  1. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Sorenson says:

They did bot swell up. Some technician set the gun at 150 lbs and caused the edges to bend making them too tight for the socket. Hammering the socket on removes them easily. Seen this a lot.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! Ax89 says:

In my opinion, swollen lug nuts is a long term problem with Ford — definitely poor design. I have a 2009 Escape which had that exact same problem.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nothing much. says:

A 19.5mm socket is a good job for these 👍

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JustLiberty says:

Continuing to use those two-part lug nuts is insane. Among other things, they render the spare tire, jack, and lug wrench useless.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ezequiel cordero says:

Still should get paid better 🤔

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ezequiel cordero says:

Matrix at its best 👌 👍 nice catch, tires might be way of shop pulling in customer with good deals to offer when working on tire change or flats.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fosuya says:

    Deez nuts were swollen 🤣

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rockaho says:

I just replaced all the lug nuts on my Ford Escape. I went with Mguard 64012. It was a toss up between them and the Dorman Ray used. I felt the quality of the Mcgards was a bit better. You will need 5 packs (4 each) to replace the entire car. The Mcgards are top notch. No more swollen lug nuts.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Toni-420 says:

honestly i think this is a design issue i think i remember this being a major issue on my families former 2002 ford taurus and our 2016 ford fusion. havent had it on our 2018 yet thankfully but maybe someday?

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marty Jansing says:

Looks as though Ford is still running with Henry's business model. Several years after Ford started mass producing car,. and salvage yards started to open. Folks could go to the yards and buy parts off of wrecked or disabled cars. Henry sent a crew out to the yards and examine the cars. They were looking for any reusable parts. If it looked like it could be reused Henry found a way to try and make it so parts could not be reused. He wanted to sell new cars. So, he designed parts to fail with in several years of operation. The two part lug nuts were designed to FAIL.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rashodeen Yassim says:

It's has been manufactured like that on purpose, so they can keep on selling millions of those lug nuts.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars halleffect1 says:

those things are such a pain. it's time consuming but you can cut the caps off and use an 18.5 socket from that point on.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jcka says:

i work at a tire shop and the joke is any time a ford comes in we’ll say lug nuts on whatever service bay it’s in

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Bland says:

I have a 2013 Ford C-Max Energi, and I recall having all my lug nuts replaced a few years ago. Unlike the owner, I almost always go with the technician’s recommendations if I trust the shop.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars thewild bun says:

"its a ford thing" every company has done this even gotten to lawsuits because of this do you do anything to look up what you say?

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steven Thornton says:

I've got a jaguar xjr575 svr when I reverse and turn left and brake it almost cracks sometimes but never when driving forward can't find anything loose any thoughts?

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ramon Alvarez says:

Swelling lug nuts are very common with not only Ford but Chrysler too. Reason why because majority of independent shops and dealerships recommend tire rotation with every oil change. Heat builds up causing to swell up cap lug nuts.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars EnderWiggin says:

Ran into this over the weekend with the wife's SRX, pretty sure the dealer over-torqued the nuts on the rear wheels during a recall, as the fronts were just fine.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Harry Brown says:

I had thes nuts on a uk ford fiesta, terrible quality, rounded off so easily, like they are made of hollow tin, changed for solid steel ones.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ed P says:

Wouldn't you like to have a one on one with the design engineers in a back alley….

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dean arundel says:

19.5mm socket sorts the issue. Impact tools are the cause of the problem, they blow the cap.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Christopher Woods says:

Ford lug nuts are cheap nasty chocolate toy ones you can buy for £3 each from eBay. Even a good socket and torque bar can round them off if you're not careful, so you can imagine what two or three rounds of ugga-duggas by a tyre shop can do. I ended up fitting McGards all round and never looked back.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jfsoccervids says:

    nice

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mikspapa says:

The nuts used by Ford are way beyond useless. Our local dealer wanted $350 plus the cost of their "new and improved" lug nuts, which were exactly the same as the old ones. Bought a new set of locking lugs with keys for $35 and changed them myself. This 2013 Escape my WIFE bought is the biggest piece of crap ever built, bar none.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Kapica says:

I dealt with those so many times. What a pain in the ass it is.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars scionxalee says:

Never thought I would see Ray talk about somebody's crusty, abused nuts

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jonah Lamb says:

Nothings worse than having swollen lugs

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeremy Johnson says:

Ray reminds me of me: clumsy/dropping stuff all the time … but with quick reflexes

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Gagnon says:

Use a 3/8 extension through the socket to knock the lug nut out of the tool after removal

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jay Audette says:

Just went thru the same lug nut drill with my '15 Focus Titanium. Some of it due to overzealous 'new' NASCAR' mechanics practicing pit stops. I could tell from the dents in two of the four wheels just outside the bolt circle after the brake pad replacement. I won't mention the name of the 'chain'.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Philip says:

Had the same issue with my '08 Jeep Wrangler; a "tough, off-road vehicle" but fitted with these crappy capped soft wheel nuts that round out easily & then fall-off and could leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere if you ever needed to change a tyre out on the trails (the supplied wheel wrench is oversized if the caps are gone and you need to wrench on the nut underneath).

