In this video I have a look at this 2003 Honda Civic 1.7 that came in from another shop with the check engine light on indicating it has a problem with the fuel tank pressure sensor P0453. They threw a few parts at it but nothing stuck so it is our turn to see if it can be fixed. -Enjoy!

What’s a rough estimate on the job you did how much did you charge if you don’t mind

Man this video totally saved me. I had swapped an ecm from a 2005 lx civic to my 04 ex civic due to issues with vtrc controller. Had to rewire o2 sensor but missed the ground for the fuel tank pressure sensor. Another quick little rewire and all is good again. Been doing 12v aftermarket for 30 years and I learned a few things. Thanks man.

This video absolutely made me look like a genius (customers actual words) I know better but still…..
It was the 5 volt reference wire busted next to the back seat by a bullet. He didn't tell me until after I found it that someone had shot his car while he was out walking his dog in an open space area. So different wire but I knew what to look for on both ends because of this info so thank you sir!

Eric, don't risk your life around rodent faeces or make light of the risk that everyone is told about in safety briefings – that we all promptly ignore.
Colleague of mine removed a suspended ceiling tile overhead, received a pile of dust and crap to the face and in the eyes, thought nothing of it – it's just part of the job, brush off and move on.
3 days later he's in the hospital with swollen eyes and blurred vision. He ended up blind in one eye and with severely impaired vision in the other. Let's just say the company provided insurance in no way makes up for the detriment to his quality of life, for the rest of his life.

    The cause? Rat shit.

Rat shit to the eye causes blindness – who knew right??? Well clearly we already knew that as it was in the safety briefings, they don't just put things in safety briefings for fun. Rat shit to the eye is low frequency occurence but very high risk when it occurs. Human nature has us ignore low frequency risks, hind brain survival thing.

I'm not sure Vanessa would be particularly pleased if you went blind for the want of simply wearing eye protection. Real Men fire guns and be all gungho sure, Real Men also take care of their wife to the grave – suddenly being blinded in later life puts a crimp on both those things.

TLDR; Don't get rodent faeces on your face or in your eyes.

I get the impression Eric made this video for the benefit of the other shop. Explaining the diagnostic process step by each so they and we can learn. So good.

I work in an industry where certain groups like to keep information to their own group so as to artificially restrict everybody else. There is no novel technology or w/e that is in use that would possibly need protection as proprietary. I call these groups "dicks". Because that is what they are… utter dicks. Insecure in themselves utter dicks.
When I come across such things in my day to day, I take the time to reverse engineer things and document it, lo and behold – just an industry standard line level driver or w/e every time – wrapped in "mystery".
Shared knowledge raises all our boats, it is not a threat. We raise the shared boat and we all have a higher common platform to work from to allow us to reach higher again.

Don't be one of those dicks requiring everyone to live on your niche lower level platform. Learn, Share, Evolve, Repeat. If you are not continually learning you are already dead while still breathing.

TLDR; Don't be a dick. Read above for the definition of dick 😀

Like your videos; being a driveway mechanic to my 2015 Ecodiesel, I have picked up numerous useful tips. Ordered a "T" to spread the word.
Wanted to order a sweat as well but only pull-over available. Notice you wear a zip-up. What gives?
Love the shooting video as well. Too bad us oppressed folk in Canada do not have that opportunity. Stay well!

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Warren Jones says:

Wondering why you don't use a wire tracer to find shorts/breaks.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Zinsmeyer says:

Thats not too often Eric gets a car where he has to get inside the car to get to the ECM.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars konstantinus Stoyanov says:

Because I said so, great content

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nathan Dillard says:

I work in the telco industry.. we have these devices called Time Domain Reflectometers also referred to as TDRs. We use em to tell how long any given wire is to the exact footage. However they are super helpful for finding breaks or faults in wires too and will tell us exactly how many feet out it is to the short. Do they even have an equivalent to that in the auto industry? I feel like this would help you track this down a lot easier.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rob Withoff says:

I thought you'd check the sensor signal out at the sensor while you had it butt-plugged to see if the signal voltage wobbled first, but at the ECM works too.

    Love your diagnostic prowess.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Paul Santos says:

Nevermind the mouse traps, watch out for the airbag.
Also, if it ends up being related to the radio, somebody should have gone with the adapter plugs where you don't touch the harness. Cheaper than diagnosing all those problems and the parts that were replaced.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars discoveryman59 says:

Honda Civic?? We have a repair unicorn here!!

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard 1 says:

Diagnosing a Dodge Nitro with a misfire and found a code for the I.A.T. My first round with this vehicle. Verified 5 volts and a good ground at the I.A.T. connector. I.A.T. scan tools data shows good temperature readings. Is the I.A.T. bad? Was it replaced already and the codes were not cleared? I do not know. So I clear all data after fixing misfires and wait to see if it reoccurs after a few drive cycles. How does the I.A.T. affect engine performance? Does it skew the fuel trims? I would like to know. Thank you. Richards "Mobile" Auto and Air,,

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard 1 says:

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars FSU 378 says:

I’m having electrical issues with my blazer the passenger door lost power but I have 12 volt wire(orange) power and good ground. Checked module and it works fine on other doors. Seems like every video I watch you find a broken wire within minutes.😂😂. Super frustrating

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars M D Adams says:

the worst part is once you know its a broken wire the customer wants an exact quote. then when you had to take the whole car apart to find the break they scream how can you charge me so much for fixing a wire I calmly explain I did not charge you anything for the 5 minutes it took to repair it In fact I only charged you for 3 hrs despite it taking 5 to get at it and put everything back together

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ca Native says:

I watched your two part video, but more than likely you a high impedance at the connector from the spilled drink. If the output impedance is high at the sensor, it load down the signal
