Funny how mechanics feel that other mechanics are by default crooked.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars One Tone says:

I think a compression test would've yielded some information while you had the plugs out.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Royce Ardery says:

Ray, I love your videos you are a DAMN good mechanic But take this from someone who has been doing this work for 22 years, and with love USE your DAMN GLOVES! I and a couple people I know have had to deal with cancer because some of the chemicals involved like to soak into your skin and it's accumulative, especially the Oils and solvents and such. I would hate for you to have to deal with something like that…

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DirtySouthDoGgg says:

Your breaking the law video recording with the phone in your hand while driving, living on the wild side

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars craig bollinger says:

That Toyota probably has another 100k before it needs a engine unless the timing belt breaks

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff G says:

I doubt any of the rings are broken – you'd see deeper gouges if so. What is more common is the oil control ring gets fouled and sticks out in one or two places, scratching the walls. A hail-mary engine flush might unstick the rings, but those scratches are going to cause oil consumption.

PS: you can replace valve stem seals without pulling the head. Set the cylinder to TDC and used compressed air or a small coiled rope to keep the valve in place. At TDC even if the valve does fall (if you lose air pressure), it won't fall all the way in and you'll be able to pull it up by hand and reapply pressure. Amazon has plenty of special tools to help compress the springs and R&R the keepers (though you can get by using a 16mm socket, latex glove, & old valve stem seal)

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tedmich says:

Sorry to have you meet one of these Ray: 2007-2009 Camry 4 cylinder were the worst Camry's ever, with head bolt threads that let go and oil control rings that clogged. The V6 of these years was bullet proof, though rarer.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TakeDeadAim says:

That scoring is pretty high up the cylinder wall to be the oil ring, unless of course I’m wrong and it’s a short skirt piston and rings are all at the top of the piston. Anyway that was the best interaction I could think of at 0103hrs

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob Smith says:

I know that you can't say so, but the possibility exists of failure to change and/or fill the oil. I wonder, if you were to check the oil, would it be full and clean? That's what happens after a car owner discovers his engine running rough after oil abuse.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars smallblockV8 says:

We have a 2010 Camry with the 2AR-FE in the shop. Broken intake valve spring in cylinder 1. Made contact with the piston too – had to pull the head and send it out.

For your '09, I'd drop some seafoam or trans fluid in the engine and have the customer drive it for a while. It's a last resort, result is 50/50, worst case it does nothing and engine still needs replacing.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mathew Hoffer says:

You need to invest in a set of snap on extensions with the pin so that when using air powered impact wrenches with extensions the sockets do not become air borne and lost .. no they are not cheap but time is money trying to find and retrieve lost sockets ejected at speed across the shop.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don's Junkmail says:

    Kinna sad

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don's Junkmail says:

    Compression test? Hmm

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars guitartec says:

Add a can of Restore to give you a few hundred extra miles as the owner goes from bank to bank trying to obtain a load for said repair. Just a thought

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Poky's Place says:

I seen it the first time at the start of the video.. this happens when oil goes unchanged for long periods of time during use of vehicle.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ADRIAN PARADA says:

How are you brother nice videos!! That camry must be 2010 cause 2009 only came in 2.4L and 3.5L!! I have a 2009 2.4L!! Nice videos!! Keep em coming!!

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don's Junkmail says:

    Snap on repo man

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cherokee2005 says:

Another great video Ray, very informative and entertaining.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars America First says:

I would soak that cylinder with seafoam or berrymans b12 to clean up that cylinder and rings

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don's Junkmail says:

Wheres brake clean and the "CLAW"?

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jesse wynne says:

Unfortunately cuz the carbon clean and extensive long 10k repeated oil changes big NO it caused piston ring walls to be so gorged that even a carbon clean it’s too late..oils going to pass the piston ring from the wear on the cylinder wall now…had they done oil changes every 5 k or sooner
And carbon cleaned and long drives and not so many short in town drives
It prob could’ve been saved if it was caught sooner…

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don's Junkmail says:

    Hoakus pokus

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hal Weilbrenner says:

Do you ever check plug wires with an ohm meter?

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jdogg9696 says:

I just watched another video of a complete teardown of a Toyota Camry with the same issue. They are saying it's because Toyota has a 10k mile oil change and some oil cannot meet that lifespan, hence wear starts prematurely. So I think the moral of the story is change your oil 5k miles or less. Do you guys agree?

