I've seen this many times over the years.
This would be the correct way IF you were backing up all the time.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Botnick says:

RTFM or at least glance at the pictures. A good mechanic spends a lot of time on the toilet, reading manuals and trade magazines.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Barbara Todd says:

Noticed my rear brake shoes were not self adjusting Turns out the previous owner put the self adjusters on the wrong side. It adjusted itself so far down it totally ground the teeth from the adjuster

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RJM says:

    I never knew.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars localcrew says:

I had an ‘86 F350 for many years and probably did rear brakes three or four times. Always had to adjust the brakes on one side as they wore. Finally I decided to stare at the problem until I figured it out. The little adjuster pawl thing wasn’t working on one side because the truck had two adjusters marked “L”. So the pawl was facing out away from the ratchet wheel on the right side. Sometimes ya just gotta stare at it for awhile.

Tell him in order to even them up he'll need to drive more in reverse! 🤭

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Stample says:

The front shoes always seem to wear down quicker, so it seems logical that the larger one would be in front. Good tip, I learned something.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Thomas says:

Yup that was the first thing that I noticed was that the shoes were not on in the correct position. Short shoe towards the front of the vehicle and long shoe goes towards the rear!

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Noson Fontenot says:

Only you would notice something like that 👍🏻. Great tip. Will keep an eye out.

    But when I do,

    I do it correctly.

Does that make sense? Probably not, 'cause I said it. Anyways move along and I hope you have a nice day.

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars LadyAnuB says:

There is no excuse to put shoes on backwards now due to the ubiquity of smart phones and their cameras. Take plenty of pictures as you disassemble the brakes so you don't have any excuse when reassembling the brakes or any other repair.

  51. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mdotguy says:

Interesting! Every car I have DIY has had equal identical symmetrical shoes. Never seen unequal length friction material. Gonna keep that in mind for the future!

  55. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J Dub says:

Big in the back…..learned that 30 years ago….!!!🙂🙂

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Oakhill says:

I have now spent a half hour, and Google images, Amazon, and Wikipedia all show shoes where both look identical to me. It is still a mystery what Eric O thought was so obvious that a two minute video was enough to make the point.

  57. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phillip Banes says:

Damn, all that rust. That's criminal what the state does to people's cars. New Yorkers should be compensated for that. My car here in CA is 7 years old and no rust.

  63. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Gabbert says:

    Big back side 👍🤷‍♂️

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Oakhill says:

What does "the big shoe" mean? Sorry, but I have no idea what is so obviously visible to those with experienced, trained, eyes. I see no difference between the two. What am I supposed to be looking for?

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Javier Acevedo says:

I have a jeep liberty that has drum and disc brakes on the rear and the backing plate for the hardware kit was broken and i had to cut it off with a saw on both sides because it was clacking like mad. I had no idea how expensive the rear backing plate was, they are 300$-500$ for both. Its crazy, but since the drum brake is for the emergency brake cable i just left the wheel speed sensors and removed the cable out of the way and now it runs fine but it doesn't have an emergency brake.

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars justin watch says:

Just convert it to disc and don't worry about it

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eric Schmidt says:

That had to be grabby backing up

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Flight Forensics says:

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sam Robinson says:

Yep this bit me in the backside years ago when I first started turning wrenches.lost money on that job. And got cussed out. Even though the customer was the last one before me to put brakes on his truck….

If you’re a real mechanic you already know where everything goes!!!!! If you don’t your in the wrong profession

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Ulicky says:

I got bit like that once. Luckily I figured it out before the vehicle left the shop.

  73. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Monte Stu says:

I thought you were going to say the springs are on wrong as they look really goofy to me. I’ve never owned a Jeep though.

  74. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jay Judd says:

Good tip I had no idea there was a big shoe .

  75. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jim G says:

I have also seen the fronts on one side and rears on the other. Very good advice as usual Eric. I truly enjoy your videos always great training and wealth of information. Thank you for what you do!

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Shared Knowledge says:

I get the desire to want to eek out more YouTube revenue by selling your soul to the evil data collecting monster known as Google but the whole shorts thing is just Google trying to catch up to TikTok years too late in typical Google fashion. And from what I’ve seen the revenue is generally too low to be worth it unless you’re really desperate. You have a great day job and great longer videos. Why succumb to Google’s latest carrot on a stick?

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sam Bradley says:

    The man speaks the truth

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thomas Straulina says:

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars michael shampine says:

Great point! How many many times I seen this exact thing done.

  82. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rice Burner says:

    👍👍👍👍👍👍

  84. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars The513Warning says:

My car's shoes are both the same size. Also, drum brakes are a pain in the ass.

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars K V says:

The first car I ever bought when I was 15 had brand new drum brakes on the rear. The only problem was the drivers side had 2 primary shoes (it was really easy to get the drum off) and the passenger side had 2 secondary shoes (nearly impossible to get off). I switched things around and it was perfect. I learned a lot about drum brakes on that car.

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars f150 man says:

If time travel was real most people would go back and play the lottery or bet on sports…. not me I'd find the guy who invented drums brakes and express my displeasure with their over complication. I've done a lot in my 30yrs of working on vehicles (16yrs professionally) and its the one thing I loathe.

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Harffman says:

Years ago my brother bought a used mustang . He told me the one rear brake was locking up. Well I took it apart and someone managed to put both the rear shoes ( large ) on one side and the small shoes ( front ) on the other side

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David from Texas says:

But it’s Thursday, not Friday Eric 🤡

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars thousand points of light says:

so, what you're saying is, maybe we should get ase certified and use the service manual, right?

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Edward Warwick says:

That's right , primary and secondary. Big shoe to the back!

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Shadetree America says:

I saw what you pointed out and also noticed the hardware is not all there. The small cable that hooks up to the finger that holds the star wheel adjustor in place appears to not be there also.
    Anyone else notice that??

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Will W says:

    Very true.
I could not tell you how many air brake shoes I replaced with missing spring. Some of these mechanics also are lazy and they just don't care about putting all of the springs on. The shoes end up dragging without all of the springs.

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Philly Dee says:

😳Wait….so the brakes lasted that long on backwards🤣must of been high quality brakes😉

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Allim Khan says:

A lot of mechanics make mistakes when installing drum brakes good point great video!!!!

  95. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DTWMTX 2011 says:

Seen it right away. Brake shoes are like Funny Car tires. Big ones in back.

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Foster says:

I like going with brake shoes that are riveted to the backing plate, the one's that are glued on tend to come apart when getting hot, doesn't happen all the time.

  97. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars j w says:

It's a jeep thing, you wouldn't understand. He obviously needed better brakes when backing up

  98. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TCI FUSION says:

DONT ROAST THE POOR GUY!!!!!! JUST SMOKE HIM……….GOOD ONE SIR…..

  99. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Windsor says:

Reminds me of a certain other Youtuber who installed the calipers on the wrong sides with the bleeders pointing down, then wondered why he couldn't bleed all the air out.

  100. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars terry harvey says:

Other side backward also ?? Wondered if he got passenger side right and said well the long shoe is on my left hand side facing the car so.on the drivers side long shoe needs to be on my left hand side facing the car. Thus wrong there.