Had one where the thin chrome cap came off (several of these caps on the other wheel nuts had gone missing too) and the nut underneath was rounded-out (seems that they are made of really soft steel). Try as we did it wouldn't come loose (probably overtightened & rounded-out by a tyre shop at a previous rotation/change) so had to drill & punch the stud out in the end and replace it. Got back to town & replaced the lot with old-school (but cheap) solid-steel aftermarket nuts and they work great & have never let me down since, despite numerous rotations using impact drivers.

Just goes to show that sometimes cheap Chinese aftermarket replacement parts are actually better than OEM parts found on US-assembled vehicles (having said that, quite a few of the OEM parts on my Wrangler including the alloy wheels are stamped "made in China" so it appears that I may have just replaced some inferior Chinese parts with slightly more expensive and better engineered Chinese parts).

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars geofjones9 says:

I saw the capped lug nut problem on people's car when I stopped to help a breakdown. The lug wrench that came with the car had destroyed the cap, now the "naked" nut was too small for the wrench. No corrosion evident, just stupid design. A simple flat tire turned into a long distance wrecker call (this was on the freeway in the Nevada desert). They probably had to heat and chisel that nut off!

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pastyman says:

A day in the life of a nutty mechanic. Priceless 😉

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GreyDog EdmDriver says:

This looks like a buy here pay here car. Tire Shine, fresh wash, replacing noticeable defective parts, test drive probably identified a “squeak”. Corner lots brings you the car, you suggest repairs, repairs declined because they are just trying to sell it on looks.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Geary says:

This is stupid.. . I literally just did the rear brakes on a 17 fusion. And every single cap was swole and stripped. Lucky autozone had enough left and even more so that they had a 19mm socket to hammer on to get them off.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheOnespeedbiker says:

There is a YouTube channel I won't name it but the person swears the bulging Ford lug nuts is a conspiracy theory and berates Ford Boss Me for pushing that one might want to replace the Ford two piece lug nuts. I questioned him about it (included a link to this video) and mentioned CTA sells oversized sockets to address the issue, he remarked it's because "mechanics are not the smartest people in the world". I then challenged him saying he was pretty much calling over half a million mechanics dummies for disagreeing with him, he denied he said such a thing and further said I was now banned from making any further comments on his channel. Pretty cool. I have never been banned from anything before, it makes one feel important somehow.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars floorpizza says:

Regarding the two tenths vs. one hour pay…. I'm a customer, and I'd demand to pay the full one hour. You pay your people for the work they do. Good customers know this, and are happy to pay for quality work. And it's a two-way street… if a customer is too cheap to pay more than two tenths, then that's the type of customer you don't want.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andrew says:

tire shine with sparkles in it

    we need a purge

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Cunningham says:

😂. Yes , your Nuts need Shaving and Talcum Powdering once a Fortnight .
Those Chrome Caps on the Lug-nuts should be simple " Dress covers " .
Removed with screwdriver or pliers BEFORE rattling the Real Nut . Heavy Vehicle style .
The Snap-On Warranty thing is Excellent . That is THEM standing behind their Product . Confident AND Confidence inspiring . 10 points .
There is something really Satisfying about the Torque Wrench things , huh . Old Marine Engineer here . That Last Click says , OK , That's DONE .

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eli says:

I thought the used the maximum pressure in the air-gun, thats what a outside-ford mechanic told me.
Cuz its not only a fiesta and a fusion, its also my CRV (apparently the Honda and Ford service in my town is shared inside both dealers)

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars acdii says:

It's not just Ford that uses these cheap ass capped nuts. These cheap ass things are on a LOT of cars going back to the 80's. Bane of my existence back when I turned a wrench in the 90's. My Snap On extension for the lug nut socket snapped on the impact end, probably from smacking it all the years trying to get the socket off the stupid nuts.

Man that phone ringer would drive me nuts, the cause of nightmares hearing it 6 days a week!

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nicholas Coucoularis says:

For suspension noise I use a can of silicone spray and spray stuff and check it off as I go

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars rowhsv says:

Half a tire rotation, really? Oh, and would 3/4" fit just a tiny bit better than 19mm on the swollen lug nuts?

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Backman says:

Volvo has that capped nut design too.
But despite being in Sweden, with salted winter roads, the ones I've seen haven't swelled. If they swell in your car friendly climate, Ford must be doing something wrong.
Not particularly fond of the design though. The caps tend to come off and stick in the socket. Which, of course, you don't notice until you wonder why the socket won't fit over the next nut. Then it's down to some desultory, poking&prodding to get the nut out of the socket before you can continue with the task.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joel Dziak says:

"chrome delamination" – known matter. Garbage sourced crap that saved a few pennies in production

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars WhalerGA says:

Oh, no !! DORMAN lug nuts !!

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Notesy's Nook says:

So, to replace a set of ford nuts, what would you recommend as replacements?

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Delle says:

Just replaced shocks and struts on my ford Fusion. Now I have clunks, groans and bumping, knocking sounds coming from front and rear. Not real loud or terrible sounding, but noticeable. I have gone back over every fastener several times. All are tight and secure. These sounds have to be coming from within the units themselves. I'm worried about how long they'll last. I'm not going to tear them off and send them back unless they fail within the warranty period. The brand is well known for quality but I'm not real pleased with the noises.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Parsons says:

Everyone should take better care of their nuts. wash, polish, and sometimes they need to be licked.
