Did you check to see if the tappet clearance fell in the oil pan? ๐
Interesting… Let me ask: are those R and L EXACTLY 180ยบ apart? to the tooth or valley?
I need to point out, if they are on the wrong side, and you rotate the crank 360ยบ, the cam gears will rotate exactly 180ยบ, and the marks will again be magically on the correct sides again! (Don't do this if it's not timed yet!).
I assume the head marks do not necessarily translate identically from side to side, or they would not need these indexing side marks…
I could see this confounding someone that times it correctly, rotates it several times to check it, and then alarmingly sees that the marks don't line up, and that the sides are now marked wrong! LOL
[Every other crankshaft revolution will line up right again…]
Am I correct?
I have worked on these engines but not timed them. I have done Audi's and BMW's. ๐ฎ

if my memory serves me right you can only put them on the cam one way so the timing marks are then up to you at that point just like you explained in this video im. a really big fan of the this engine it has its problems but once fixed itโs really a good design and very reliable the 4.6 3v is really nice also

Not picking on your audience but if you are in the auto repair business left & right is viewed from behind the steering wheel. I'm Glade you have the patience to explain your work methods. When I went to school if I made a statement about left or right I would have been told you must have been absent the "FIRST DAY OF CLASS".Keep up the great work.
Also that is an interference engine number one it would not have fired and run number to it would have been about half or more of the valves as soon as you turn the motor over. Good job Ray
You Made an entire video just to clear the air because people werenโt paying attention, or werenโt knowledgeable enough to begin with to not worry about it? Well that is humble of you but if it were me, the video wouldโve been five seconds long, with a close-up on my upturned middle finger next to the running engine that I timed correctly.
My tolerance for people in general is already dangerously low, I think if I hosted a YouTube channel it would plummet into the negative and I would be forever bitter and jaded for the rest of my life. Oh wait I think I already am both of those.
Anyhow I donโt watch your channel very often because I live in the rust belt, aka salt belt, aka the Midwestโ so whenever I need a DIY video Iโm generally in 20 other channels from similar locationsโBut I give respect where itโs due.

An engine rebuild or even a timing chain repair is a minefield of ways to mess up, if you don't do this every day. As you say, a mistake there would likely give instant feedback, ha ha.

You always view an engine or electric motor standing behind it. That dictates left,right,forward and back. Ask any millwright,mechanic or engineer.

I have noticed that buying parts some sites will say left drivers side right passenger side. I'm guessing some people might have been getting the wrong side parts when it mastered which side, so parts sellers started using left and also drivers side. I could be full of you know what too. Your videos are always great and have taught me a lot. I quit working on cars for a while 90's too 2011 I couldn't find very many of what I called "real cars". I started working on cars in 67 so I knew a little and learned as I went, but when they started with the computer bs I stayed away until I had to start learning again. Sorry about the rant.

If I had taken something apart like that ,and I wouldn't because I'm not a mechanic. But if I did ,I would be taken pictures with phone every step of the way to make sure it went back right .
I was always confused on what side is considered right or left standing in front of vehicle or sitting inside . So I just say passenger side front or back and driver's side front or back .
I've often wondered why the left/right terminology is so prevalent. Why not drivers side or passenger side to save ambiguity?
If the armchair mechanics would have been watching better in the video they would have seen one of the cam gears laying flat ,when you were inspecting them, the L and R was in plain sight. Nuf said.
That's why I like to say port and starboard. Was a boat mechanic for a bit. Great videos enjoy watching on my lunch break

Great series Ray. I got one of these motors in my Fairmont here in Australia coming up for 220,000kms and never been opened to my knowledge. I have these chains and phasers can be an issue at times. Itโs been good to see what I might be up for down the track and why. Cheers mate.
It was the camera I looked at that part of the video again it was right. Glad you posted this video that way people knew you had it the right way.
Watched the whole series of videos on this. This summer, a friend is diving in deep doing the same thing on his F 150. He wants me to help him by keeping an eye on what he is doing. The one thing I will not forget is the vacuum hose for the master cylinder. And WOW, if you screwed this up, the truck sure runs well. Excellent work, and I hope it didn't make you pull all your hair out. Thank you for the great series.

Left and right ON A VEHICLE are always determined from the drivers seat, it is NEVER determined from where you are standing. Front and back are always determined from the drivers seat as if you are driving. People are stupid. I have had to explain this once or twice. Keep doing what you do and ignore the idiots.
