It's a hot topic, I know. Almost as debatable as "am I a technician or a mechanic?" In my opinion the lab scope is very necessary and can save you loads of time diagnosing a problem as I demonstrate in this video checking cam to crank correlation in this video. The only other way that can be done is by removing the timing covers. Let me know what you think! -Enjoy!

I Purchased the Maxisys Ultra this past year, it has the integrated scope in the VCM seems very robust especially for me being a advanced DIY'r. Yes please keep doing more scope vids they great learning tools.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jay Faulk says:

Just curious if you still feel that a picoscope is a good investment? After all this time, I haven't seen a lot of video's in the past few years with the picoscope.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ernie Goram says:

I think if you do mechanic work even as a hobby if you don't have a scope it's because you don't know you need one or know that you can use one and make your life easier mine's on order through alltwl. This is where the first time I've ever commented on any of your shows but overall I've watched a lot of your shows and you do a really good job explaining everything so that's all I got to say keep up the good work man.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SuperSport4 says:

Great video! But how can you distinguish the timing isn’t off a tooth or the relictos has shifted by 10*? Everything you say makes perfect sense and I enjoy your videos, I’m just wondering because I work on these engines often

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank Jackson says:

Do you have to have at least 5 channels to set up like that?

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Adam Meehan says:

Gonna git the maxiscope for my autel ty so much for getting me on the autel trip. Bought a ms906bt with bore scope and now gonna get the scope as well this thing has paid for itself 10 times over from day 1 and I love it an absolute blast and got me hooked on identafix had that for a few months and don't know how I lived withoot them for so long. I have you in my ear all day long just listening to the channel while busting these knucks sir 🙂 I tip my hat 🤠 like so and say good day!

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Up2NoGood says:

Having a scope and knowing how to use one. That should be the question…As 95% would have no clue what their looking at. And you still need access to Wiring diagrams that are correct. Then you need a library of known good wave forms..As you would be just guessing and $2,000.00+ dollars broke…

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sebastian Villela says:

Sometimes customer isn't even interested in fixing it though

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Svtford4x4 says:

Mostly been lack of know-how for me.

Not many shops get into advanced electrical diagnosing, so any learning is usually done by proactive research instead of on the job training. I'd imagine quoting is tough as well. Could get lucky and find a problem quickly or could spend hours on it you'll never get back.

The investment of a scope is pretty pricey so knowing which one to get is another part of it.

I'm entertaining the idea, not sure where to spend, what's worth it what's shit… And a lil intimidating too. Would love some scope kick start vids!

Thinking of getting a 4 channel picoscope for our shop. I have some experience with using an oscilloscope from my old robotics job. What is a good source for training for using a scope to diagnose vehicles?

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe Vreeland says:

Having owned Autoscan and Snap-On and best of them all —> Allen 16-000 Series Analyzers over the years – until DIS showed up, now I find that I need to get back into oscilloscopes all over again.
    It's a different world.
COP and VVT and modules all over the place in vehicles since @ 2003 or so, make it mandatory that you have a good ability to use one.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tangofied says:

Hi Eric, what are your thoughts on the Autel scope and scanner?

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mad mechanic says:

Its a GM just replace the engine. Its garbage anyway. Anyone that thinks GM is a superior product is an Amature Mechanic. Chevy guys talk a big game don't know shit and can't fix a sandwich.
Zeus is the way to go if your going to waste all that diagnoses time , just saying. I mean,.. it looks good right? 😆

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charlie Leyko says:

Great video ,more info the the better I always wanna see the smoking gun ! Your exactly right soon as you tear it down there’s no way to recheck it’s better to have all info !

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MPB says:

Would this diagnostic procedure still apply for vehicles that have Variable Valve Timing?

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joni says:

lack of knowledge of how to use a scope… also a scope is crazy exspensive for one owner maintained vehicle.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GCMD says:

    Great video!

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph G says:

what information system do you prefer identifix ? alldata? prodemand ??

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars sheeshalready says:

Like most here, I am a DIY and can repair most things wrong with my cars and motorcycles, and own more tools than I can shake a stick at. However, it is not just the cost of the scope, or the expense of online service information, it is the learning curve when you would only break it out every so often. Then, well, I want a trained, honest mechanic like yourself to figure it out and do the repair.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tonyfremont says:

If nothing else, a scope will wake you up on just how horrid the automotive electrical environment is. Spikes, transients, fluctuations, noise etc all show up on a scope. Things transpire on the main 12v supply rail that, I think, most mechanics never dreamed of. All of that stuff has to be "absorbed" by sensors and computer modules, and they're expected to work around it.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Adon Lando says:

I missed it. What was the complaint and what was the resolution for the customer? Good video on the use of scopes.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J D says:

I have a verus pro and would like to see more instructional videos on how to properly use it especially with cam/crank sensors.

Takes me back to 1979 Eric , across the pond her in the UK with the old big yellow Krypton tuning machine , showing wave forms on plugs etc , time to spend some money, you've gotta be in it to win it as they say , great video Eric , take care

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kris N says:

We still have snap on counselor 2. Lol. It just works.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Albert's Auto Diagnostics LLC says:

    What picoscope do you recommend

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars danrandle 65 says:

Would love to have a scope.
However i only work on my own vehicles (i don't have a shop).
So the cost (1000.00+) doesn't justify the amount of time i would actually use it.
In fact the dakota in working on at the moment would be a great use for one. but like said would only be used very occasionally.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars paul abate says:

Eric these diagnostic videos are a good idea. So many times i heard mechanics say, like yourself they have 3 or 4 scan tools. I guess its time for a scope, if you have any money left after buying all those scan tools.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Brooks says:

    Excellent information
    Thank You.Takecare
    You are Great Technician

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steven Robertson says:

I have bought a new snap on scanner with scope and I'm getting the hang of using it. But there is just so many things in still trying to figure out what I'm looking at. If you where able to do more videos on scopes that would be awesome. I love watch you and your family. And look forward to all the new videos since I've watched them all.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg Blau says:

I would like to have a scope to help with proper diagnosis but I honestly wouldn’t know how to use it or what I’m looking at. I actually had an acadia a few months ago with 0035 & 0036 codes iirc and recommended pretty much the tear apart scenario you described based off the tsb.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Carlton Lane says:

Just starting scope use, always used outside //specialist//but there diagnosis not always right, now I’m 🥵,so watching you Ivan, and many more,I’m going to add to my own skills,????well I honest ,and hate being burned from outside specialists,
