Motor Repair

Quick. I had to just sort of stop what i was doing make short video. Video. I was doing some ac work on this thing um.

We're not going touch on that right now. But i saw a bunch of corrosion on this battery. So i decided to uh just make that go away and i sprayed it all off and got everything clean and i came over here and blew off all the debris and i managed to blow up this auto craft sticker right here. Look.

What i found under it is it an auto craft. Or is it a car quest. Yes. I do realize that uh advanced auto.

Parts owns park quest or vice versa or something like that. But i just thought that was funny things are not always what they appear to be there's the proof actually you know what i'm kind of torn. I don't really know what to do here do i do i leave it as it is or do i expose the truth haha now it's a car quest battery. But hey on the bright side it didn't say car quest silver or car quest regular.

So they didn't upgrade the rebrand they they left it linear. Thanks for watching see you guys later.

  1. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars watajob says:

    They're all made
by Johnson Controls, Penn or Deka. What's the difference? And, labels are liberally switched at the factories. I worked for Federated auto parts for 17 years. You'd be surprised what goes on. Always buy the cheapest battery. The price difference pays for the warranty difference; that's all.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim Heersma says:

Same part number, same cranking amps, same capacity…unless the Autocraft brand is more expensive than the CarQuest brand, no harm, no foul.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Speedy Man Charles says:

Autozone does the same thing they have their Valuecraft/Duralast standard, gold, platinum for general consumers and they just change out the stickers for commercial accounts to "pro power" stickers. They're all made in the same factory anyway even between auto part stores.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars LoveTap says:

When working for bumper to bumper the batteries came in pallets and unmarked, only after someone ordered one would we stick whatever label they ordered for and send it off. I always wondered if there was a price difference based on what label was on there, made me feel like i was doing something shady

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tyborg427 says:

As someone that works at Advance, the Carquest switched to Autocraft, then switched to DieHard. They’re literally the same batteries with different stickers.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ikantspell4 says:

Brands don't mean diddly. Generic/ store brand and national brand are often made in the same facilities with the same material. It's super common for labels to be the only difference between products. The really big problem is it only provides the illusion of choice. You really can't pick the company you want to do business with an a product you trust because every product is the same garbage. In an ideal world getting a xyz from company abc would mean something but in reality consumers are forced to roll the dice every time they purchase something.

Difference between customer and commercially sold battery

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fake Jeep says:

There's only two manufacturers[or three?] on car batteries, so this doesn't matter to me really.

Now if they changed the year or CCA… thaaaats when I'd start taking offense.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jon gone gone says:

carquest was bought out by everybody, there old stuff got new name brand stickers. anything with carquest connection from years ago i pass on. bad quality.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dave A says:

What if the bar codes don’t match… now they won’t be able to warranty it. I would have left the sticker on.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Zach Vyvyan says:

Top sticker is for DIY customers. Bottom sticker is for DIFM customers. Same rating. Same warranty. Same everything. Both Advance and AutoZone do this. NAPA does not and I don't know about O'reilly's.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars hightechbri says:

If the battery was installed by a Carquest Technet shop the upper label was to be removed to expose the Carquest label that included a phone number because it would then include roadside assistance.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars nunya bisnass says:

You think thats suspicious? I've been seeing AAA batteries with factory stickers stuck on over older stickers, some up to 6 months out of the pull date, which means they are already a year old before being installed.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Mixer says:

This was probably a matter of the battery producer makes both brands and either had one of the other brand sticker mixed with the stickers for what was ordered and was caught and swapped to the brand going out off of the production line at the time or maybe a rush order and an abundance of one brand already stickered and they put another brand over those that were needed on the rush. More than a few ways that things like these can happen. It to be expected with all the brands of batteries and only a few manufacturers producing them.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brandon says:

    😂

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Oby-1 says:

I used to pick up dead batteries by the semi load for recycle from battery outlets and in the back warehouse there were racks and racks of different sizes and shapes of batteries. At one end of the warehouse was a large rack with an assortment of decal rolls. These rolls were labelled with Nissan, Toyota, Napa, etc. When someone ordered a battery, one of the workers would walk back to the warehouse and take down the appropriate battery of size and amperage and then go to the rack of decals and choose a decal of the appropriate make or brand and sticker the battery. They would then take the battery up to the front and sell the genuine Toyota, Nissan or Napa or whatever brand to the customer.
This was in many, many warehouses in every city, so it is not an uncommon thing to do.
The batteries I picked up were the dead, damaged or batteries that didn't sell in time as all batteries age whether used or not.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Corey Houser says:

Duralast, car quest, die hard, and auto craft are the same exact batteries. Same as any other item both autozone and advanced auto sells. They hate each other but use the same parts and autozone sells cheaper. At my advanced auto parts store we received a batter with Duralast on the side and Die Hard on the top.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Billie Maier says:

Should have left the original in case they need it for a warranty issue.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Coop says:

There are only three battery manufacturers in the US. So, it doesn’t really matter. We are all buying branded batteries.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary D says:

    Remember
    1 gas station
    1 grocery store
    Lol

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gilgamesh says:

Does the barcode matches? Imagine the customer going for warranty and being told "that's not the correct battery, we can't replace it".

