Come along with Eric O. and have a look at this 2008 Pontiac Torrent 3.4 with a "P0455 Large / Gross EVAP Leak." Now this a very common problem and is often misdiagnosed as a gas cap or a canister vent solenoid. In this video we have a look at the whole system from the canister vent, fuel tank pressure sensor and the often over looked purge solenoid.

What model sCan tool are you using ?
Also when you did the first part of the video where you close the vent an you watched the fuel tank pressure numbers go up. That’s sorta like a smoke test without the smoke machine 🤔 awesome video btw. I’ve watched it several times to fully understand.

Another great diagnosis with well explained procedures and system.ooeration . I could see how it could easily be misdiagnosed. Interesting how you could see the PWM making the test light flicker must run a very low PWM frequency .

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Maxim Teleguz says:

    I currently have underboost P0299 then when I wouldn’t reset that code I would get a P0455.

The low boost causes the engine to lag and no turbo use.

As soon as I reset the low boost I don’t have any codes but low boost come up a bit later. The only time Evap codes come up is when the car purposely lags because of low boost and I don’t reset that code and keep driving. As long as I reset the low boost I have boost and no codes until a bit later.

I don’t know how to fix this.

How can I get in touch ? Got some questions on my 2013 gmc I’ve changed and tested about everything and still throwing the code and getting absolutely terrible fuel mileage / bad idle etc … hoping I could email or something and get some advice …it’s wearing me out lol

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Nie says:

Thanks for going thru the steps to diagnose the problem. I have the same code reader and it helps me get thru the diagnosis.

Curious if you could throw some advise out for a 2500hd with random misfires on cylinder3 and 4…dont know if you do things like this but I've pretty much have been done the rabbit hole with this thing and am running out of solutions….thanks and great videos

Hi! I have a 2004 Chevy Colorado that has the check engine light on. It’s been on and off since I bought it. November 2018 approx. i have replaced almost every single componen in the evap system; from the charcoal canister to the purge solenoid. I have not had any luck locating the cause. I am about to replace the crankshaft and camshaft sensors along with the MAF sensor and see what happens but any idea why that engine light flickers from time to time? Thanks!

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ohhhsnap17 says:

Well this is pointless for your average diy. Not everyone just had a grand to buy a diagnostic tool.

Thank you for your simple but somewhat confusing explanation of a problem I seem to be having with my 2003 gmc envoy sle. I don't smell fuel or see any signs of leaking from hoses or tank but my truck seems to lose gas fast most of the time so that's why I said confusing. I'm old school mechanic now I'm just a parts changer with the valuable advice from you a true professional mechanic. The Mackey mouse code readers from local auto parts store don't give in depth troubleshooting like you have here. I grew up with Chilton manuals and no sensors and plastic parts with over thought bad designs. I will change my evap sensor when I get the extra cash and again thank you for this video your time and freely giving your knowledge to me the guy that can't afford someone else to do what I can and like to do myself.

My check engine light came on right after an oil change which was odd because before that it was not coming on. Code came back related to evap leak.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pedro Ventura says:

I have code p0455 & currently having a leak in my evap after doing a smoke test, I realize it’s coming out a little box connected to my charcoal canister but unsure of how to fix that

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Beast says:

Oh yes that money light. Or I have called it the get down under on the ground light. I liked the tip on the charcoal clogging the line. One would think a filter or screen would be in the line. I am going to replace the canister since its 21 years old and behind the rear fender liner driver side. Also all valves and related hoses. But for fun will try gas cap first. I have detected a Oder in that area.

    Where's Purge Valve located on a 2010 F150 5.4 engine

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JR Bird says:

Great info! Thanks! I went from a PO449 to a PO455 after I replacing the evap vent solenoid on a `08 Corvette. I verified that it was faulty by applying 12V to it. I'm going to replace the gap and if that doesn't resolve the LARGE leak, this will help!

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris L says:

My vehicles money light came on and the local guy wanted $1500 to replace the evap solenoid, canister, and 2 o2 sensors. Watching your vids, i did it myself in a couple hours and $200 in parts. Thanks!

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Barselow says:

Do you ever find a new evap purge valve to be bad?
how can I test a new evap purge valve to check if it is bad or not

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Book of Revelation says:

Can we test for evap system failure without a tool to read computer by letting gas tank level drop below 1/4 tank to see if light goes off, then if light goes off from not testing evap system due to low fuel level, then fill above 3/4 to see if light stays off, and if off until fuel level drops below 3/4 before light turns on again, then the light is likely on from evap system?
And purge valve most likely the problem as hardest working and moving part in the evap system?
Gas cap for 15 dollars is tempting to try for a quick cheap fix, but not likely to get damaged before the moving purge valve wears out.
Thanks for video, I learned allot.
