  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J Bussey says:

I've got a coolant filter on the 05 F250 diesel I drive. The reason why is because the 6.0's were prone to having excessive remnants of casting materials (i.e. engine sediment or engine sand). These excessive materials are also prone to clogging & potentially damaging the bottom end tank of the radiator (which hints the Mishimoto Radiator in the truck in this video), clogging & damaging the EGR Cooler, clogging & damaging the oil cooler. The oil cooler has both oil and coolant passing through the same unit and the coolant & oil passages can be prone to breaking thus resulting in coolant mixing with the engine oil caused primarily by blockage in the coolant passages from said engine sand or metallic materials in the oil passages.

But it's not uncommon for coolant filters to be utilized by diesel engines. You'll see quite a few Class 8 Semi Trucks equipped with a coolant filter.

Also note that if a 6.0 is low on coolant.. pull EGR Valve and inspect for Black Toothpaste (i.e. coolant soaked soot). If there's indications of such the EGR Cooler is done. Another way of a 6.0 to lose coolant is blown headgasket (not uncommon if running a tune while still utilizing stock headgaskets and head bolts).

Here's hoping it doesn't return. I'll vouch that the 6.0 are riddled with its fair share of hydra morphing gremlins. You resolve one another surfaces like a bad rash.

sigh enough of my informative rant. I really enjoy your videos Ray. Keep it up man👍✌️

I am not a mechanic. I know enough to be dangerous. That said, I really find your videos informative, and entertaining. Something that's rare for videos on the old tube. You have loads more patience than I do, I think if I were doing that particular repair, I would be using f-bombs like commas. Keep up the good work.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Pilgrim says:

You can cut those metal crimp sleeves off of those T fittings like that, replace the hose, and put a standard hose clamp on it. I hate those ford a/c lines. They are always easy to connect together until you replace a line in a tight spot. That’s when you get an aftermarket line that doesn’t want to click past the spring and makes you want to throw something.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nick Snarski says:

That coolant filter deal is supposed to help keep the oil cooler coolant side from getting plugged up.Waste of money IMHO

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scott M says:

The coolant filter is common on heavy trucks and busses. Besides filtering, they often have a cake of coolant conditioner that slowly dissolves over time. You know if it is present in a new filter because you can shake it and hear it bounce around inside the filter.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dale Scribner says:

Really admire your work ethic. You methodically take things apart without swearing at engineers. Good job.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob V says:

I have a 6.0 and I use the coolant filter. Ford has a specific coolant that can over time can break down and form solids in the system, the coolant goes thru the oil cooler on top of the engine and if the solid are formed in the coolant it will clog the oil cooler and self destruct the engine. SO THE FILTER IS JUST A SAFETY THING.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JoeZ732 says:

Notice no base oil pressure on instrument cluster while cranking. Georotor / front cover worn or it sucked a needle bearing from lifter.
Could also be / more likely to be bleeding high pressure oil from a small tear or break in the IPR screen in the HPOP. Common.
Check ICP while cranking. Needs 550psi or better to run and IPR duty between 15 to 85%
If long crank with engine already hot after sitting 5 or 10 mins, then Dummy plugs in HPO rails atop injectors.
10mm heads on the dummy plugs / stand pipes came from Navistar. 12mm is the revision.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars william meszko says:

    Ray,
Previous tech did NOT remove and replace the orfice tube, instead jamming the replacement orfice tube into the suction line where it did nothing. If the OE orfice tube (which should have been replaced but wasn't), was partially blocked, it likely led to the demise of the replacement compressor.
I'm amazed at all of the crap under the hood of a vehicle which should be easy to work on. Just awful.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Stonacek says:

The coolant filter is used on the 6.0 to filter out sand and rust and also scale that comes from the Ford coolant as it passes through the EGR cooler and gets the oil cooler plugged up then oil temps will go sky high while towing. You will find this to be a very common ad on for the 6.0 Ford diesels

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary D says:

I run a water filter on my 2001 dodge diesel always have, back in the day many people did, At one time it was a roll of tp in a can amazing how it works good that filter might need changed out as no dripping filter probably clogged

What is the point in repairing anything on a 6.0?

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars George Reiss says:

Early 6.0l engines had casting sand left in crevices in the block. The safety net was to put in a coolant filter just incase some sand found its way into the coolant over time.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Hitchcock says:

The hard start of the diesel is because of the high pressure oil pump. It is by passing and not letting it build up pressure to provide fuel to the injectors

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Brown says:

Nothing like spending a hour trying to get to something without spending the 30 minutes to remove stuff. LOL

    Truck is a nice citrus-y colour. 😁

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alex Bachmann says:

The cat filter is to get casting sand out of the coolant 6.0s are notorious for it and anything to help the coolers not getting plugged helps also most 6.0s that have had work the radiator shroud gets cut and there’s two screws holding it together pull screws take top half of shroud off belt then becomes a breeze without taking hoses and pipes off

Call me dumb, but why are there two sides to the clutch switch connector? I mean, isn't one side of the compressor already grounded through the block, needing only a +12 signal from the panel switch to turn the compressor on?

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars steve mitchell says:

look like that fan shroud has seen better days

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim McLaughlin says:

The coolant filtration kit is sold by Sinister Diesel n after changing out heads, head gaskets, egr cooler (cracked- they all do eventually) the oil filtration is a cheap preventative measure. Look up catastrophic 6.0l engine designs n you find the egr cooler n oil cooler are its Achilles heel.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 1abcrr1 says:

    The job from hell

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim McLaughlin says:

Coolant filter is a great adder to save the egr cooler n oil cooler under the intake on the 6.0l time bombs from engine coolant breakdown due to overheating from EGR gases. The next best thing for the 6.0 powerchoke is a totally external oil cooler from Sinister Diesel.

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars steve mitchell says:

it should just use the o rings that hold it in but the ones I have see go in line down by the evap and will that kit have high and low pressure switch

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars N6DL says:

    low pressure cutoff sw.. bad?

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rob Mut says:

  73. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andrew Smith says:

Did you forget to fill the radiator

  74. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars steve mitchell says:

you need a set of big wrench 1in to 2 in 19mm to 36 mm

  75. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jonathan Williams says:

That would be a bypass style coolant filter. They usually contain additional coolant conditioners and anti-electrolysis additives

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Troy Hoover says:

Coolant filters, huge thing for 6.0 powerstroke, can't remember why but 6.0s struggle with A. Keeping coolant clean. B. Running contaminated coolant. Comes with the majority of "bulletproof" upgrade kits with the headstuds, oil cooler, bluespring kit, and egr delete. Just a nice product for longevity. He has also actually had atleast some sort of aftermarket work an could explain the filter as well, is that very nice Mishimoto radiator alot of us use on our 6.0s that are either more jacked up on mountain dew than Ricky Bobby's kids, or our hard worked trucks because they do cool a decent positive difference an its nice to say Aloha to plastic end tanks, an I don't mean "hello"

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars blackwolf8281 says:

I can easily see that this is one of those vehicles you don't want to see again😂.. But you have caught the problems that others missed. Great job Ray!! Your commentary is fun to list to😁.. God bless brother..
    Have a great day!!😎

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars steve mitchell says:

its a coolant conditioner like nowcool and it dos act like a filter

  79. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Chan says:

That coolant filter is aftermarket. It's for filtering out debris to prevent clogging up the oil cooler.

  80. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars AJ Wilson says:

Ray, check the A/C compressor clutch relay and fuse/breaker. With a damaged clutch it might have shorted to ground internally destroying the relay or popping the fuse/breaker. Had this happen on a '96 Taurus years ago.

  83. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jefferyramsey ramsey says:

    Filter is a water conditioner

  84. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lee B says:

The 6 Blow had terrible EGR coolers among a host of other problems. Many people believe you could filter trash from the cooler and not have it rupture. Problem was the 6.0 was entirely trash and no filter existed to fix that. Believe me I had one. The only problem I did not have was the blown head gaskets. I feel like I dodged that because I wouldn’t put a chip on it. I don’t feel like it was entirely Fords fault it seems most issues with all diesel trucks stem from EPA mandatory systems. Such as EGR and DEF systems.

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Legion says:

I normally do not fit into any rubbers…. Giggity

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scott Finkel says:

    Ray,

I do know why that coolant filter is there I use to work on six.joke (6.0) they where notorious for have silica entering the cooling system for the engine block and it wear the oil cooler with what I have experienced with. They are very common add on with the 6.0 community the cat filter has more filter abilities. I remember I had a truck come in that dealer would repair the truck because the the filter was added on to it and caused the oil cooler to fail and get coolant in to the oil system. The filter just like any common semi engine the have cooler filter to catch any FM and silica that may enter the semi for the engine block or other components

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Huttman says:

Check and fix that ridiculous ground cable with the bolt running through it to the frame. Like WTF is that!

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ed Watts says:

That fan clutch uses a magnetorheological fluid to engage the fan when electrical power is applied.

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeremiah Prestegard says:

The coolant filter is there to delay the inevitable oil cooler failure these trucks are notorious for. The idea is that since it is a liquid to liquid type cooler a filter will help the coolant side of the cooler from getting plugged up and bursting. Alot of people will also add secondary oil filters to their 6.0 ford's. I have neither on my truck.

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Billy Bynum says:

It’s not a filter, it contains coolant conditioner additive. Semi trucks have them and it’s sagested to periodically check the conditioning level of the coolant and you open or close the valves on the element base as needed.

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tony Stanton says:

That Orifice tube was in the wrong line in the old system

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeffrey Aikens says:

Back some time ago, h/d diesels ran filters on the coolant system. 1) To catch impurities. 2) The filters came with an additive to help prevent cavitation damage to cylinder liners.

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeremiah Prestegard says:

I totally love this…. everything you are doing to this truck I have totally experienced on my own truck. The crank no start will piss you off. Check for high pressure oil system leaks first….
