In this video I bring you along as I have a look at a ladies Jeep Liberty that had this really loud knocking noise when you were coasting with out using the brakes. The noise was really loud and almost sounded like it was coming from the front of the vehicle. Ended up it was coming from the rear.

Liberty here. Got the Big Three. Seven ladies, help me, it's got a horrible knocking noise in it. only when it's moving.

I Guess she says not wearing a title in he says she thinks it's a front drive shaft. so let's go find out. Yeah, if the noise was obvious, he said oh yeah, let's see here here we go. Got an engine light in the entirely not? Yup, the noise is obvious that's off the throttle.

that's on the throttle. Don't noise side to side knock knock. Who's there neutral I Put it in neutral. Noise is still there.

Oh, step on the break. The noise goes away. All right. Very interesting.

What does that mean? What's up? Oops. Let's find reverse in here. Copper and Drive. So if I hold my point on a break slightly here.

Okay, let's put four-wheel drive. Oops. more lock. it's in four-wheel drive.

Noise doesn't change. all right. Let's go see how it's falling apart on this thing. Not sure yet.

foreign, falling right off. Oh I think she might be right though. but driveshaft. Let's see.

no. Okay I thought that was looking like it was sitting a little low in there. Oh yeah, let's be a clunky but I don't know if that's her noise. So there.

Well let's give her a shake down here. so it's kind of weird. Uh, front end is tight and all those ball joints, tie rod ends, brake calipers. everything appears tight for what it is.

The only anomaly I see is is the front and drive shaft up on the CD portion is tore out I ran it on the lift and of course it doesn't make the noise I Put it in a four-wheel drive by the lift. sounds normal, you know nothing. I don't see anything funky. so I guess with all that being said I say we unhook the front drive shaft and take it for a Shakedown and well see if we have any change.

Part about this it doesn't sit well with me is the fact that when you hit the brakes the noise goes away I need a little more uh Razz here. Oh see, they've never been out there. We go now. I don't know.

Should be okay just to leave that hanging just for a quick test drive. I'll drop it and drive. make sure there's no residual spinning here I'll be honest with you I Don't think this is it because even though that boot in here is ripped, there's not a lot of play in it, just all the grease is gone. I Think we can leave it right here I Don't believe the uh chance the case is going to spin that? No.

I Think we'll be okay I got to stick my head out the door and see if that is in the front or in the back I Think it's in the left rear Boy sitting in here it sounds like it's in the left front. There we go. Yeah I thought it sounded like a freaking loose wheel. I Should check the back when it was in.

That's an easy fix. your wheels falling off lady. Well let's see there's any damage to the wheel or the studs. Finally, wheel stuck on it.

must be it wasn't banging around that long. Studs look pretty good. Let's look at the wheel inside of the wheel. Doesn't look too bad either.
It'll beat these things right out. Egg-shaped Uh, this particular wheel or I should say Chrysler aluminum wheels in general. if you're going to have a car come in with a loose wheel 95 percent of the time, it's a Dodge and it's usually an alloy wheel. I Mean it's to the point where we we over torque them in our shop because the spec on them is only like 100 98 something like that.

Usually we go like 120 or 130 because these suckers will always come loose on here. You have to be really careful with these Chrysler aluminum wheels I've probably mentioned that and doesn't know. foreign 95. like I say we usually do 120.

which barely feels tight I Don't know if it's just our climate or what it is, but like I say if one comes in with a loose wheel, you can guarantee it's gonna be one of these. I'm gonna check all the rest of them. Yeah, that one was tight. The rest of these were a little bit off.

Okay, probably find us all the way around at that last test drive. Well, at least it didn't ruin the wheel. You usually running a wheel loose on an alloy. It smokes the center right out of them.

steel wheels. It ruins the wheel and usually eats the lug nuts right apart. Wheel bolt, trailer effects. All right.

That could have been terrible for this lady. Well, that's that folks. Uh, not a hurt fix. Could have been a hundred times worse, but this lady had the wheel left.

her. don't leave me loose wheel, it's a song, right? Um, so yeah, that's a very I'm a noise I Shouldn't say comment, but it's a very characteristic noise of a loose wheel. Usually it changes with side to side. Sway and I I'd like to say I don't know that noise very well, but that's a lie.

Uh, we do get several cars a year that come in with loose Wheels Um, the best case I ever had was on a Chevy truck. The guy took it to another shop. they replaced the entire front differential because of this knocking sound got done with the vehicle, still made a knocking sound. He brought it here I checked it out for him and it was just a loose wheel in the back.