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars james tackett says:

The autocraft label is for diy customers and more than likely had installed at advance auto when a commercial shop orders and installs one they’re supposed to remove it and expose the carquest label to show that it was installed them that’s the only reason for the two labels

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fireship1 says:

If it was a Walmart battery, I’d be pissed! Then again, only three or so manufacturers make almost all of the lead acid automotive batteries in the US.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars aBMWEnthusiast says:

I am not 100% certain, but removing the sticker may cause warranty issues should the purchaser need to replace the battery. If it bothered you, you could have mentioned it to the vehicle's owner.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Air Cav says:

It’s acceptable the “autocraft “ is sold retail over the counter the “Carquest “ is sold by shops as a commercial battery however Advance has bought the Die Hard line and now sells only Die Hard batteries to the commercial shops. Now it’s don’t know if they sell the Die Hard battery to the retail customer because I haven’t been into one of their stores I only have them delivered to my shop

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cloud Strife says:

    I say it is both.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joel Hunter says:

Carquest was intended for Commercial customers, while AutoCraft, is for the DIY market. just saying

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tombax says:

This kind of stuff happens. I worked for Advance around the time they acquired Carquest. I left to go work at a Chrysler dealership before they really integrated the Carquest brand. Judging by the case they're both still made by Johnson Controls. Lead acid batteries are pretty well figured out by now anyway. I'm going to chalk this up to them having ordered a bunch of Carquest branded batteries then realized they actually needed a bunch of Autocraft ones. At the end of the day, they weren't bad and they weren't great. I prefer Deka if I can get my hands on one. Lead acid is a very mature technology and they're pretty much all the same now. When I was in automotive parts aftermarket you'd see significant degradation at the 3 year mark. All three of my cars have five year old batteries now and they're all fine.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stealthcon69 says:

So what we did when we had these batteries DIY customers would leave the auto craft sticker on but when it was a commercial account to install the battery and peel after auto craft sticker shock Carquest so if the customer came in and try to warranty the battery and we see it said Carquest we would make sure that they didn’t install the battery themselves or a shop did it

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SmartGames says:

I work at advance and we used to remove those stickers when we sold them for commercial account, I always found it dum but thats what they told me the reason was. Now days we sell Diehard so you wont see that anymore.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dub says:

Youd be surprised that the Autocraft then got restickered as DieHard. Did that myself at Advance Auto Parts lol

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars aw738 says:

I could have told you that 5 years ago. I worked there for 25 years. Left 2 1/2 years ago. If it was sold to a commercial account the top label was supposed to be removed.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Burke says:

Now that you removed that label their transmission will fail and it will be all your fault!😆

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars aznboycols says:

Couldn't the owner claim that you switched the battery to a CarQuest one?

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eric G says:

All these batteries are the same, they come from the same manufacturer, usually Johnson controls and then the retailer slaps their sticker on it or possibly the manufacturer does it for them. So I wouldn't say dishonest just sloppy

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Big Tuna says:

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Henry says:

    Good job Ray

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MonkeyJedi99 says:

Not completely dishonest, but amazingly lazy re-labeling.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mrkt trdr says:

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars sand 007 says:

Maybe should have left the label on as the warranty for the battery was based on it

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars G R says:

Leave it the way you found it.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mj says:

As much as I agree with you, it’s not your place to remove it, what if the owner had to return for warranty how would they verify warranty availability

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ed Mawhinney says:

    Great channel too!

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ed Mawhinney says:

I worked for O'Reilly auto parts when they bought out checker, shucks, kragen and we did this to alot of csk branded parts. The new label stil carried the same warranty or a better one. This happens all over the industry, nothing really dishonest about it as long as they honor a warra8

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tbizzh says:

Clean the battery and say you put a new one in. 😜

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars thephantom1492 says:

Things sometimes are never what they appear to be.

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J. Mark Krzystofiak says:

Neither! Just a late change out the sticker roll at the battery factory.

  55. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Awesomus Maximus says:

    Depends on the price difference

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Twisted says:

I have point this out for years. People don't seem to care. They started doing this right after Car Quest purchased Advance, and World Pac.

  57. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craig Jorgensen says:

There are only two or three battery manufacturers in the US. They private brand for everyone.

  58. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Smee says:

Neither actually made the battery. So both stickers are wrong.

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nino Titan says:

take the Carquest sticker off to see the Johnson Control sticker.

