In this video I show how I replace the fluid in filters in a Dodge Dakota 4x4 for a long lime SMA viewer. This should apply to the 45RFE and 545RFE automatic transmissions. This procedure is very similar to most automatics too. Be sure to check your shop manual for the correct procedure.

I'd put a drain plug in that sucker if I had the chance. I hope she keeps an eye on the water pump. These things chew up water pumps like bubble gum. If they leak the coolant down and the engine overheats a little, expect a whole slew of problems like head gasket, exhaust manifold & gasket, fuel injectors, and fouling plugs, maybe even dropped valve seat, all because the water pump leaks and you don't know it until it's gets a little too hot. It doesn't even have to go past the middle range, just slightly warmer than normal running temp. I speak from experience.

Back in the late '70s we used speed handles all the time to remove sheet metal panels on F-4 Phantoms.
Just use a new pan with drain plug, a felt gasket, soak it in trans oil, and tighten pan in crisscross pattern in 4 steps to max spec torque. No messy silicone cleanup ever again.
A real geek. Can't be too smart….bought a dodge.

I don't get it — you sucked the fluid out of the dipstick tube but the pan was still plum full and spilled fluid all over the place. How did that happen?

Worked in Chrysler Automatic Transmission Engineering for 36 years. We recommended running the RTV bead around the inward side of the bolt holes in the pan. This prevents oil from wicking through the bolt threads. Not a big deal, but stops what appears to be a leak around the pan rail.
next time put some trans fluid into oil filter.
At least it has a dipstick unlike my 2013 Town and country. Luckily Adv———- auto had one. Dealer did not have anyone smart enough to check it, according to them. They did tell me I had leaky coolant lines and offered to change them for $400. $49.00, at theRock, one you tube video And two careful hours later, job done. Also found green mold where a bundle had been slashed. Also tranny one quart low. Thank for emboldening me Eric although I have worked on cars for 55years.
I have a 02 3.9 v6 4wd auto, would it be exact same thing? Lower crossmember raise transfer case.
Could do video service transfer case replace the small driveshaft.
I always called it a speed handle.

Thanks for the awesome video. Necer done this service before on any car or truck I've owned. This video made the process a breeze. Since I did this in my driveway without a lift I used 2 boards and a scissor jack to line up my cross member. I used my drill with a wire wheel and cleaned up the inside and outside of both the member and frame. Shot it down with some WD-40 and cranked the jack and it went right into place. Used my "alignment" tool to help guide the bolt holes and job complete. Hope this trick helps save someone a whole lot of headache down the road.

I have been binging SMA videos. This one really brings me back to high school when I worked at an oil change shop and did a TON of transmission fluid changes…I learned with a speed wrench and have several in my tool box still today (over 30 years later).

Only negative is if you know you should have filled the filter why not do it so instead of take only a 70 percent chance of it not showing why not increase the odds to 100 percent

My filter came with a gasket. Do I just throw it away and use the form a gasket?
I've never understood why the OEM transmission oil pans don't come with a drain plug like some of the aftermarket replacement pans do. Is it to discourage consumers from simply changing their own ATF?

I forgot to seat my seal before installing the sump filter. All the gears are like neutral, no forward or reverse. Now I’m gonna have to do it all again, but this time I’ll remember to seat the seal. Thanks for the video. Now I know what I did wrong. Learning new things about transmissions all the time. You guys are great. By the way, I used a 1/4” drive and didn’t need to pull the transfer case support to access the rear bolts to the transmission pan.
When you brought up speed wrenches it reminds me of my dad and his giant speed wrench he had for his Farmall M tractors to take off the draw bar and put on the row cultivator or corn picker. It was almost four feet long and I think had a socket on the end that was either 1-1/4 or 1-3/8 inch. He called it "The Screw More" I actually have one that came with my Farmall 460 and I have the set of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 Screw Mores in my tool box that came with my Craftsman set back in the late '70s.
The only thing I would have done different is to clean the rust off of the bracket and bracket mount to make that slip in easier. I thought I've seen you do that on other vehicles.
