The auxiliary battery just powers the general and control systems. Starting in hybrid Toyotas is from the main power battery via the secondary motor-generator and the epicyclic gear. There is no separate starter motor. The "motor" of the motor-generator does that job. No aux power equals no control system, which does make life a bit tedious.
Those Toyota hybrid batteries have 328cca according to a Toyota parts website

Toyota hybrids primarily rely on the 12v to power the computer…. The hybrid pack is responsible for starting the engine….. And when the battery that powers all the computers is low voltage, you get all kinds of weird lights on the dash. Vsc, abs, etc. Poor installer at Best Buy thought he broke our car installing a stereo because he drained the 12v down by leaving the door open.

Ray, I have a question for you. I have always been told to never leave a battery sitting on concrete as it will drain and kill the cells. So I always put it on a 2×8 board if I have to take it out of my vehicle. Will concrete really do that to a battery? Just curious. Never tried it to see because batteries are not cheap and don't want to waste money in order to find out, lol.
Ants in cars sucks. I had parked my old car for a while, and when I was getting ready to sell it, we noticed that it had been infested with ants. A lot of ants. That wasn't a fun problem to fix.

That type of battery is a J.I.S battery specifically designed for hybrid vehicles and can only be tested with a tester compatible with a JIS battery.

Ray, the temperature sensor is actually removeable. peel off the top battery label and you'll see the thermistor glued there. you can re-attach it to the side of new battery. you'll also need a vent adapter since the original ones was slightly bigger

The one thing I found peculiar, is that any vehicle I've worked on with a remote mounted battery, has jumper points near the engine, to connect jump start leads to.

Hybrids are an entirely different breed of vehicle. There is almost never CCA on the battery because the battery doesn't do any cranking. instead, the 12v just needs enough juice to engage the relay to the larger battery pack and the electric motor uses that to spin the engine to start it. I think, in my 2010 Prius, the battery was something like, 440 CCA?
No alternator in these either, it uses a DC/DC converter to pull power from the main pack to charge the little battery. The reason for the two battery system is to protect the larger, more expensive and harder to charge (due to high voltage) battery from draining all the way. So the relay disconnects the main battery so it can't be drained and relies on the much easier to charge or replace 12v to connect it to the system.
In a lot of ways, it's nice, there are less mechanical parts to go wrong. No starter, no alternator and the things that replaced them are a bit more robust and long lasting, so shouldn't ever need to be replaced outside of either a defect or a very long usage time. Downside, if they do go bad, they're not cheap or easy to replace. Personally, I drove my 2010 Prius up to 242,000 miles before I gave it to my sister and all I ever had to replace were wheel hubs, 12v once, brakes twice (last a long time if you use mostly regen braking) and a PCV valve. I have a 2016 at 140,000 miles, only thing I've replaced on that is 1 wheel hub and a half-shaft. I had a shop check the brakes on it during my last maintenance and they said the pads looked almost new. They were shocked when I told them they were original XD.

So that car didnt have jumper connectors under the hood? My 2011 HHR has them. The owner isnt a very clean person, ants in the car along with an old drink cup. And bags of underwear in the trunk. And I saw the liquid puddle move in the trunk when you removed the old battery. Trashy car.

I agree that the Battery may be bad…. If you are only going to give yourself an hour and a half, just put a straight charge on it. Give it a test and decide if you want to perform a Recondition on it. In Recondition Mode, (depending on the Charger) it may give it a quick high amperage Charge for a short time…. It may not. All Chargers in Recondition Mode will Discharge the Battery and Recharge at various rates to clean the Plates (or cycle the AGM "Memory") and provide a better charge. You must wait for the process to complete before testing. The shortest time I have seen a Recon process happen is 6 Hours. On bigger Batteries, I have seen 3 days. I am not saying your Battery was good or bad, I am saying that your Test (in this case) is wrong. You can not test a Discharged Battery, you also can not randomly stop a Recon Mode because you have no idea where it is at. It may have Discharged and just started Charging…

I had a customer bring in a 08 cobalt that had so much stuff in it I couldn't get to anything but sit in the seat. The whole trunk and other seats full of God knows what. Car stunk so bad. I wore a mask and gloves to even drive the car and yea I made sure the customer saw me.

My dad had an old camper trailer that hadn't been used for at least 10 years. when I went to move it, I found that it was full of carpenter ants. they were devouring the plywood in the floor and walls. I ended up selling it to someone who was going to use the frame and scrap the body. he ended up making it into a fishing shack after getting rid of the ants.

Most shops force their techs to work on every piece of crap that comes in…I worked at a government agency where we inspected vehicles. Initially, We had no ability to reject a vehicle for being nasty. Well the inspectors started documenting all of the issues we had to endure daily…. The biggest issue was human phlegm. Yes, snot hanging from the sun visors, rear view mirrors etc., chew spit on the seats and floor and in some instances urine, yes piss in the driver seat. Finally got a written directive allowing us to reject vehicles as a bio hazard. I actually sat in a driver seat that was wet with piss…. The piss dried and it was crusty and stank. I was allowed to go and bathe, change on the employers time… it got bad…

Ray you can’t just clear the codes and expect it good because they don’t immediately reset, a lot of codes even hard faults are 2 trip faults, turn the key on 10 seconds off 10 seconds and repeat

Not making excuses for them as I don't know how they live… but knowing that this shop is in Florida, and my roommate and myself also live in Florida, the ants in the car may not be because of the filth in the car. My roommate work as a sitter for an elderly man in a home, and where he parked his car was just on a sandy area and probably near an ant hill/mound. For awhile we seen quite a few ants running around in the car and that's even with the car free from food and clutter. Since he's no longer parking in that spot the ants have vanished and we've not seen a one in around a year… so while it's possible because of the left over coffee drink cups, etc. it may not be the exact cause.
I used to have a Lexus Hybrid … If I failed to turn it off it would drain my battery. It was so quiet it was easy to do. My newer non hybrid Lexus automatically turns off if I leave the accessory on. Not sure why the Lexus hybrid didn’t do the same.

Thing about some hybrids — Hondas anyway — is that the 12 volt battery only runs the electronics and, in an emergency, starts the engine. Otherwise the high voltage does the starting itself.
