I reprogrammed a Nexus Tablet to use as a OBDII Diagnostic Computer. It's faster, can be upgraded, and can work with any system; even beyond car engines.

Does your employer just not buy the tools you need to do your job? Do they reimburse you at all for the ones you buy?

in 2022 i couldn't have a corded scan tool for $3,000, my autel 908 BT for half that cost and wireless ,it's just so much more convenient for being under the hood and under the car for
bi-directional control and after owning snap-on scan tools before it's not $1,000 to update on something i already paid thousands of dollars for in the first place, but to each there own.

$3,000?! The one snap-on guy I saw wanted 11! That was the last time I ever set foot on his truck.

(Edit: there’s no way this comment could come back to bite me in the arse if I ever get a job working on someone else’s car.)

I had an early 2000s Ford Mustang with a V6, manual transmission come in for no A/C. Also had a check engine light on. I have a personal habit of pulling codes jsit to see if there's any relation between that and the issue at hand. Codes pulled up faults for O2 heaters (all 4), purge and vent valve issues, no compressor due to relay codes. Upon pulling a wiring diagram and finding a burned fuse, I then put the car up in the air to see if there were any harness issues. Unplugged all the O2s, still burned the fuse. Pulled the purge and vent valve connectors, still burnt the fuse. At this point I headed towards a dead short. Upon looking around the engine and Trans, that's when I found the harness over the bell housing was pinched between the engine and tranny, more than likely when the last clutch was done. That was a fun find and fix.

Had that happen with the trucking company I’m working for lol one of the kenworth trucks wouldn’t turn off no matter how many times you try to cycle the keys, only thing that would shut it off is if you pulled the fuse

I totally enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the great job you are doing, not only fixing cars but making awesome videos for the rest of us to enjoy.

The way I look at it now from being in the industry for a number of years is the a/c compressor is the hardest working, most prone to wear item in the a/c system. The service manuals were made to diagnose problems on NEW vehicles with NEW components. The likelihood of an a/c amplifier module being internally defective on a Toyota with that age on it and being inside the vehicle not exposed to atmosphere and weather is very unlikely.
What concerns me the most is the wiring job someone else did on that remote start system.
Hacking in to and piggybacking harness wiring is generally very suspicious and does often cause corollary problems with other wiring system components depending on the level of care and attention made with the remote start installation.
You did a good job diagnosing this issue and regardless of going down the rabbit hole of testing components you were thorough and you learned to go for the obvious even when you think there may be something else causing the problem.
Understandably you didn't want to install an expensive new a/c compressor when there may have been something else causing the HVAC system malfunctioning.

I've seen you use your smarts to quickly diagnose something in 5 minutes..
It's called "street smarts" and usually give better, faster results…

I've been a network troubleshooter for over 40+ years, and there are basic tests that take me 95% of the way, by simple asking the customer a few basic questions and poking around the device.
I still have colleagues that will refuse to investigate or talk to the customer until they have all the diagnostic files, which really delays a solution, sometimes for weeks..
They do it because they're not confident or competent in their diagnostic skills, or lack the imagination to find 2-3 ways to test the same thing, which would provide confirmation.
Not to toot my horn, but I average 1 day to solve 99% of my customer issues. (and I mean average time)
