In this video I help Josh diagnose his first car in the shop. Now Josh did not grow up around cars and despite working in the shop with me he has not had any hands on experience with diagnosing or electronics. He has been on brakes and tires and does those very well now. He has made it through his first year of trade school which is mostly classroom time. I want to start helping him, apply what he is suppose to be learning and hopefully give him a head start over his peers for the upcoming year. Josh is a fantastic brake and tire guy and I hope he starts to pick up on the diagnostics a bit and can start to grow. The only way to do that is to start, make mistakes along the way, learn and hopefully grow. Just remember we all had to start somewhere. -Enjoy!

I know this video is old, but Josh looks like he should be rebuilding transmissions. Eating a pastrami sandwich, gold ring or two, but builds a mean th400.
Sir, You are a very good teacher 🍻
I didnt get a heart from Mr. O now i am sad😭 nope it was just gas💩lol
Yes that was very good, practical hands-on testing to narrow it down to the starter.
Wow
wouldn't it be better for Eric O to teach his son rather than some mechanic school ? both are fine people …
I often forget I as well (as others) were at this point in our education. Being self taught myself I often forget it's not common knowledge how to use a DMM or how DC current works, etc etc. I won't verbalize it but sometimes I ask myself in my head "really, is it that difficult to retain/understand?". I need to keep in mind i as well was asking these questions and learning at one point… good on you Eric. I learned something from this video as well, your patience and my need to keep in mind not everybody is on the same level.
And Josh, i know this was 4 years ago and i'm sure you're a full fledged tech now, but i commend you for keeping your cool and not getting flustered in front of somebody more experienced. That's how you learn and you seemed very eager to do so. Good on you both!
To Josh
Josh you you will not get a better teacher this person knows what he is talking about hints —– listening what he say and remember what he say don't gess it if you don't know ask I have been a motor mechanic for 50 yrs when I done my apprenticeship it was for 5 yrs in Australia and got my ads kick several times for gessing the problems and not going through the process proper
Hey South Main, this video was very good video and we well looking more of such videos, trust me is avery good way sharing your exteeemd knowledge in this feed. This kind of video where you are couching is Josh is an eye to also confirm our knowledge of what we have read . We look forward for more of such videos. Greetings to family.
I like the teaching style, you don't give him the answers, you prompt him and leave him to figure it out for himself
Eric do have any Training Class recommendations?
Garage Gurus Training came through soliciting their training program. I know nothing of them.
Im looking into training for O scope , CAN and other newer stuff coming through the door now.
I will be watching, would like to know more on the newer cars and CPUs…
Watching this scared the poop 💩 out of me. These kids .wow I didn't know they
Zoom zoom boom boom
Great Boss and Great Man to take the time and let him find his way, the best way to learn is not to be told what's wrong but to let him find the way on his own. Please do more videos like this in between answering YouTube Call all day lol.
Love this vid it also helped me a lot, and josh good look brother you will be a god mechanic 👍🏻👍🏻
This was good. As a life-long electronics tech (and having to train some of the new techs who are just starting out), I know that it's difficult to picture in your mind concepts like differences in potential, current flow, etc. It's something that eventually clicks as you work with it.
Sweet
Diagnosing electrical problems is rocket science to me. I don't even know how to use a multimeter. Most other things on a car I can fix though.
Powers and grounds.
Bad starter..
I own a 1973 Porsche 914 which had dead/flat spots on the starter and would occasionally not start because of the flat spots. Because I basically built the car from the ground up, including the engine I was aware of how a lot of the systems worked (granted the systems are not modern) and a 12V test light was my go to tool. I kept one in the car. Anyway when the car wouldn't start I would lay on the ground and jump the starter terminals with a flat blade screwdriver for just a second, which would get it past the flat spot on start and away we go! Sometime a tap with a Russian wrench (aka a hammer) would free things up. Great videos Eric, I watch them for hours.
The problem is the hat ,he wore a Honda hat to impress the teacher but to master this car thing he needs a Jeep hat Like yours .Like Mrs. O needs a new 4 door Jeep Rubicon .
Good job Josh 👍🏻
Not to knock on his college education but there’s no substitute for being around the block a few times.
Hard working young fella ,good onya cobba,a good boss(teacher) means the world ,good luck matey
Same way my uncle taught me,
Speaking of quick and dirty, just like us DIY like it, first thing I would have done was tap on that starter
Don't remember if I've commented on this video before, but I just watched it again. Want to say that Josh did a great job, and he'll undoubtedly be a great asset to the industry. Thank you very much Josh for sharing a part of your journey with us, and wish you good fortune 🙂.
Eric, you are a great teacher.
😃😇best wishes Josh ❤ knock'em outta the park.
That is so simple that it only took me 50 years to learn it. 😁 Also, it is nice to see a young person that wants to "learn how" and not just want "the answers given to them".
man he sure is learning, i wanted to nudge him and be like "hey you did that wrong" we've all gotta start somewhere tho. great job teaching
I too am a test light I as opposed to a meter you did good and he is learning the theory will help him but the practical knowledge you'll get from you you can't buy that congratulations dad
From being the new guy on this page, I'll say this. Josh, you are no doubt in the best of hands anyone could ever ask to have in learning this trade. Focus on everything he says, and you will be a seriously awesome mechanic!! Best of luck!!!
You are the best, knowledge is power not to keep to yourself but to help others . God bless you
Good job I've always been a barrel of useless knowledge
Good brake switch! Many cars require brake be pushed to start!
Knowing what question to ask is half the fight.
Man. This video so enriched me because I love working on cars and it is "getting the mindset" needed to repair, I. E. Diagnostics. I'm looking for somewhere to learn more.
Good teacher thank you for sharing
Josh is learning at the school of hard knocks. Way better than a classroom…
Wishing Josh the best!!
Great job not berating him and being patient. We as viewers have to understand people might not be as comfortable in front of a camera and can make mistakes we usually don’t make too.
awesome teachings. Josh is lucky to have you around, your a good dude.
Yeah the fuse box thing burned me before, On my grandmothers colbolt for example, It just quit starting one day of course in the middle of winter on the coldest day of the season, battery was good, safty neutral switch was good, So I had a spare starter for it I threw it on still no crank, Well found a fuse that was not blown but not installed all the way, a 2 min fix turned out to be a couple hour diagnoses and starter change lol.
So I do take the time to look at fuses on a no crank situation, I mean it only takes 5 min, and I was a ford mechanic and we always had fuse boxes corrode on us which is pretty common on them f and e series, what do ya know.
I also been burned before on my uncles 09 GMC that had no oil pressure, took the time to change out the sensor which kinds sucks, its all by feel, here a contact behind the darn fuse box was not making good contact, I love the rust belt sometimes…. I do wish I owned a good scope, and volt meter, miss that stuff in the garage I worked at.
I would love to see more of these
You are treasure, fun to follow your channel
This video has a lot of good info. I’m a rookie myself, and I’m running into a similar issue with a GM pick up. So I’m trying to diagnose an issue with just a test light.
Very informative
I went to trade school in 1971 to become a diesel mechanic and welder. They just teach the basics in these schools and the only way to really learn is by hands on experience which Eric is providing for Josh. Well done Eric!
