Some of us have just worked on our own cars and motorcycles for 50 years and don't have the benefit of a $10,000 diagnostic computer or a few grand to pay a mechanic. We do what we can. And speaking for myself, I've managed to keep everything of mine running with an OBDC 2 reader (or a paper clip), Google, a multimeter and some hand tools. When my late model car bites the dust, I'm sticking to my 94 Harley with an Evo motor. New cars are shit.

100% behind you Ray – you do it the way you gotta do it. Your way is the safe way, for you and the customer.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sovereign-WV Citizen says:

Your company should refuse customer parts and working without diagnosis. In my trade of HVAC customers are almost always wrong. Saves time to ignore them. Your trade is 3x worse I bet.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Angel Delcourt says:

If Google said so, it must be right. Google is AES certified.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phantom says:

If theres no oil pressure, you should not be driving it at all; poor main/connecting rod bearings

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars STEVEN M says:

I didnt take off the intake
I used swivel extensions and my hands as eyes to get the bolt i was done in 20 minutes

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Wilson says:

I would have installed an aftermarket oil gage, way lot simple, and cheaper

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars drjoeset says:

The first mistake is Never buying electrical parts from Carquest or Advance auto parts. they have cost me nightmares with bad new parts….

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Heartsill says:

Working on stuff like that how many times a day do you say something like, piece of crap? They could do better than that. I still prefer a 1964 something.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars George Martin says:

Is that an OSHA approved stepstool?

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bruce Woods says:

    Dear ole Dr Google šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Billy S. says:

Ok i gotta chime in on this one. That sender can easily be replaced without removing the intake. Ive changed several incuding the screen as well without removing any of that. Takes about 30 minutes. Job still pays the alotted time per the books. By the time you finish intake disassembly, id be on to the next vehicle.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ladson Geddings says:

There are front counter people there that direct your work; perhaps they should establish a policy requiring a shop technical agreement with outside problem resolutions before attempting the repair. That would help keep customers from paying for mistakes. Part of any repair business is paying for the technician's experiences and knowledge.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Volodymyr Buchak says:

I just love the GM engineering. From a 100s of places that you can install a sending unit, this has to be one. Morons.
To replace a sensor in common place would take less then 10 min,but this will turn in to a $500 bill just a labor time. Genius.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Game Of Morphs says:

Work smarter not harder, just because the book says it should take 2+ hours doesn't mean you have to take that long. i work on boats, half the shits by feel and or im upside down lol

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Johnny yuma says:

    No new intake gasket/o rings?

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Johnny yuma says:

And that crappy music needs to go. Quiet is a good thing.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Johnny yuma says:

Another stupid ass design from engineers that have never worked on anything…EVER!

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rich Halsy says:

When I did my 07 4.8l I looked quite a while to find out if I needed the screen filter. From what I can tell the screen filters are only in the 5.3l and the 5.7l. I didnā€™t pull the intake but as much as a pain in the butt is was, I should have.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars music and more63 says:

Is anyone else going going do do do do do when you hear the phone or is it just me

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars garth baublitz says:

Crazy how some shops do more then they have to and charge all that money just to change sending unit.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mwolovi says:

At least wash your car, clean your interior and pressure wash your engine, and the techs will you as a prince/princess.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Randall Burke says:

    How much is diagnosis, $200-$300?

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David says:

As another commentor commented, the oil pressure gauge was working and the engine light was off on the way out of the shop.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J Om says:

Just to be the barer of bad or good news honestly the intake manifold does not have to be removed to access the oil sending unit and this is coming from a chevy silverado owner

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tommy Ankrom says:

Codes have to be cleared for guage to operate

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Simpson says:

What's that annoying noise in the back ground?

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dylan Finch says:

No need for intake manifold gasket though?

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars brian watkins says:

well OIL be stumped, what now Rainman Ray it's time for the magic plugin electron investigator I think, you are 100% correct in what you say you must look after your self take care good buddy from the UK

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars VJification says:

It might have already been mentioned, but you removed what looks like foam from under the front of the intake. I didn't see you reinstall it when you put the intake bake on so does it have to go bake on?

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stevo says:

So when did rap take over from classic rock in the garage? Thumbs down.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeremy Sutherland says:

This guy is making a mistake with his money…..pay the shop for the diagnosis after you pull the parts cannon out and fail if you do your own work that is

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars swthero says:

Took me 2 hours, a long wobbly extension, a special socket, and a lot of cuts on my hand to reach back there but it got done.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Thompson says:

Car crap partšŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ If this was my vehicle l would spend the extra money on genuine parts

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars H says:

Clear the engine codes after replacing the sensor and youā€™ll see the oil pressure gauge will start working šŸ˜‰

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg Cowart says:

I change my oil sending unit on my 08 GMC sierra 5.3 never took the intake off thatā€™s just a waste of time man

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Michaud says:

As a Certified GM Technician I can assure you that you don't have to pull the intake.
Use a pick to pull up the assurance tab on the connector and disconnect.
Put your oil pressure switch socket on an extension and universal and remove.
Don't forget to change the filter screen under the switch before installing the new switch.
Less than an hour to change, and if you're flat rate you just made good coin on that job.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GOAski says:

    Google knows – Rainman don't šŸ¤£

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Oldschool Dude says:

These can be replaced without pulling the intake. Just the mirror of a sideview placed againt the firewall works well in navigation.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rainman Ray's Repairs says:

Ok so after a couple day of Reeeeeeee comments Iā€™ll chime in. For starters, the customer said that the gauge intermittently works then quits. No! I wonā€™t do this job without pulling the intake. Iā€™m not risking straining or cutting my hands up, so I can charge 25% of the book time to do the work. I have to take care of my hands, they feed my family. If I strain a metacarpal or get cut I canā€™t earn. I didnā€™t decide to circumvent the process to ā€œpay lessā€ for a repair because google said so. I donā€™t own that. Others peopleā€™s decisions are not my problem.
