  1. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim Davis says:

When we had a glass company replace a sunroof glass and seal they used a heat gun to put it on. I think that was to soften it or maybe to shrink it. Not sure. They put on some sort of stuff that I think was just high dollar Armor All on the seal before they closed it. Took the guy about 2 hours to align the tracks as 1 side went back farther than the other and when closing it would bind up. I told him the tracks were probably out of alignment and he just adjusted it with the screws since like this one the holes were larger than needed. It worked until we traded it in without leaks but 2 hours to replace the glass and seal because, like you started he wanted to put the glass in before the seal. It happens. He told me that several cars since 2010 had an issue with the glass exploding in the heat and to leave the inside open so air could flow and heat wouldn't build up between the inside cover and the glass. Been doing that for years without exploding sunroofs so maybe someone else who reads this will do the same and save that $500 plus cost for a new sunroof glass and seal plus labor. Take care.

I think you could’ve made your job a whole lot easier by running the point of a small pick through the groove, then lubricating the seal with spray silicone lubricant.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars n6box1 says:

Hay Ray. Try a heat gun next time on the rubber. I'm an equipment maintenance tech. When we have to install o-rings in a tight groove we put it in a 150 degree oven for 10 minutes. They pop right in.
Love the channel! Thx for your video's.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marc_sVs Engineering says:

Dawn dishwashing soap mixed with water is your friend when it comes to rubber seals. Wearing clean gloves or having very clean hands is mandatory when working around headliners. Not sure how you're going to deal with those greasy marks you left on at least 3 different spots I noticed from the before and after on the headliner.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars iconoclad says:

I don't know what dielectric grease is but I have found that silicone lubricant makes stuff as slick as eel snot. Worked wonders when pulling dash cam cable through a grommet on my yaris hatch.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars john donovan says:

use lube to slide it in… those short lasting lubes… even shampoo water. you noob

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars VBC Salinas Apologetics says:

Haven't done it myself, but I've seen others place a string in the groove, all the way around, before fitting the seal. Pulling the string out — gently — at a right angle to the seal helps make the edge pop over the lip instead of compressing itself against the edge of the glass. Hope that's helpful.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stewies Olderbro says:

I had a lot of respect before for mechanics but ive got even more for them now

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars richardwernst says:

I'm a little surprised you didn't check that the drains were clear.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pat Verry says:

Hell Ray the new screws in the box with the seal kinda suggest the glass must be removed to fit it must be your first day

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Denton says:

use warm soapy water to lubricate most rubber seals for installation, silicone grease will stay there and might facilitate the seal popping back out if it gets a bit of tree sap or road grime partly adhering the seal to the edge of the roof it can yank one out that is a bit loose fitting, maybe a greased one also.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars s snerd says:

All these guys saying to use ANY 'grease' of any kind on any of these is a fool…..if the base of the grease is a solvent to the rubber of the gasket, it WILL dissolve over time….that makes a HUUUUGE mess…..do not ask me how I know this to be true!!!
Silicone spray…real, JUST silicone, silicone spray works wonders on these kinds of things after you let them sit in the hot flowiduha sun for 10 minutes(lived in central flowiduha for 20+ years) so…yeah.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars chris l says:

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars rpm2day G says:

Did you just say death blow hammer?

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Casmige says:

The rubber seal is preformed & corner-centric (like fitted sheets) & requires you to stretch-fit the corners, seat the straight linear edges & finally form fit the last corner.

Also?, Your dirty hands got the headliner all dirty around the perimeter of the sunroof opening. & although you sprayed it down you left vestiges of grease-spots (carb-cleaner needed). Hopefully you came back & cleaned that off?.

BTW?: We really need more “cow-bell” brake-cleaner in all of your video’s….😂

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alex Lopez says:

Hey love watching the videos! I work at range Rover and I understand the pain of Qc-ing panels and "Getting rid of the evidence". Nonetheless great videos as always and wish everyone in Florida the best.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cerus98 says:

Didn’t you make a video a while back in response to criticism that you don’t wear gloves to prove it doesn’t come off onto peoples interiors?

But then leave huge oily fingerprints on their headliner?? You’re a great mechanic but you suck at detailing man.

Never wet clean a headliner and then rub the dirt around. When it dries it’ll be a much larger stain with a clean halo.

Only Ray repairs glass with a hammer!

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars A Dot In The Shark says:

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars thebassclef says:

Sunroofs are the absolute worst invention for cars ever. The amount of failures vs. enjoyment (or even any use at all) has got to be about 5000:1. They should just call them leak hatches.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joosh says:

Thats $5000 Alpaca is the funniest shit you said ever! Make it a fucking shirt!

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry L says:

    TY

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ken Uber says:

I'm sure that's the way they did it at the factory! HaHaHa. Not really…They used a bigger hammer.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris's race porting says:

You should have used some heat on the seal. Doesn't always work but in my experience most of the time it helps

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bruce Grunewald says:

You are finally coming out of your PHSD from Ian. You were struggling a little in those first videos. That seal was a more difficult job than I would have thought. No wonder the owner brought it in "ran out of time", more likely patience.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Oscar Leon says:

Alright everyone, let's band together and chip in and get Ray that challenger he wants and no not the flood damaged one but a new one. Color shall be blue, so you know it's good.

If you spray soapy water on the seal will lubricate it and make it much easier to install.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dave K says:

Ray.. always soak gaskets in a bucket of hot water. I have to do freezer door gaskets that way..awesome the job way easier. Stay safe and be well

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars toledotom57 says:

What an AWESOME install. Great Job Ray!!

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars donald Swanson says:

Some rubber gloves to keep from getting the headliner dirty would have helped.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars BillFromAZ says:

I'm surprised the hammer hits didn't flatten the seal and cause gaps which would leak.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars August Inter-nation (Augy) says:

Ray, I hate to ask a stupid question, but don’t the intake people know to ask the basic questions that will make the mechanics job easier and more efficient for everyone involved?

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Grumpy says:

Nice job, and that customer should be happy. Only thing I may have done differently, would be to raise the mechanism just a tiny tint nanosecond of drive, before tightening the screws, just to apply that little extra closing pressure for when the seal beds in.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sherman Kearns says:

Can you use that dialectic grease for other things🤔

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars myz06rocks says:

I’m sure some degree of confidence was required to hit that glass. I wouldn’t have had it.

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Vic Juarez says:

    much love Ray ☝️☝️👍❤️

  51. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Vic Juarez says:

You should have put a big bead of caulking all the way around it on top and on the inside and then the door where you can't see through it you should have just screwed that shut so nobody opens it ever.

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg Blau says:

I've found that usually when I try to do a job by taking apart the least amount of things possible it usually ends up taking longer than going all out in the first place. I still try every time though

  53. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars T'airn'KA says:

Another trick (if you had time), is to soak the seal in warm water for five or ten minutes. 😉

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don B says:

you got me with that door closing procedure, I flinched.

  55. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ivan Olsen says:

did you check the part no. …. it might be the wrong seal

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ryan Moen says:

Good job buddy, looks good. I think you should have cleaned the glass after the testing for leaks 😀.

  57. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Douglas V says:

Love the commentary. Please keep it up.

  58. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars john bowse says:

    Heat and talcum powder. Good

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael D. says:

Pro tip! Next time you are trying to put a rubber seal on glass use rube-glide and a urithane pick from C.R. Laurence. You spray it down with the rube-glise and then slide the pick in the pocket of the rubber when you press the rubber onto the glass and it will go right on.

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Randy Williams says:

No rain on ray today yay

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John P. Callan says:

It's a pity you didn't try the bottle of P-80 THIX Rubber Assembly Lube I sent you last week to paint the entire groove of the seal before trying to install it. Unlike heavy/thick silicone grease, P-80 disappears shortly after installation and does not degrade any kind of rubber over time the way heavy silicone greases will.

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ken Jameson says:

Dictators do lie! Nice job on the sunroof seal.

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars blauskie says:

Wiping off the grease smudges is very impressive. Not at all gross and unprofessional.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Moefuggerr says:

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars NTS says:

I had to remove the glass top of tesla model s plaid at work last spring. We had to use a saw. At least you didnt have to do that. And i use the "hammer a one size higher torx socket into the screw" maneuver all the time.

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peg4x4 says:

Why does anyone want a hole in the roof of their car?

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Derek Marshall says:

I just wrecked my 2008 Enclave so this vid was bittersweet but those duel sunroofs are notorious for leaking. I siliconedy shut LOL

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ikantspell4 says:

FYI if you want less pain than Ray use some lube (soapy water works fine) the snugness is feature not a bug. More pain than dropping it off at shop but less hurt on the wallet.

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars N6532l says:

I lubricate rubber parts with baby power.

  80. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars A. Voltz says:

I think it was Two Guys Garage where I first heard to use window cleaner, Windex or windshield washer fluid as a temporary lube for getting rubber or silicon exhaust hangers on easier. The reason being it will eventually dry so the rubber or silicon piece you're installing stays in place. I would of tried this method first instead of a grease type of lube.

Why did the walrus want to go to a Tupperware party? Cuz he heard there was a tight seal.

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Pyle says:

Any chance you can get the phone to quit ringing in the shop when the person that needs to answer it is in the office?

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Milosz says:

Did he say "Buick Autoclave?" – I wonder if one should put silicone or maybe specialized automotive rubber lubricant ( like BMW's 1Z Gummi Pfege ) on door and sunroof seals to keep them in good shape? I had a 1994 Toyota Celica for 25 years and never put anything on the rubbers, and it never leaked or failed in any way. So I wonder about this advice I've heard to put "dressing" on car rubbers as part of routine maintenance.

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SuperSynth says:

Talcum powder is a fine rubber lubricant.

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ray Shutsa says:

I think that they tried to do the seal but they did not know what they where doing. If you don't take the vehicle to a professional. Great job Ray you did it again another job done perfectly.

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Durica says:

Soap and water like they dont tint jobs…

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SueBobChicVid says:

I would assume the drain tubes are clogged and that is why the owner thinks they need a new seal. The damage to the seal Ray found was the result of the owner's attempt to replace the seal themselves.

Use dish soap " fairy liquid" and string. Pull the string as you work your way around.
BTW when you do oil filter changes ,why don't you use a plastic carrier bag to hold the filter. You can also use a 2 litre coke bottle with the top or bottom cut off.😏