Uh, he was a little bit pissed to say at least because it cost him I Don't know. two thousand some dollars for his front axle assembly and all I had to do was you know at that point I end up replacing this wheel because it was so bad. um however like I say if you own a Chrysler say early 2000s to I don't know whatever year they quit using this style wheel I mean it was on the Caravans the Liberties the Dodge pickups. um very very common that we would see these Wheels come loose and like I said in our shop we always over torque them.

uh and it would be a good practice I'll probably have this lady just sat back, you know put 100 miles on her so let me double check it and that would be the best bet. So anyway the other thing I know it would be the best bet be best bet if you go in that comment section leave me a question. comment the concern the NC the Facebook and let me know your loose wheel story. we probably all have one and just remember viewers I can do it.

    So last weekend I had a 98 Dodge Dakota come in customer had his front brakes done the end of last summer but a family member.
    He was complaining about noise that he felt was coming from the front brakes…. so I took it for a test drive and I'm hearing that exact noise that was in your video and when i applied the brakes noise goes away so I brought it back Jacked it up preparing to inspect the brakes ……when I put the gun to the first lug lug nut moved I was like what the hell? I did noticed one lug was missing and the stud was shiney clean like it had been covered it's while life….. long story short all 4 lugs were loose.
    Tighten all the logs up replace the missing one and all is well.
    So I'm yelling at the TV Eric check the front lug nuts!!!! lol.
    How ironic is that????

    It happened on my 2009 Explorer but i just had a new set of tires put on. First drive after and it shook so bad i thought it was going to come apart. 2 broken studs and 3 loose lug nuts. I wasn't a happy camper.

The First Day I worked I was taught you NEVER test drive a vehicle where a customer complains about Road noise without a full hoist inspection, and wheel inspection. Mechanic who taught this trick said if the mechanic is test driving the vehicle and the suspension breaks or looses steering killing people you are criminally liable for Homicide. PLUS how can you comments 90% of Dodge have wheel loose tire issues BUT then pull a front driveshaft off First without checking for a loose tire. THERE IS NO WAY THAT tire would not have been loose on a shake with weight off the vehicle on the hoist. DON'T even try and say you checked it.

    You endangered people and yourself by test driving that Jeep prior to a proper inspection ?

    Toyota recommends a 5 mile test drive and retorque BY ALL mechanics with aluminium wheels. Customers Do Not need to return at 100 miles. Have you ever seen a NASCAR going 200 MPH come back in for a retorque after a TIRE swap ? On lap 499 of a 500 lap race ?

    I forgot to re-torque my front wheels after doing my brakes, few days later sounded like my wheel bearing on my front driver side was about to go, pulled over to look and saw that i only had 2 lose lug nuts holding my wheel on. Not my brightest moment 😂

    I had a wild ride in the camper in the back of my father '63 Chevy 3/4 ton pick-up when the rear tire came off at 30 mph. He had just had a required inspection done where they removed the wheels to inspect brakes and such. They did not torque the lugs properly. Yep, a safety inspection left the pick-up unsafe. The wheel rolled out backwards and lifted the truck and camper up high then dropped it hard. The wheel went bounding off the road and jumped a 6 foot fence. I was standing up removing chest waders and got tossed like a 12 year old rag doll.

    Changing wheels from summer to winter and vice versa is my personal nightmare. Nothing happened to me so far, but from heaving the car up on those dinky hevers to torque the wheels correctly. Before that, it´s true that car services overtorque it, often so much that I had problems to loosen the lugnuts.

    Those early 2000s Dodge/Jeap and mid-2000s BMWs had the softest factory aluminum, you just cross some railroad tracks or touch a baby pothole, and she's a gone'r. The BMWs not as bad as the Dodge/Jeep for loosening lugs as the BMWs are hub centric and seemed to still be spot on after a 100 and then 500 mile retorque, not those damn Chryslers though.

    Eric, I had new tires installed at a cheapo muffler & brake shop in Buffalo. I pulled out after it was done, drove about a block, got a terrible wobbly vibration. Pulled over, and 2 wheels had loose and missing lug nuts! Had to walk back and get the mechanic, who was very angry. He had also held me up for 2 hours trying to remove my factory glued-on plastic G6 GT wheel covers! I have also had wheels over-torqued to something like 300 foot pounds, at least. You just never know what you're going to get, these days. I always check my car over after it's been to a garage, for NYS Motor Vehicle Inspection.

    Best related story I have is that I used to work for a rural Ford dealership where we had a small independent shop directly across the road from us. A customer pulled in to have a "rattle when driving" complaint looked at, but didn't want to pay our diagnostic fee (It was not a Ford product). They ended up across the street to have the work done, and about 30 minutes later, we saw their tow truck head down the road… I happen to be going on a test drive at the time, and ended up following the tow truck. Approximately 2 miles down the road, there sat the guy, on the trunk lid of his car, minus his right rear wheel… He had them tow the car to us, as they apparently said that he needed shocks and a front left tie rod… which he didn't need at all, but he did end up needing a new wheel in the right rear, new rotor, brake assembly, strut, and lower control arm (independent rear suspension) which were all damaged when the wheel fell off doing 60 down the road!
    Made for a very interesting day!

    I wonder if the lug nuts themselves contribute to the issue. My 2005 Dodge Magnum used what appeared to be steel lug nuts covered by a soft metal cap for appearance. I found this out after several years when I started having trouble fitting the lug wrench over the lug nuts and was having inconsistent torquing. Several of these "beauty" caps were loose and a couple of them even came off. I replaced them all with chrome-plated aftermarket lug nuts and had no further issues. I'm sure a lot of Chrysler products used that type of lug nut.

    Eric I can only assume the reason you guys deal with so many loose wheels is because of your climate, the corrosion builds up on those wheels and hubs and if a inexperienced tech is tightening the wheels down they may not realize that the corrosion has the wheel cocked uneven when they torque it down

    Had a MGA roadster that I was driving on PA Turnpike and stopped for gas and as I was driving in parking lot heard something rattle in hub cap. Pulled the cap off and part of one of the 4 studs was broken off. Drove slowly to my destination with 3 studs and replaced the broken one.

    There was one time I was following a family and they lost a rear tire right in front of me. Another time traveling down interstate a pickup going the opposite direction lost the left front tire. It rolled through the medium, hit my rear tire, and then flopped down on the center line.

    My brother had a TPMS replaced by a chain owned tire center. Within a week he was driving on a country two lane road with no shoulder. It was almost dark driving about 50mph. The right front wheel came off and went over the guard rail. He managed to get pulled in a driveway. He’s 84 years old and tried to call me but he had no cell service. He dialed 911 and they dispatched a tow truck. He had it taken to a local tire shop. Three of the studs were broken off and no lug nuts on the remaining two. The shop got it back on the road. I went with him to the original store that replaced the TPMS and they had him to get an estimate for the body damage. The total repair was $3200. They sent him a check for the complete repair.

    Got new tires on my truck. Towed our travel trailer from our house in Galway to your neck of the woods. All the way there and back I'm thinking damn it's windy the trailer is really moving around. No noises and everything looked fine. 2 weeks later with a backhoe on a trailer and UTV in the bed the left rear passed me on 88. Wheel never made a sound.

    I have a 2005 wrangler unlimited and after a tire rotation by the Dealer I lost over half of the lug nuts on my trip all highway. Had to get all new nuts didn't go back to that Dealer. As one front wheel only had One nut left

    Took a work vehicle into Jippy Boobs once for tire rotation. They broke off 2 lug bolts. They replaced bolts and got on my way. Good thing I checked torque right away. Spec is 90 lb-ft and I got a good 3/4 rotation before I got the click for 3 lug nuts on one wheel. Those guys sometimes are just warm bodies only.

    1989 Jeep Cherokee – hour long drive, stopped on side of highway a couple of times because it was driving wonky, like it was super windy. Had no idea what was wrong. Got onto my off-ramp and one massive clunk/bang from the RR. Wheel had come off in this exact way – loose lug nuts let the wheel wobble like crazy. Destroyed the alloy wheel exactly as described, broke 3 of the 5 studs. Lucky it didn’t leave me at highway speed.

    Do the Fiat/Chrysler products have poor fitting lugs vs wheels? I can say for my F150 most of the aftermarket wheels have a different sized/shaped lug hole than Ford wheels. You need different lug nuts depending on the wheel to make sure they hold well.

    Had a similar issue with a GMC after a dealer service though not so lucky. Headed down the road a few days after an oil change and tire rotation and heard a similar noise that got real bad real fast. By the time I got pulled over to the side of the road the driver rear wheel was all cattywampus, no lug nuts to be found. Had it towed to the dealer and it had destroyed the wheel and ruined some studs. Thankfully the dealer went good for a refurbished wheel, new studs and inspected the drum brake. I am now fanatical about that wheel re-torque 😉

    I had a lose wheel come in a week or two ago, it was on a 2018 peaterbilt, dude swerved into one of those concreat bariors to avoid a passenger car, ended up worrlering out the rim, janking up the studs so much the hub had to get replaced, and bending the cross tube. I was barely able to get the old rim off it was so bad. Was not a happy driver that day, but at least he got it into the shop and didn't have to find out all this on the side of the road.

    I changed the front brake pads on my girlfriends car years ago and only lightly tightened the lugs before I put down the jack and forgot to tighten them…. the driver side wheel flew off a day later… thank god she was only doing 30 MPH at the time.

    Trivia: Chrysler first offered cast alloy wheels in model year 1969. Lugs would not retain torque, all were recalled and replaced with steel, luckily, this was fall of 1968, some cars were at dealers but few were sold. Engineering was so freaked out that no aluminum wheels were offered until well into the 70s, and those were FORGED aluminum. Castings did not reappear until the 80s (the FWD era).

    I used to drive an 87 Dodge Charger which was a 2 door sport coupe version of the Dodge Omni which had that same loose lugnut problem. The lugnuts on the car were steel with an aluminum ornamental cap that always stripped causing improper torques. I eventually replaced all the lugnuts with all steel ones, and i did the same with my Dodge Dakota after smashing the wheel to get one lugnut loose. For the Dakota i bought used lugnuts at a garage sale lol.

    I've got a Pro Master in the shop now with same complaint and similar costumer "repair opinions". Owner drove from Maine to East Idaho with this noise. Steel wheel in this case and the centering holes were ovalled out. One 16.5 x 1.5 mm lug stud seized and broke in the hub-did my best but couldn't get it out cleanly so had to replace the hub and bearing.

    My (shameful) story was to figure out a clunking noise from the front tire on 2010 Camry.
    I did all the checks … sway bar links, balljoints, control arms, nothing. I gave up and after long period of despair, I discovered by chance the bolts on the guide pins on one front brake were loose with one bolt already missing. I must have forgotten to tighten the bolts after replacing the brakes. I don't know why I never checked the easy parts and instead went for the difficult components!
    Lessons learned.

    I had the opposite problem. I had a "mechanic " install the lug nuts too tight which later snapped the studs which made the wheel fall off and roll down a hill. Thank god it didn't hit anybody.

    Hi Eric. Many years ago, I was working in a shop and the boss brought his wife's car in for a brake job. He worked on one side and I worked on the other. We finished the brakes and he took the car for a test ride. About 10 minutes later, he comes walking back, carrying a wheel/tire. Apparently, he thought I tightened the lug nuts and I thought he tightened them but at least 2 wheels were not tight. Fortunately no one was injured and the car wasn't damaged.

    I forget what I did to my old '93 3/4-ton Suburban, I think front rotors, but you know how you get an old lug nut and a stack of washers and drive in the lugs? Looked tight, so immediately took it on a road trip (from Southern California to Northern California). First bathroom stop, luckily I checked. No big deal, but basically slow-mo torqued those things down into the hub one pit stop at a time.

Picked up some new wheels & tires (Some used heavy oem aluminum because winter potholes are unforgiving and invisible) popped them on, torqued to spec. Drove about 20km, suddenly heard and felt something weird, pulled over and the lug nuts were almost all finger tight. My only guess is that it was some combination to do with the mating surfaces & corrosion on the lugs & hub as well as the metal contracting going from a heated parking space of +20 to -40. Gave everything a really good wire brushing and they've held at the torque rating since.

    Do you remember when Mopar vehicles had left hand thread for left wheel lug nuts? When I worked for the City of Los Angeles as an equipment mechanic, a Dodge truck came in complaining of the wheesl coming lose repeteadly in the front axle. I found that the brake shop had switched the right drum with the left drum, so that the left wheel had right hand threads and the right wheel left hand treads. Switched the drums around and the problem dissapeared.

    Discount tire Had a bad day with a new set of Wheels on my truck I found it. Showed the Assistant Manager just some thread marks in the wheel only drove it for about 30 miles the fallowing Monday I received a call from the manager( I live 70 miles from every where) and the manger shipped me a new wheel Came the next day and I had a local shop put it on for me I now have a matching Spare. Very Good service from Discount Tire. And an Interesting Noise at Stop signs. Only one lug nut tight on a right rear 1977 Gmc Pick up ( Panel Truck Custom build)

    My story: 2002 grand Vitera: rear drums were worked on (don't get started about the stripped-out ports to push out the drums). After driving about a mile from the house the vehicle felt like I was driving a boat in a storm while drunk. Pulled off so see that the wheel had 2 lugs left and the wheel almost completely off. I THINK it was because I didn't seat the drum right not allowing for enough threads for the lugs…dunno how i manged that… It would have been fun if I didn't stop as I was .01miles from getting on the highway. Definitely the strangest vehicle related thing other than the hood latch failing on the same vehicle going down the highway.

