Come along with Eric O. at the SMA garage as we have a closer look at the in cylinder cranking pressure waveforms we gathered with our Pico Scope (files below). One of the best parts about YouTube is the interaction with a you the viewers. A viewer named Steve Stacey inspired me to take a closer look at my cranking waveform on the #5 cylinder and see if we could pick it apart a little more.

Have been watching you show those cylinder pressure wave forms for a while now. Never fully understood what they meant. After your demonstration with the syringe, I fully understand what the dip in the wave form is. Thank you. I'm just an old retired electrician that is still learning. Stan
Thanks 😊.
Eric, I know its been four years but your files don't seem to be available anymore. Anyway I could get those (just for grins>) Also, can't seem to get to your Amazon store either.
Leaking air/fuel mix on upstroke thru exhaust valve is going to wear out the cat(s) sooner.
It will be nice to take the engine apart to check the theory.
he is a great teacher!
Your explanation and your visuals were amazing. Love the way you made technical look easy.
What did the problem end up being? Experiencing the same issue on an 03 accord. Runs great when it drives, not idling though.
Hey Eric, ijust wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make all these videos, but specially for making all the learning process so much fun because it is great to find people like you in this world, thankyou very much and god bless you and your family
Your an excellent teacher Mr. O. ! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this.
Very nice illustration. Thanks
If you want the whiteboard perfectly white again, try WD40.
It’s great to see you give back to the industry. Great instructor.
I guess the small vacuum or the small dip shown on the waveform on other cylinder is due to the blow you or leaks from the rings.
If some of the air has escaped on the up stroke through a leaky exhaust valve, wouldn't it suck more air in during the down stroke through the same leaky exhaust valve?
Scotty Kilmer on the board. I enjoy your diagnostic videos. I think it's because in EMS, we use the same thought process on patients. There is a problem, find signs and symptoms, test and diagnose, form a plan, and treatment. You use your knowledge and experience to form your treatment plan. You never stop learning and use every opportunity to grow. Analysis of cardiac wave forms or in- cylinder compression tests are much the same. Don't stop posting these case studies. You are pushing out valuable knowledge to those that have yet to see complicated problems. Great job Dr. Runsgood.
Take a look at how the compression tower is leaning more on number 5 cylinder 5 as well indicating the compression loss as well by going faster into a vacuum
Did you fix it and how what did you have to do
Eric, I was hoping to see the part 3. What did you find under the cover?
Thanks for the visuals. That makes a lot of sense showing it like you did.
This video was a great addition! If I lived anywhere near you, I’d want to join the team!
I was scratching my head a bit watching the first part trying to understand this concept. This video was a great addition! If I lived anywhere near you, I’d want to join the team!
Better to over- diagnose than under-diagnose. I can't wait to see you do the thermostat on a 2015 Chrysler 200' 2.4l……just did one yesterday….
Is there another part to this? Looking for closure!
Brilliant video Eric, good teaching logic,I’m moving towards aurel maxiscope,I find diagnoses just so rewarding, but ,it so difficult to make it pay,but I enjoy it.great video, enjoy the learning process.thanks.
He's a good teacher. I have a 2004 Honda Accord 4 cyl.(i-VETC 2.4 DOHC SULEV). The spark plugs have about 50,000 miles on them and the maintenance required light is constant. I plan to change the plugs and the upstream O2 sensor. Although the car has only 118,000 miles and runs perfectly, I'm trying to figure what's going to bite me in the butt.
I wish you lived in my city Mr. O, I would recommend you to everyone! 😆
So simple yet so fascinating. Great job on the video and science project. Thanx!
I like how you take the long view on diagnoses. Make a little bit of extra effort today to save you tons of time and aggravation down the road. That's perfect in my view. Strategic thinking pays off.
So what was the solution, the final fix? A valve job? Did I miss part 3? Did you fix the problem?
Sir I have one doubt, anyway if there is an exhaust leak it should be in all over the process right..?
So if air escapes through the leak during compression then that air should come again via that leak simultaneously as the pressure drops below the atm pressure
Then how the cylinder holds vaccum till the exhaust valve open even under the leaking circumstances.
I can't find a follow up video to this and previous diagnosis video. Did Eric O ever pull the head on that engine? What did he find when/if he did?
With an issue like that is it possible that the valves on the front bank have a carbon build up that could be dealt with by one of the various "treatments" with one of the various fuel cleaners? If yes how do we know that without either trying a "treatment" or pulling the head?
Next thing you know, you'll be teaching alongside Brandon Steckler 😍😍 or Scot Manna! 😍😍 I love their lessons on this topic and they both seem to complement each other. You using the syringe is right out of Steckler's class. It's a great visual. I think it's what helped drive what I was seeing on the waveform home for me.
Excellent nerd out video! 🤓🤓🤓👍👍👏👏
Damn man. Great video. Great explanation. Probably made the most sense to me than any other thing has ever in my whole life. Amazing diagnostic tool. I love your videos.
If you have a leaking valve, wouldn’t you pull the air loss as you go bdc?
Made sense
The white board example was good enough for me to get the idea of what is happening to that cyl. Makes complete sense. Great classroom video.
Greetings, viewer. Eric the South Main Auto guy here. If it’s your birthday, happy birthday!
The same people who think that over-diagnosis is a thing are precisely the same people who fire a parts cannon at their car and bitch that it’s cost them so much money and it’s still broken.
When you go to the hospital because it’s suspected you have cancer, do you want them to just say ‘yeah maybe, you said you might have cancer so we’ll go with that’, or would you like your doctor to actually do their fucking job?
You people will bitch about anything. Fuck right off with your ‘over-diagnosis’. I’ll diagnose my car however the hell I want, and will fix it properly, accordingly. And I don’t think it will be going out on a limb too much, here, to suggest that Eric will do the same.
Eric you're killing me every time you say escape you actually say exscape Rant over
What an absolutely perfect way of demonstrating cyl. Pressure loss. From PICO to practical demo. OUTSTANDING Mr O. Absolutely outstanding.
Anyone not understanding your demo… Well better leave it there eh? Probably too busy loading the parts cannon.. Maybe!
Perfectly explained!! Even a total dunce DIYer like me understands exactly what you're describing. Heck, the stuff is fascinating. Wonder if managing four family cars is enough to justify buying a scope 😁😁. Great job as always, Eric!
So how did you fix this or what did it need repaired or adjusted?
Will the Waveform look the same if intake valve was leaking ?
You are putting out invaluable info for the generations to come! Thanks for the hard work you put into making well-explained videos!
Ever end up pulling the head??
One more reason why a GOOD scope is needed today in repair shops. Great Video!
And people wonder why a good mechanic cost so much. Watch this and it will click..There's so many technicalities on new engines. You explained it so well I kinda understand but I'm still clueless. I try and do as much work as I can myself but I couldn't do this on my own. Great video!!
Thank you all for the birthday wishes! It feels great to be 25!!
Well 25ish…
