outside. to hold the stud for the heater core or box. Then hold the blower box under the hood with a nut on that stud. Optionally a stud with a flange in the middle with the flange on the outside to replace the need for the washer and thin nut.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rusty Robinson says:

    RAY

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Silent Epsilon says:

This double nut job was clearly dictated by the vehicle assembly process. The HVAC box went in first and had to be secured to the firewall with studs. Keeping this particular stud in place required a nut on the inside to secure everything. At a later time, possibly several stations down the line, the heater core box goes on and because it uses the same stud, it would have been possible to push that stud back out of the firewall when pushing in the heater core, had it not been secured with that nut. Furthermore, because the heater core gets attached with nuts on those studs, those studs are not allowed to rotate during tightening of the nuts, otherwise you would need another person on the other side, the engine compartment side, with a tool to hold the bolts in place and keep them from spinning. So there are two reasons why double nutting was necessary with this type of assembly design.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeffrey Evens says:

Well during assembly the engine compartment piece went in first, so it wouldn't fall off the nut was installed. It's not there fault it ever has to be removed. Thanks assembly engineers. Job well done Sir!

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Al Niemann III says:

Had a 2001 Blazer 4.3L with a leaky heater core. The dash was crumbly and I had to save up funds to replace and repair. So, I connected the coolant hoses for several months with garden hose connectors and clamps. Worked great. Until january-ish. Then, it was too cold to not have heat up here in MD any longer. Damn I loved that stupid Blazer. 👍

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Glen Sersted says:

  51. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Milosz says:

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Average Meatsack says:

  53. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dylan lindsay says:

WTH? Ford still makes the E350? I thought that was replaced by the ford transit in like 2015? This blew my mind!

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Beemer says:

This is as bad as replacing a power inverter on a Mack truck. To get it out they could have used weld studs but you half to remove all cabinets to remove the front face of the bed and disconnect the heating vents in the sleeper to replace the power inverter because behind the fancy black cover on the bed is 4 t 25 screws holding it fast. Then you need some one to hold the bed up so you can get your 10 mm socket on it to remove it. Engineer needs a ass kicking

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fixing It Rightish says:

  57. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Karpinski says:

    Holy crap that's evil!

  58. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Churchill says:

Every single Ford I've ever worked on has stupid design details that make them awful to work on. Front lower wishbone bolt on a 2012 Focus with air conditioning? Yeah you're going to need to remove the air conditioning compressor to get that out, or lift the engine. Want to top up brake fluid? Yeah that's a nope because they hid the reservoir underneath the scuttle panel, they do provide a special funnel but… Why?

'06 Volvo XC60 (When Volvo were owned by Ford) – can't take the steering knuckle out without removing the lower wishbone since the ball joint doesn't have enough angle on it to fall out when the bolt is removed. Everything is under spring tension from the suspension so getting it back in is a fight, took 3 hours to get a stupid wishbone installed.

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars A Dot In The Shark says:

That heater core looks relatively easy to get to..unlike others where the whole dash has to come out. And is Ford using the "green stuff" for coolant?

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mr Jeff says:

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Pimpo says:

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Justinian Yi says:

Drove one of these as a U-Haul truck and I was astounded at how inefficiently the drivetrain was packaged. The engine was taking up a lot of interior space and I (being only 5’ 9”) had almost no room for my legs. A Transit van is definitely an improvement for passenger space, but maybe even worse to work on.

He would have to try and make it up by staying late and doing more jobs that paid well.
Glad for Ray, those days Are over.
Now he has to do the jobs of several people, but not enough of it to keep that many people busy.

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars badger jamees says:

Most new cars are garbage, they are all designed to a budget with no quality in mind. Impossible for the backyard mechanic to do simple maintenance on unless you have specialised tools. Then theres the ridiculous amount of money you have to pay for a new car. If i ever came into enough money to buy a new car the only exception would be a toyota as they seem to be the only car manufacturer that still make quality cars that are relatively easy to work on and dont break down all the time.

  73. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jenn D says:
