Did you check to see if the tappet clearance fell in the oil pan? 🙃

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars troubleshooter1975 says:

Interesting… Let me ask: are those R and L EXACTLY 180º apart? to the tooth or valley?
I need to point out, if they are on the wrong side, and you rotate the crank 360º, the cam gears will rotate exactly 180º, and the marks will again be magically on the correct sides again! (Don't do this if it's not timed yet!).
I assume the head marks do not necessarily translate identically from side to side, or they would not need these indexing side marks…

I could see this confounding someone that times it correctly, rotates it several times to check it, and then alarmingly sees that the marks don't line up, and that the sides are now marked wrong! LOL
[Every other crankshaft revolution will line up right again…]

    Am I correct?
I have worked on these engines but not timed them. I have done Audi's and BMW's. 😮

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Allen Tusing says:

Ray, is there any 5.4 you would own?

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jason Crandall says:

Hats off to you Ray & how you handle all the complainers! 👍🏻

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars condor414 says:

People should have to pass an IQ test before being allowed to post.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MDP1 says:

if my memory serves me right you can only put them on the cam one way so the timing marks are then up to you at that point just like you explained in this video im. a really big fan of the this engine it has its problems but once fixed it’s really a good design and very reliable the 4.6 3v is really nice also

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matthew Curschmann says:

    Dummies!

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Collins says:

Not picking on your audience but if you are in the auto repair business left & right is viewed from behind the steering wheel. I'm Glade you have the patience to explain your work methods. When I went to school if I made a statement about left or right I would have been told you must have been absent the "FIRST DAY OF CLASS".Keep up the great work.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Monte Jones says:

Also that is an interference engine number one it would not have fired and run number to it would have been about half or more of the valves as soon as you turn the motor over. Good job Ray

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Christoph Richter says:

You Made an entire video just to clear the air because people weren’t paying attention, or weren’t knowledgeable enough to begin with to not worry about it? Well that is humble of you but if it were me, the video would’ve been five seconds long, with a close-up on my upturned middle finger next to the running engine that I timed correctly.
My tolerance for people in general is already dangerously low, I think if I hosted a YouTube channel it would plummet into the negative and I would be forever bitter and jaded for the rest of my life. Oh wait I think I already am both of those.
Anyhow I don’t watch your channel very often because I live in the rust belt, aka salt belt, aka the Midwest— so whenever I need a DIY video I’m generally in 20 other channels from similar locations—But I give respect where it’s due.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Corbeano says:

But the Youtube mechanic is never wrong….

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alfredo Velez says:

    you are 100 right………………………………………

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars spelunkerd says:

An engine rebuild or even a timing chain repair is a minefield of ways to mess up, if you don't do this every day. As you say, a mistake there would likely give instant feedback, ha ha.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Morris says:

Are you sure that the people sitting at home being armchair mechanics don’t know more than you about what you do for a living? 🧐🧐😂

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 77 Zrod says:

You always view an engine or electric motor standing behind it. That dictates left, right, forward and back. Ask any millwright, mechanic or engineer.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph Steffen says:

That's actually funny. "Sorry, not this time." "Try again". Being stupid sucks.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars None Ya says:

I have noticed that buying parts some sites will say left drivers side right passenger side. I'm guessing some people might have been getting the wrong side parts when it mastered which side, so parts sellers started using left and also drivers side. I could be full of you know what too. Your videos are always great and have taught me a lot. I quit working on cars for a while 90's too 2011 I couldn't find very many of what I called "real cars". I started working on cars in 67 so I knew a little and learned as I went, but when they started with the computer bs I stayed away until I had to start learning again. Sorry about the rant.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Powell says:

You're normally so finaky applying sealent etc, I couldn't believe it when you squaged that red goo on the filter… I started laughing when you twated the nut with the cold steel. "into the soft aluminum" funny man

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eddy Anderson says:

Yea ray they need an oil change from ya. You no that oil change.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cliff Scheckler says:

If I had taken something apart like that ,and I wouldn't because I'm not a mechanic. But if I did ,I would be taken pictures with phone every step of the way to make sure it went back right .

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cliff Scheckler says:

I was always confused on what side is considered right or left standing in front of vehicle or sitting inside . So I just say passenger side front or back and driver's side front or back .

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jess Donovan says:

I've often wondered why the left/right terminology is so prevalent. Why not drivers side or passenger side to save ambiguity?

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bruce Garrett says:

If the armchair mechanics would have been watching better in the video they would have seen one of the cam gears laying flat ,when you were inspecting them, the L and R was in plain sight. Nuf said.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ASE - Ask Someone Else says:

That's why I like to say port and starboard. Was a boat mechanic for a bit. Great videos enjoy watching on my lunch break

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank Portigiano says:

These keyboard warriors… lmao…. what putz

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cy Wulf says:

Amazing how people think they know more than others. I hope they see this and shut the hell up!

