Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he has a look at this 2004 Honda Civic that was towed in with a "crank no start" It is not your typical timing belt or fuel pump but a rather unusual problem. Let's see what we find!

Thank you so much, Eric. For doing this video. I happen to replace the camshaft seal and the EGR gasket. Due to an oil leak. After I was done the car ran normally for 15-20 minutes. Then it began to have the same problems as that Civic you worked on in this video. So I pull out that, EGR Valve and clean it as you did. Afterward, the car started normally and did the same procedures as you did. By removing the FI-ECU fuse. The car started normally again. Took it around the neighborhood then it almost died again at the first two stop signs. Once I got home I turn it off and on several times. It started normally. By then It was already Midnight. Tomorrow I am going to drive it around the neighborhood again to see how it behaves. Anyway, once again thank you so much. I was lucky to find this video. It sure cut down my stress level by a ton.

Great video! I have a question I just changed the Crankshaft position sensor and it did not solve the issue. The computer still says that is the Crankshaft sensor. what is your advice? is better to replace the sensor again or the plugger to the sensor might be damaged? Please let me know the best step to take.
    Thank you so much!
    Milton!

Need to having a 2005 Honda Civic ex special edition 1.7l . I replaced head gasket and water pump and timing belt and gaskets myself. After setting timing and valve gap I have crank no start. Fist crank it started for 3-5 seconds and died and never restarted. I never had any trouble before doing this work with the car just coolant overflow would come out and overheat the engine and I would park it. It doesn’t have a reall good compression but I think it never did but use to run ok. My question is after checking I had fuel spark and new cam sensor and rechecked timing and valve gap after no start it was all ok but no start. Your video shows using a vacuum gauge after the purge solenoid and you have 2 1/2 inches and I checked mine and I have zero. What am I missing? What could make my car not have any reading on gauge when cranking? Any suggestions would help and I appreciate your videos. Thanks

Need some help please. I have a 04 honda civic lx 1.7 liter auto just like in the video. It sat for 5 years, no gas in tank, motor cranks and will run with starting fluid but not on its own. I checked the fuel pump fuse and relay. Can you guys give me any idea where else to look? I ordered a new fuel filter in tank because it has 160k miles and im sure its dry and clogged.

Unbelievable. A piece of carbon the size of a pebble, costs this car owner a few hundred dollars, including the tow.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Downing says:

You scraped carbon from the EGR but no brake part cleaner? Were you feeling ill that week? 🙂 🙂 🙂

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eastman51 says:

On 90s Toyotas, there's a vacuum solenoid that pulls on the EGR. This solenoid is known to go bad, and can easily be tested with a hand vacuum pump. My 95 Corolla was throwing an OBD1 code for EGR failure, so I thought I needed a new EGR,valve. But when I looked up the EGR test in the Toyota service manual, I realized that it was actually my EGR actuator solenoid valve. Much cheaper fix.
Something also common on 90s Toyotas, at least Corollas and Previas, is that the intake passages clog with carbon and cause EGR flow to be "insufficient" and throws its own separate code. I cleaned my intake manifold in addition to the EGR actuator and don't have any codes anymore! Had I not cleaned the intake passages, I am certain I would've been faced with an insufficient flow code.

On my 1995 Previa, it is throwing me an insufficient flow code. Its EGR works exactly like the Corolla's, so I performed the EGR tests and confirmed that I need to clean out the intake manifold

this is the exact symptoms my old 07 honda fit had. took to our local mechanic, told me it needs an engine, why? cause it does. this is why we hate mechanics, they charge 159$ to diagnose it, then dont even explain why it might need an engine when it didnt. Ended up getting written off before I saw this video though

My neighbor has a 2001 Civic EX with a no start. It cranks but doesn't fire. The negative battery cable was replaced as the original complaint was no crank at all. Turned out the negative cable was so badly frayed it lost conductivity. Anyways the current problem is it will spin but not fire. One thing to notice. When the ignition switch is turned to ON only a couple dash lights operate no odometer no fuel gauge, etc. No power windows operate or door locks. It is though half the car has no power but the car spins over quickly the battery has plenty of juice.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 10mmsnapon says:

Soak the egr valve/ system with Amsoil power foam. Let sit for 30mins. Dissolves carbon like a champ. My 90 Accord had that problem. Run higher octane fuel sometimes will also help. 87 octane will run a vehicle but not great over long term.