    Also reminded me of the zip ties on driveshaft prank I did a few times

    I fortunately and unfortunately had that happen to my wifes equinox after I rotated her tires. I was rushing and only had one of her tires on hand tight and she drove to work and halfway into work (thankfully no thruway driving!) the car began to shake bad and she got into her parking lot and I went to her work and found that I didn't tighten the lugs on her one tire. No damage thankfully but it happened and I feel like an idiot for it.

    I was watching investigations after near disasters and deadly plane crashes. In almost every case it was an oversight, poor repair, wrong part, mistake in fueling, bad training, incomplete procedures, lack of awareness, lack of communication. There the consequences are a few hundred lives. I routinely find large corporations on the Internet, one mistake by a programmer or person will cost millions of hours of lost customer time. Because no one goes and looks. They never monitor lost user time, they never apologize and often let it go on indefinitely if no one notices or complains. Often there is no way to complain.

    I find websites where whole sections are not working – because the people who build it are not required to test it the same way the customers and users have to use it. It is almost to the point, the exception is something that works. I found companies who write software, they serve a specialized market, yet the programmers are not required to know what the customer does and how they use the software. Not sure why I am telling you this. It is on my mind a lot this last year. People, groups, corporations, even countries get away with not doing a good job, not checking, not listening when people complain, not listening when people report something unusual. If she had not listened and checked, would her wheel actually fall off?

    When I was just starting out, with young kids, I could not afford a car, so I bought an old one, to get by. One day my wife was driving with two kids in baby seats. The right front suspension broke, the car crashed down and dug a grove in the pavement. She was going slow luckily preparing to turn. I don't want to thinks of what could happen.

    Our world sometimes seems rather fragile. I look at those diagrams and checklists and reports. I see the many different ways those cars and trucks are made, models changing constantly, parts getting ever more expensive. You made a comment in one of these videos something like "wait until all those electrics…". They get 50-60,000 miles and have to replace those batteries.

    There is no way to hold anyone accountable. We fix things after they break. We find that procedures and processes are bad after thousands or millions have been affected, and usually only where a life is lost or clear incompetence discovered. And seldom even then. I was hearing someone complain about a country, and they were OK with letting millions of people go jobless. Letting them do nothing. Responsibility, caring for others, because it is the right thing to do. Designing for true lifetime use, ease of repair, low cost and sustainable methods. I see many of the right things to do, but no way to encourage proper behavior, when too many just do the minimum.

She asked me to go with her to Goodyear picked some out and had them put on these were universal so they had the elongated stud hole.     I actually have a good story, 5 months after I bought my 89 ranger I was doing brake work on the back and I was being rushed by the girlfriend at the time to go to eat so I forgot to tighten up the driver back wheel so we made it to the drive up and I’m coming around the corner, tire falls off, lost all the lug nuts in the bushes, didn’t have a jack, found a couple guys to help me put the tire back on. Learned my lesson that day.

    Have had that problem with aluminum wheels on several cars. We have to change the tires every six months and put on studded tires. When I put the aluminum rims on I retorc them a day or two later and often find they have loosened in the day since they were put on. The problem is if one over tightens them then it's a bitch to get the nut loose later.

    Hey Mr. O, you are one of the best. I have a Dodge Caravan with those alloy wheels. Took it to our local mechanic for brakes. When he put the wheels back on he tightened the lugs so tight that I broke my breaker bar trying to get them off. How tight is too tight. Keep in mind that I don't ever want to sing the loose wheel song!

    I’ve got an 09 dodge journey 3 years ago I had Walmart put on winter tires I found on clearance at the store 50 bucks a tire for 225 55 19s 2 days later the wheel sounded like it was going to fall off I re-torqued them all got about half to 3/4 of a turn on every lug nut scary stuff

    OK, I'm old. If they hadn't done away with the left-hand lug nuts, maybe this wouldn't be a problem. As the wheel rolled and acted on the lug nut, it would turn it in the correct direction to tighten it. I think the old International trucks were the same way. By the same token, many a lug nut and stud were ruined as they were turned the wrong way for removal. I suppose many more were ruined than the number coming loose.