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Cruz says:

Ex Autozone commercial manager here, the reason why that has two stickers is because when the battery is sold to a diy (or in store)customer, we know the battery is actually from the store sold to a average customer, when the battery is sold to a commercial account (or a automotive shop) the parts driver is the pull that sticker off to change the label to a commercial sale only battery. That helps the store indicate that if the battery sold becomes a return for any reason, we can determine where it actually came from. For example if a average customer decided to return a commercial battery, we know not to accept it because they shouldn’t have that battery to being with. And vice versa. There are other reasons why the sticker changes for example: branding, battery tier, etc. but the lost prevention is the most important aspect for that sticker change. So next time a shop gets a battery with out the sticker change, make sure to tell the parts dude to do his job! Also yes the stickers always say the same specs as the last sticker on the battery. Just the branding changes.

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ron Gollonik says:

Will ripping off the sticker be a problem if the battery is serviced under warranty? It no longer appears to be the battery the person bought.

  62. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Patrick Morrissey says:

Yeah, uhh… My understanding is, there's only like 3 battery plants in the country, excluding the crazy expensive exotic stuff… So, for something "normal"… Chances are it's the same as something else…..

There's a big Motorcycle company, who has a very high opinion of their branded batteries…. You can buy the identical battery from the battery company for half the price….

And, To Be Fair, good Sir, if I may…. they did NOT change the SPECS on the battery…. so…. Probably just resold to someone else, to be their "house" brand battery… Put a sticker on it & ship it….

  63. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars harold h says:

So . Does this muck up the pro rated warrantee… ?

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars C Flip says:

    No biggie👍

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars sniperic1 says:

AS lone as the battery was the same date i/e say 09/2020 on both stickers and they did not change any of the other values then I don't see a problem with it. Now if the battery had two dates and the older sticker showed the battery was past its performance lifetime then that would be wrong. I never gotten a bad battery from advanced. However I say that certain store with the name Batteries and the + symbol sold me an out of date lawn mower battery knowing full well they had put a new sticker on it with a new date. Yep and of course the battery was doa, and they had to make good on it. I know batteries do sit for some time not being sold, but selling a battery pasted its date is unethical

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bo K. says:

Well after Ray exposed the truth, what happens now if the battery fails and the customer tries to claim the warranty. However it looks like the battery is over 3 years old, so the warranty does not matter any more.

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Y says:

Shoulda left the sticker on. AutoCraft is way more reliable.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars B61 Mack says:

According to my Advance auto manager. One tag is the consumer tag and the other tag is for Pro Shops like yours. That way they can tell where it came from if an exchange is required.

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tacticool Millenial says:

It doesnt matter. there are only 3 places in the US that make Batteries. DEKA is one of them. They make batteries for Autozone, NAPA, Die Hard, Exide. Ive hauled scrap lead ingots to them and saw their batteries being made and saw who picks them up. Their biggest customer is Autozone. But Check them out in Kutztown, PA.

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dean Moberg says:

You're splitting hairs my friend. Is this the result of not having enough content? Grasping at straws so-to-speak?

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob Dyar says:

Well to be honest you should have left the AC tag. Without that tag if anything goes wrong now the customer does not have a warranty.

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Lindsey says:

My understanding is there is only a few battery manufacturers in the US. So like someone else stated as long as the capabilities are not false then it's fine to relabel.

  73. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Willard Dunn says:

I worked for an auto parts warehouse for 17 years and we sold batteries that were provided by Exide.
The batteries came in unlabeled except the type of group it was. We sold different brands or labeled batteries.
it the jobber ordered a certain brand we drug a battery of group and put that label on it. No matter the brand they were the same battery.

  74. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars gudenau says:

Eh, this is fine. They just didn't do the job correctly and left the other sticker on.

  75. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars darkknight145 says:

Would be interesting to compare the cost of the battery from both names.

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MrCoolBreath says:

Advance Auto employee here; carquest supplies at least half of our overall parts. The autocraft batteries (which we no longer sell, only diehard now) were what we branded it for diy customers. for commercial we would remove the label and show carquest. Don't know the logic behind the separation but don't worry there is no shenanigans going on as far as quality

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars R Phuche says:

what's the point. They all come out of the same factory.

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Job38 Four says:

  84. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Skinner says:

When I worked at NAPA auto Parts, in my hometown, we had a 'Mechanic' who would come in, having Rotors to be turned, and buying a can of Aluminum Gray Spray paint, and he would brag about selling used rotors back to the customer as new.

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ilikemeatballz says:

Its commonplace for a automotive aftermarket company who also owns a "commercial" division to do that. The retail battery has an sticker overlay you remove when selling to repair shops to differentiate. Also prevents repair customers from walking into retail for a battery warranty if they got it at a shop which dictate thier own warranty on the "revealed" brand.

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Titchenal says:

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Noack73 says:

I have also been in the battery wholesale business, and it is very normal for a factory to sell their products to multible brands, with the only difference being the stickers.