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jesse wynne says:

They do have carbon cleaners like CRz5 that completely works
Pour into oil run for 20 mins
Dump oil and change and new oil
And it releases the carbon which releases the rings and can save you from having to need a new engine

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jesse wynne says:

Toyota had this same problem with the 07 ZFE 4 cyl engines in the rav4
And Toyota says to never do oil changes past the 4,500 / 5,000 miles
To keep the low tension piston rings
Clean and prevent carbon build up that locks the rings and allows oil to pass around the piston
    Causing oil consumption issues…
Toyota even recalled and rebuilt or replaced those engines used in 07 rav4 and Camrys and celica
    Actually 07 Toyota Celicas
Had the worst problem with people racing and blowing those engines..
For some reason Toyota even used those engines in their SCION models
And idk why they let that engine design go on for so many years..
I think Toyota stopped rebuilding or replacing those engines on cars that kept doing 10k miles oil changes
Only way you could get a new or rebuilt engine for free was to prove you did your oil changes every 5k miles or sooner…

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thermal Reboot says:

In may day we'd do a leak down test to narrow it down to head or rings.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars solly g says:

I've learned alot from you 💯

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars solly g says:

Simple way to know ole skool is take of the oil filler cover. An see a timely pushig of smoke… then that cylinder is having issues tight valves or tell me. Turn the round hydraulic tippet. Then you can get a dremell. an you get.true

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Oscar Garcia says:

Such low miles for a Toyota,,
    that sucks

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Bignall says:

Why is it always the 10mm…lol

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Becker says:

hey those paycheck collection trucks are they anything like paycheck collection websites (shopping sites not those ones you nasties)

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars George Reiss says:

The first e in borescope is silent.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars UltramindcontroL realzz says:

    Thats sucks

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craigie F Concert says:

Interesting video, but if you had the boroscope to begin with wouldn’t it have saved a whole bunch of work? Made a good video though.

Now was that scoring due to extended oil change intervals? I wonder if you could have looked at their service history.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Simon Allan says:

I've had more than one car with a dead cylinder, and twice I removed the rockers (or just the pushrods on the old Valiant) so the valves didn't open, and no blowback into the crankcase, no worries 👍 I drove on 5 cylinders for many miles, even off road was great being auto they didn't have enough power to get stuck, actually one of my sparkplugs had zero gap after being hit by a piece of the piston, I diagnosed broken rings that eventually hammer their way to the top (the Toyota) but the Valiant had a melted valley down one side of the piston.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Bennett says:

Another victim of 10K mile warranty oil changes…

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rolando Ocampo says:

lol happen to find the long lost 10mm socket? Hopefully you found it before the test drive, those 10mm tend to run away from mechanics XD.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars michelediane miller says:

yota had an issue with 2azfe engines ,,,,,, bad batch of oil rings on the pistons caused by them sticking

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mostly Motorized says:

Its common knowledge that the 2010 year range 2.5L toyota motors are junk. The valve guides and or seals let excessive oil through to the intake side….. i think theres even a recall.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Winzlo says:

Great video, except for the part where you introduced drama by dropping a bolt and then never covering how you recovered it. More drama! LOL

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Anthony Von says:

Those years of that Toyota 4 cyl are known to have ring issues.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Pope says:

    Snap-On Paycheck Collection Truck! 🤣🤣
I remember those days, too, before my USAF days.
But, hey, the Snap-On guy's kids need shoes, too.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Martin Arrieta says:

    Grasias

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Johnny444 says:

Had a toyota with same issues. Oil on spark plugs causing misfires after every 10k miles. Had to add 1qt every 1000miles too. Did a piston soak overnight with B12 and it's fixed. Worth a shot.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris says:

    Honesty 😎

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jose martinez says:

I don't think it's worth putting an engine into a 13 year old car. I would just drive it until the motor finally blows up and then junk it.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars skymaster71 says:

There is heat there too. Nice work.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SabotPottery says:

It's refreshing to hear a mechanic concur with another shop's diagnosis and methodology (It's probably not what the customer wanted to hear as its more money for the second opinion). Great work as usual, thanks.

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris says:

    Snap-on paycheck collection truck 🤣😂😅🤣😂😅

  51. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don Shaw says:

Like reading a good book, you held my interest right to the end of this video. Thank you for a great and in depth diagnosis.

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kenny Cunningham says:

Did you retrieve the socket or did the Toyotas value go up 50 bucks.

  53. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Julian Yang says:

This is interesting. The older 2 azfe had issues with piston rings and oil burning. The newer 2arfe engines solved that problem.

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ethan Murray says:

I appreciate the process but so much time wasted by not having the scope to inspect the cylinder as soon as you pulled the plug. Scoping the cylinders as part of your normal inspection routine for suspected base engine faults just makes life so much easier. I love being able to take pics of irrefutable evidence to show the customer why their engine is damaged

  55. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Welch says:

Good job Ray, you tried your best.

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Tone says:

With all the plugs out I would have done a compression check. Would have shown ring condition. I notice Ray has never done one with a appearance of oil..

  57. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bigjarn says:

    Thanks

  58. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Yeah Right says:

    Not possible. Toyota's "last 'forever'!"

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gavin Rewell says:

    Fantastic video Ray

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Henry says:

hahahahahaha paycheck collection truck…….I bought an rechargeable impact years ago and the thing cost a fortune off the Cornwell truck…..Still works to this day as i just rebuilt the battery packs.

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Slugg0matic says:

I was really cheering for the little 'yota.

You know you could have saved a lot of time by agreeing with the previous shop, but you didn't. That's awesome! You are the man.

