Kinda wondering why you change gaskets on everything you remove but the intake in this case.
Also the hoses where undamaged but you replaced them anyway ?
I guess Ford only sell bulk parts to make more money like everyone else. What would you receive if you only wanted to change the thermostat ?

Had that engine in my Ford Sport Trac….even trying to replace the PVC valve was near impossible. Terrible design of hoses on top of hoses, etc.
What was wrong with the old hoses? Not your money I guess, just replace everything?
The 3 litter was a little easier to work on the top end but the 4 liter has its own issues. The plastic water components just make me laugh. Some replacement items are made of metal!
I wonder how hard it would be to make a car so that anything could be replaced without removing anything else.

Haha, I have a ranger with the 4.0 SOHC engine and I knew what part was going to be leaking as soon as I saw the title 😀
One thermostat, $10.00. Have to template whole assembly instead. Have to dissamble one quarter of the engine for thermostat. Instant death to swine engineers who don't have to repair these vehicles.

This is the kinda of crazy design that whispers in an owners ear, “you don’t need to change that thermostat until it fails”. Not built to benefit the customer.

I would have recommended a metal/all aluminum replacement. Those plastic housings are junk.
Oh my God the way they make motors today everything so compact crazy that you just had to disassemble all that over a thermostat.

That’s one of the 4 liters I always dreaded fixing, the inline was even worse.
I wonder if that 4.0 has the timing chain in the back of the motor. They were not Notorious for that.

You had like 4 hose clamps. You didn't use your hose clamp pliers once.
I can't believe that Ford repair manuals (or online repair help) don't say what you need to remove to get access to swap-out and put in a new part. That sems to be needed with compactness of current engine compartments. I seem to remember that the old Chilton manuals provided step-by-step procedures to access major components.. Hard to believe that removing an intake manifold would be necessary to swap out an engine thermostat housing.
This just reminded me of my car. Had been wondering why the coolant reservoir was going empty and the radiator was low. Found out the reservoir spout where the hose to the radiator has a hole in it.
So can you no longer just change the thermostat and fit a new gasket!!!! A whole plastic body change instead and the old one goes to landfill, Ray does it not drive you mad our poor planet!!!
Um surface tension is what happens at the surface of water due to hydrogen bonding. What your talking about there is friction, thanks though

There are aftermarket metal thermostat housings that you can buy for those crappy plastic ones. Bought one for a 2005 Ford Mustang with V6 engine.
Those 4.0 SOHC thermostat housings are a known high failure item. I replaced one for a friend of mine on a Mustang with the same engine, Fortunately that installation did not require messing with the intake system so it was a lot easier to do. I did the work in my friends parking lot and I managed to bring enough tools with me to get it done in one trip!

I noticed that many intakes you've removed or partially remove, you do not replace the intake gaskets. Are many of these reusable?

Replace it with an aluminum aftermarket housing. Seams don't leak.
That plastic replacement will leak again. Probably the most common thing to go wrong with these 4.0's but there are cast replacements opposed to plastic that hold up better now for these motors.
Plastic thermostat housing is ford junk.
Could you have found a cheaper cordless electric drill to buy? Was this from the dollar store?

This is why I only drive Toyota/Lexus. Ford's are the biggest pieces of sh_t – they use more plastic then BMW.

I had faith once you started to pull the coolant line you'd get it to come out w/o pulling the intake. Alas, had to come out anyway…
