The cooling passages on that poor motor reminded me of those that I encountered on my '41 Ford (n tractor last year. It stsrted as an oil pump rebuild, then I noticed that there was a bunch of gunk in the passages surrounding the cylinders. I stuffed greased rags in the cylinders and powerwashed and dug out endless quantities of what must have been radiator stop-leak. I had to use bore brushes and lots of elbow grease to clean it. It's 82 and runs great.

I have to say I fully expected the coolant that came out. I didn't expect the sludge, but after a bit I realized that I should have.
That engine had obviously been running on plain water for quite a while, and that is often (these days, at least) a sign that the coolant is leaking out. And it may have just been the lighting, but when you were cleaning out that lifter cavity, I was thinking "the sides of this thing sure look like rust under the oil". That would probably only happen if it was circulating water to build up rust. And of course a lot of that rust would have washed into the pan and formed a layer of sludge.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Bowsher says:

Would it have made sense to remove the oil pan and clean it out manually?

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dustin Taylor says:

I had a 2000 jimmy with 240k on the clock when I finally sold it and they are almost unkillable. I abused the crap out of it, bought it with 180k on the clock for a winter beater and it just took all the beading. The only thing I maintained was the brakes, shocks and engine oil, everything else was left to suffer, to fix it properly would have cost 2x what it was worth so I had to draw a line somewhere.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jose Martinez says:

    Bring it back to liiiiffffeeee!!!

I still have the occasional guy that states that he only puts water in his radiator and the car runs fine.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bowhunters says:

Where is the Rotor Rooter man when you need him? How can someone let an engine get like that? If that engine was an animal the govt would get the owner for animal abuse. LOL Some people just add oil and never change it, never flush the radiator, etc.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Benson says:

    Insane filth in that engine

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars D S says:

I had a girl friend who had a ford Escort and she bought it new and she said she nevered had the oil changed so I told her I would do it . When I opened the drain the oil came out grease. Had to flush the motor and the oil filter was clogged up tight. I could not believe it did not blow up with 71,000 miles on it.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars CCdude says:

Please people take the auto to someone like Rainman and or any mechanic, have the car checked out before you buy, if you don't know squat about cars! The old mechanic's trick on a 5 quart pan is to dump the oil after repairs, get some cheap oil and replace 1 qt with trans fluid. If it runs drive for 500 miles and dump it. You might have to do it twice on a engine with this much sludge. The trans fluid has the best cleaners in it

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars CCdude says:

    clean one owner…………………….

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars arty Berkhoff says:

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mr. Payne says:

Really sad how people act on the internet. They don't have the ballz to act like that in person.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Clifton Carmichael says:

My biggest complaint to you is that the oil pan should have come off for cleaning it and the pickup screen. I bet before long it will be back with a stopped up screen or a blown engine. Sorry.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jon Clark says:

    That’s a 350 with two cylinders missing.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Beaver C says:

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Yurindeep says:

It looks like someone upper-decked the radiator…but there was no mention of smell
Could it have been creek water? Maybe they over heated on the road and used ditch water to fill the rad.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars chris 889 says:

    That’s seriously minging ! 🤢🤢

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jimmy Taylor says:
