My Scion XB had the same problem. I used a 7/8 6 point socket (22mm). not good on the nut, but you're changing it anyway

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars matt odom says:

there is a regular lug nut under all that cheap chrome. We had problems those those lug nuts when I worked at a chrysler dealership over 10 years ago. Ew would order them in almost gallon sized bags and just keep them in our tool boxes instead of having to go to parts every time because it was such a problem.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars I NOAH MANN says:

I didn't know 21.5mm sockets existed. I've always used a 22mm and if it rounded, I rip the cap off and use a 20mm. I'm gonna order a 21.5, I think it'll save me some time.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Homen says:

My Chevy Sonic had the same kind of caps on the nuts. They flew off. Thats how I found out.
    I replaced them.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bruce Storey says:

Dodges just seem to rust everywhere. I think Dodge thought people would forget about the rust when they changed the name to ram — lipstick on a pig!

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Blatherskite says:

    Swollen nuts – not fun!

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jim Dreger says:

It's not just a Dodge problem. My Ford F-150 had the same problem.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars A Nthony Ciampaglia says:

    It’s a ford problem too

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars blumobean says:

I hate beauty caps. My grandson bought a 2004 Jaguar XJR, beautiful car, in great shape. Was removing wheels to put new tires on. He used a 12 point socket on the chrome caps and they spun on the nuts. Thank the Lord we were able to get the cap off and then a 19mm 6 point took the nut off. Get rid of these caps and locking lug on any car you own.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Colin Vincent says:

I had the same problem on my ford went to a automotive parts store they thought I was some kind of nutter.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Herberg says:

As Archer would say: "Thanks Dodge".

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars White Trash Bandit270 says:

when I was at Swope …ALL THE SWOLLEN LUG NUTS!!!! it was horrible

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bad Moon Rising says:

OOOH man I despise those. I had them on my focus and on my ladies grand cherokee . I replaced them all on the focus with solid steel ones , but not before I had to torch off one which messed up the magnesium wheel a little. So it isn't just dodge

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars pax nune says:

Dodge nnononono it has been FIAT for years

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brandon says:

Thanks for this video. I replaced a battery in a Dodge Journey for a family friend today. I had to remove the tire to access the battery 😒. One of the lug nuts was swollen. I was able to slide the socket halfway onto the nut and remove it. If not for this video, I would have probably put it back when I finished. I’m just a DIY guy. Instead, I pulled one from my car and used it (same threads and size). I already ordered a new one for my car, so no worries.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars I spilled my coffee on the floor says:

man, its hard to have swollen nuts.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bob bob says:

Banging sideways on the the stud like that is not good either. You should set socket over open jaws on a vice and smack nut out with a pin punch and hammer.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hoss says:

My Ford Escape has the same problem

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars smadas4192 says:

Cause many don't and ir are not honest!

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Holbrook says:

    I assume 7/8 would be close I believe it's a little bigger than 22mm

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Keith Brass says:

My ford escape has the same nuts so….

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Honklerton says:

The rotor didn't look that bad actually – could have kept the original actually. That and 2mm isn't "almost metal to metal" – I've seen pads only .5mm left – now THAT was close to metal on metal, and EVEN then the rotors still looked fine – thankfully the pads wore evenly on that case though – otherwise it would have been metal on metal LOL.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rick Settle says:

Same lug nut problem on Fords. Just replaced 24 lug nuts @ $9.00 each.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars StormTrouper3 says:

I had the same problem with a Ford Mondeo ST, but always wondered what was causing it.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MrEditor says:

    Swollen Truck Nuts? Ouch…

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TFSFireman says:

I own a 2007 Dodge Magnum. I had the same issue. Replaced the wheel nuts with solid nuts in 2012. I believe every Dodge vehicle with these nuts, should have had them replaced with solid nuts, by a Recall.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars HannibalGraham says:

    Nobody likes swollen nuts.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sean Lacroix says:

The same thing happened with my Toyota Matrix nuts. It was such a pain in the ass getting them off. Luckily I got a whole new set without the stupid caps for like 40 bucks.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars norwegiangadgetman says:

    Isn't that socket through-hole?
Just power the nut off the stud, then free it from the socket with a suitable metal rod and your trusty hammer.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheFrankman711 says:

I don't think they swell because of rust underneath. My Ford had swollen lug nuts and there is No rust (california and garaged) at all anywhere on this car. I believe they swell from using the high impact gun on them too much. Most shops don't care about the recommended torque or using a torque wrench. I had to replace mine too.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars emoAnarchist says:

used to work for AAA as a roadside tech, basically anything that doesn't require a tow. meaning i did the majority of flat tire calls…
these things were the bane of my existence for those years.. got to the point where my boss told me if i saw these, call it in as a tow.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ct Bignell says:

Have done just that on more than one occasion, in Southern California! It's just a lack of maintenance problem to deal with as it comes

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars slightlyevolved says:

This is why, even though the tires haven't been off except for a rotation, I replaced my lugnuts on a 3yr old car with solid ones before they had a chance to do this. They are spline type, but I keep the key in the glovebox and let the techs know.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike H says:

"Swollen Nuts" are ALWAYS a bad thing!!

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim Campbell says:

That Rotor is good for another 50,000 miles

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars david l says:

    That’s just standard anti theft

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robin Fleet says:

New nuts will make roadside tire changes far more fun…at least less curse filled. Customer may appreciate that and feel the money was well spent. Nothing like saving a few bucks only to find yourself f*cked later.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ken Bauer says:

I've always been told that the 0.5mm intervals are for the chrome caps that break off, leaving a 21.5mm nut that was under the 22mm cap. Never thought to use em like this before, but I've also never encountered this problem.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Conner Davis says:

Ford has this too. Although fords problem is way worse because the caps actually do strip and flare out

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lina Scott says:

I will be honest an say the swollen nut sounds like a cheap excuse but watching the video is great as its visual proof.
    Thank you for explaining 😊

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Russell Houghton says:

Toyota is just as bad. I have a jar of good lug nuts in oil that I have to get one or two out of everytime I change my wheels.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ed Tharpe says:

Old parts guy here, my daughter's 2013 Dodge Dart has the same style, but with bolts. Before I had two tires put on the rear, I could get my 19mm chrome socket on the rears easily. After the car came home 9 of the 10 rears, I could not. I believe some shops are using worn out sockets and beating up the stainless nut covers.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ZXTrucker says:

Just dealt with this lug nut issue on my '06 Ram few weeks ago. Made the call to replace them. Had I known the cause and commonality of this issue, I would've made this one of the first repairs when I bought the truck.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jason Dow says:

7/8” will help with that issue as well

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jznomoney says:

I have a 2014 ford escape that had swollen nuts. I replaced them.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Darktemplar1305 says:

Tha F? thanks for showing me what happend to my GF's Focus Wheelnuts i wondered why the 22 didn't fit and the 23 felt like way too big .

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Abbott says:

Ford apparently has the same issue with lug nuts. I’ve asked the dealer why this happens and they can’t give me an answer. Thanks for your insight on this!

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars BigDave8802008 says:

And, it isnt just dodge that has this issue! All manufacturers use the somewhere and they are all garbage!

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Drift Pirate says:

I remember when the chrysler lugnuts were out of stock even at the dealer. My service writer didnt want to break the bad news to a customer but it turns out she kept a full set in her glove box. How are those lug nuts not a recall?

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MetsJ1224 says:

Swollen nuts and a little G'n'R outro. I love what you're doing my man!