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars InfoRanker says:

It wasn’t me, I don’t even know what those things are.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheFutureIsImpenetrable says:

    Thanks Ray. Interesting.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve C says:

Why clear it up? Let them think what they will! 😂😂😂

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars swoopulater says:

don't ya just love those keyboard mechanics? (in deference to 'keyboard cowboys') 😉
my question is, did they make their posts before you finished? i'm assuming they did since the actual engine start didn't happen till the next video.
Bet they were sitting there scratching their heads after watching that final video eh?
All kidding aside though, you did a nice job on that ray, congrats 👍

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Seafarer Bones says:

That’s more messed up than Kanye’s panties

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Christopher Marshall says:

WRONG!!! WRONG!!! WRONG!!! LEFT AND RIGHT ARE DETERMINED BY SITTING IN THE CAR, & LOOKING FORWARD!! RIGHT SIDE IS LEFT WHEN LOOKING FROM FRONT OF CAR!! L&R R ARE NOT DETERMINED BY LOOKING FROM FRONT OF CAR!!! SOME V8 ENGINES HAVE THEIR CYLINDER NUMBERS AS 1-4 on RIGHT BANK, LOOKING FORWARD FROM REAR OF CAR, NOT LOOKING TO REAR FROM FRONT!! DOING IT LOOKING TO REAR FROM FRONT OF CAR IN THIS CASE WILL RESULT IN WRONG CYLINDER BEING LABELLED AS CYLINDER 1. BANKS OF CYLINDERS ARE ALWAYS DETERMINED BY LOOKING FORWARD FROM REAR OF CAR, NEVER EVER LOOKING BACK FROM FRONT OF CAR!!

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John T. says:

Some people just don't know their left from their right, I guess mirrors confuse them too.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rob Peabo says:

OMG! I cant believe you had to explain that Ray. It is clear as daylight you installed all the parts correctly. You did a great job on the engine mate, a great job. And you take the time to video & explain what you are doing. Keep it up!

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jimmy B says:

It's always made me laugh that.
You tell someone their LHF indicator is out, and they know exactly which of the 4 indicator bulbs is dead.
    Open the bonnet… LOST!

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Keith Bassett says:

U da man, Ray!. Thank u for schooling those who are not even novices. And you did it with professionalism and respect. Mad props to you, boi.👍

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Douglas Cake says:

I think if you had got it wrong. There would not have been an engine start. Not even as rough as when you first started it. And that was a vacuum line,

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dontae D says:

dude dont listen to video mechanics

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars BlutRoyale54 says:

I mean the engine started, idled smoothly, has power throughout the powerband and no dtc's popped up 🤷‍♂️ sounds indexed properly to me

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars P Steph says:

Great series Ray. I got one of these motors in my Fairmont here in Australia coming up for 220,000kms and never been opened to my knowledge. I have these chains and phasers can be an issue at times. It’s been good to see what I might be up for down the track and why. Cheers mate.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Troy Allen says:

It was the camera I looked at that part of the video again it was right. Glad you posted this video that way people knew you had it the right way.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RONSPOTZ says:

Watched the whole series of videos on this. This summer, a friend is diving in deep doing the same thing on his F 150. He wants me to help him by keeping an eye on what he is doing. The one thing I will not forget is the vacuum hose for the master cylinder. And WOW, if you screwed this up, the truck sure runs well. Excellent work, and I hope it didn't make you pull all your hair out. Thank you for the great series.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Russell Booth says:

Yeah, they're the people who just thought that I was ready for the garbage 🗑️ bin in Australia !

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Doug J. says:

Ain’t it funny the keyboard guy knows more than the guy that does it for a living.
It amazes me how many people don’t realize that the left and right on a vehicle is fixed, just because you stand in front of the vehicle the left is always the driver side.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rohan hooker says:

Yea but now shes doing 60mph going backwards 🤣🤣.
Na seriously. Spot on right side bank is on left when looking inwards👍👍

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Wilson says:

Can we all agree the reason that anyone is concerned with the cam phaser orientation on a 5.4L Ferd is that you are fixing it instead of scrapping it. Its a turd.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Warren Self says:

Those are some filthy parts. No wonder it needed a timing job.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Law says:

🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Armchair and keyboard mechanics at it again ….Reeeeeeeeeee ROFLMAO

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rod X says:

Ray, game peeps game, I know what you are saying. The ones that stated you did wrong are the ones that bring you a broke truck and a box of "optional equipment" then tell you how to do it after they did it first and bent the valves.

Left and right ON A VEHICLE are always determined from the drivers seat, it is NEVER determined from where you are standing. Front and back are always determined from the drivers seat as if you are driving. People are stupid. I have had to explain this once or twice. Keep doing what you do and ignore the idiots.
