In this video I talk about some of the frustrations of following up after other "shops" work. It is very discouraging to me to see such shoddy work and complete disregard for customers vehicles. Knifing, hackin' and whackin'. Sure, it's ok to get into a harness, it's ok to poke a wire to do your tests. We all do it, we have to in some cases. FIX IT WHEN YOU ARE DONE! Please... and thank you. I see it a lot in your videos of other shops bringing in vehicles to you, makes me feel bad about the customers. You are going to fix the car and charge the other shop x amount and then they charge more x amount to the customers.
I very much enjoy watching your videos. You are a great diagnostician with the ability and scruples to logically find the problem, fix it, and repair or note any problems you find along the way, including anything you introduced in testing along the way. You seem to be like me, in that a vehicle "talks" to me. That is why you are able to pinpoint a problem. It's not just luck or experience; it's because the vehicle "tells" you where to go. Kudos to you and I hope you continue to produce such quality and informative videos. 👍

i've watched 50 of eric's videos trying to figure out why he manages to get results where everybody else fails……in the end it just boils down to natural talent combined with a genuine sincere interest in his subject material…….a lot of it also comes from good early tutoring and mentoring by his father…..eric has a feel for cars much like mark knopfler has a feel for guitars, there's a natural aptitude and an energy that hates failure and defeat……250 years ago eric would have been a highly successful freemason cutting hewn stone decorative blocks perfectly to size and then setting them into cathedral walls 60 feet off the ground

My impression is that a significant number of mechanics cannot figure out the complex electrical systems of todays cars and trucks and start poking around (literally) in a sad attempt to find the problem by accident.
Always good to find wetness on the first try. Ask me how I know.
I worked on a house that was like that. Whoever the guy before me was, I don't suspect it was the homeowner. I'm pretty sure it was someone the owner knew that said they could get their lights working.. .

Man I gotta say your really good at diag….I spend a lot of time fixing issues like this and it drives me crazy….. nobody cares to do the right thing anymore….crimp connections are obsolete on most repair scenarios…..solder and heat shrink with proper wire management is the way…..exactly what scan tool and other line equipment do you use? I've always had the most basic stuff anywhere I've worked and I'm kinda jealous lol

i hate poking a wire or even back probing a wire! seen techs that will just run a strand wire to fix and issue (ive done it too) but god do i hate that! find where and fix the why to solve your problem when you can!
I have found that small bandage scissors, the kind with the little blunt ball on the one blade, work well for opening harnesses.
To play devils advocate for a moment: This was clearly still in the testing and troubleshooting phase of a repair. They were still hunting for the problem. (Maybe a better mechanic would have found it sooner but whatever) Then with whatever the situation with the owner happens and the truck is whisked away from the other shop. This is not necessarily representative of what the other shops finished product is. They may have gone back and cleaned it up after they found the solution.
Not saying that IS the case, but I would hate my work to be judged based on what it looks like midway through the process.
Pull the fuse and disconnect the module. Connect a tone generator to the wire and quickly find the break just by swiping down the harness.

devil's advocate…at least for the loose tape, clips, that sorta thing. they knew they couldn't find the problem and they were bringing it over to you. rather than button everything back up, they were trying to make your diagnostic job easier. that doesn't excuse some of the wire probing stuff, but you said yourself that you found the issue within 20 minutes because of the loose harness.
This is exactly why I try to repair my own vehicles. Things around the house are the same thing, no one takes pride in their work anymore. Even the place I work, we have mechanics who are lazy and hacks. There's a couple good one's who'll troubleshoot though