  62. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jimmy JimJims says:

What we used to do on Geo Metros when this happened (by this I mean the piston ring sticking) is we would mix acetone/ATF and dump it down the cylinder hole after removing the spark plug. Then we'd let it sit for a week untouched. After that we'd take all the plugs out and crank it over. Very little usually sprayed out which meant it worked. Reinstall the plug, change the oil and many times this would unstick the offending piston ring

  63. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars HolyDr1ver says:

Easy fix: drain oil, fill with diesel instead of oil, let run idle for 1 minute, repeat the process once more and then drain diesel, fill with oil. Should be good as new.

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chad Field says:

The 2008-2011 Toyota Camrys with the 2AZ-FE engine were notorious for engine oil consumption due to the factory piston oil ring defect. Owners of these cars had until 60k mi to get Toyota to conduct the factory recall; this car probably did not get that message. I bought my ‘09 Camry with 144k on it for $5500 not aware of this oil ring defect as I thought all Toyotas were indestructible. It was not until I checked my oil one day and found no oil touching the dip stick which caused me to check further thinking I was having a bad valve cover leak due to oil in 2x of the spark plug cavities. Replaced valve cover, changed remaining oil, and started watching oil on the dipstick disappear 500mi after change. Did some online research and found this engine model number was a factory defect and only fix is a new/salvage yard engine. Within a month, went and traded Camry in for a 2021 Subaru Forester; got $2k trade on Camry. Knowing that engine was defective, I could not I. Good conscience private sale that car to someone else.

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John LaCroix says:

TY,,,,,,WOW incredible very interesting super kool ,1st class great info.,, AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ again great video I liked it a lot ,keep up the great work.

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Francis Kingz says:

I really enjoy the channel. Watching it is causing one serious issue though.

I find myself saying/thinking "click" every time I tighten something down. Whether it be a pickle jar, bottle of tequila or whatever. Wife is starting to give me odd looks.

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rick Ptak says:

It looks like it needs an Italian Tune Up to clean out the Carbon.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bigjarn says:

do you like the VVT option?

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Big B Big B says:

I change my oil every 3,000 miles. Toyota says 10,000 miles. Nice video. Thanks for going above and beyond.

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 29 auto says:

Looks like somebody has been doing one of those 10,000 mile oil change intervals, because the oil manufacture said so. LOL!

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Wildman113 says:

Typical Toyoder JUNK. People buy a worst in class vehicle because they buy into the farce and end up paying later. It's comical.

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michel Brown says:

Could it be injector that would be dirty and not vaporising gas properly ? ?

  73. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob DeFalco says:

Comment added to drive traffic. Hail the algorithm.

  74. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Victor Song says:

So much for the myth of those bulletproof Toyotas… 110K miles – engine disassembly/replacement. Just like a Chrysler… Except you PAY more for this myth…

  75. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! Seth Henriksen says:

God I wish I live closer to your shop. No shop can fully figure out what wrong with my car and I’m super lost

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sreejith Mohan says:

I have a question on this bro. While swapping the injectors, we have to update the injector number on the ECM unit..

  79. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Cromwell says:

Certain vintages of 2.5 lkiter Camrys have known ring problems.

  80. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matthew Martin says:

So here is a question I've always had. When technicians take a vehicle on a test drive, what happens if you get pulled over or worse, get in a wreck. Does the shop have insurance? Just thinking especially if you have to do a wide open throttle test, some hidden cop might see you and not be so understanding.

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars firedchiefpaul says:

I’ll bet you have good parents.

  84. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John and stacy Gibbs says:

i had same issue but it turned out to be a cracked coil boot that only misfired at higher heat range going down road. seeing how easily you pulled the coil packs out i have to ask if that isn’t the issue as well b4 saying engine is no good? did you do compression check too?

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim McNeil says:

Do all 10mm sockets go to heaven?

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard G says:

YT.. is getting more and more greedy . 3 ad breaks . Worse and worse .

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cheng Saetern says:

This is mainly due to lack of oil change and 10k mile changes.

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Testicules says:

    Snap-on paycheck collection truck
    Good one 😂

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jon Allen says:

That car must have been built on a Monday lol

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Morris Lancaster says:

Agree with Ira Kopilow. While your diagnosis may have cost a bit, you were trying to rule out simpler causes and save client some money. The borescope first would have been great, but understand you were using the tools you had. Shame to see a Toyota die with just a few over 100k..

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don Gordon says:

I really wanted you to be right on the fuel injector. Way to go on the swaps. They probably did not keep up on oil changes over the lifetime of zee auto.

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Slik Rhodez says:

Great demonstration of an effective use of swaptronics!

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars james moar says:

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SolarGarage says:

    Love the video.

  95. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars NTH Welding says:

How can it be. according to another youtube mechanic that yells, Toyotas never break. If you don't own a Toyota your basically a dummy. You know who I'm talking about. Would a cylinder leak down test confirm a bad ring?

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Extra Steez says:

mr ray. your scanner doesnt haave an active misfire counter?

  97. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Winnfield Customs says:
