In this video, I have a look at a 2010 Ford F150 that has a message on the instrument cluster saying, "check fuel fill inlet." A.K.A., the gas cap on this capless system. It also has the engine light on with a P0457 (EVAP Gross leak) code stored in it. Before you go throwing a smoke machine on it, make sure and have a look at the purge solenoid. -Enjoy!

I wonder if the o2 sensor code pops up because you just forced those fuel gases into the intake without the truck doing it itself. I wonder if it starts a sequence when it uses the evap system where it knows afr eill go to crap so ignore the sensor until it's done with the test. By doing it manually you're probably testing the solenoid itself and not commanding a check thus the truck reading rich rather than normal 14.7:1 or whatever it is for that truck on idle. Regardless, great video!! I like how people like you explain things so we can save time and money chasing gremlings! Keep it up bro!!!! Watching from PR!!!

Would it be safe to assume that a malfunctioning purge solenoid would eventually lead to a plugged charcoal canister and therefore a vent issue? Having trouble getting gas in a 2011 F250 6.2 chassis cab.

You said this is a 4.6L, but the box under your elbow there says 5.4L Triton
Same truck and engine as in the video, getting P0442…assuming it’s due to the capless fuel filler neck being dirty would the check engine light go off on its own or do I need to clear it with a scan tool? How often do you see emission hoses or elbows fail on these? Thank you

One of our 2014 F-150's with the 5.0 Coyote had the 'ck. fuel inlet' message come up. I didn't have the scan tool with and I was out on the road. For the hell of it I took a 1/2 " pipe nipple , cut the threads off one end , put a coating of oil on it and inserted it in the fuel fill. Didn't hear nothing from the driver for about 6 months and the message came back. It ended up being the gas fill neck.

I just had this show up on my f150 2010 with the crappy triton engine. fun times. Day later… mine was the problem as well, no vacuum. I was happy to see that my Blue Driver tool was able to tell me the vapor pressure and command numbers in live data. Thanks Eric!!

How much is it for a Ford F-150 2005 to check the fuel cap in it? My dad’s dash board says that.
I hate techy computer crap on cars ….. you'll never convince me this stuff makes operating or repairs "easier" and "better" ….. and Ford does seem to make the parts that break down in the hardest places to get to ….. I had a 1980 chevy straight 6 , was a breeze to diagnose and repair anything , NO computerized high tech crap …… My 2010 F-150 has been a great truck , but a pain in the ass when "it's not perfect" ….. and i am sick of those damn dashlights ….. Hell , I changed tires and my freakin "low tire light" has been on for years ….. what moron cannot tell when they have a low tire and needs these damn high tech sensors on EVERYTHING ….. Insurance companies are forcing all this BS on us ….. I do not need airbags , anti-lock brakes , traction control , tire sensors , or a truck that has "a mind of it's own" ….. screw all that crap , seatbelt is fine with me , I can pump my own brakes , I know when my tires are low , and I know how to drive in the rain or snow ….. $2000 worth of tech crap on every vehicle nowdays , JUST because the insurance companies are trying to save money forking out claims …. Trust me , this is not about your safety , they only give a damn about $$$$$$$$ and trying not to pay out claims , forcing US to fork out the money to protect THEIR WALLETS …… and yes I am ranting because I am trying to get my truck inspected and that "fuel inlet" bullshit is causing me problems …. I HOPE "a tap" fixes that crap or it's just a solenoid and i don't have to replace the damn fuel inlet assembly or tank just to get it inspected …. Everything works fine , but all my damn dash warning lights are on , all of them …. it's frickin BS ……. The truck runs just fine , everything works just fine , yet it won't pass inspection until I get those damn lights off
My 2010 F-150 4.6 shows that cluster message every once and a while….I end up squirting some oil on the inlet spring (where the fuel nozzle goes) and using the manufacturers supplied funnel to operate (to work in the oil) (I could do this when I fill up and use the fuel nozzle to operate the door) and cleaning the door of debris (this helps seal the system)….clear the code with a scan tool and voila….I guess I've been lucky…..

I found out the vehicle comes with a special funnel or if its missing you need to BUY a special funnel to refill those stupid capless vehicles with a GAS CAN. Yea the funnel fits in perfect like the fuel nozzle at the gas station does. Ford gives you the funnel with the vehicle but now EVERYONE has one of these stupid caps I bet some cost cutters don't include them with the vehicle in the spare tire kit.
