Let's have a look at this 2007 Honda Ridgeline 3.5 that was brought into the shop with a "rough running" complaint. It is a low mileage engine (79k) so it should be interesting to see what we find.

Thats why i study and do most of service work myself. The dealer most likely put a new timing belt on and was one tooth off on one or more cogs. And was not careful. If the owner would have pushed on the dealer more, they might have owned up to their blunder. This seem clear there was something fishy going on

I wouldn't fault the Dealer's repair shop too much for its approach to the repair or non-repair. Honda, like al manufacturers these days, develop procedures for their repair shops to follow. More likely to than not, the dealer's mechanic got to a point where the repair manual stated that the engine needs to be replaced. Honda's, as well as all manufacturer's, justification for this approach is their inability to control QA at the repair shop level, so replacement is preferred over in-depth repairs. This is the same logic Apple uses at their stores when someone brings in a defective I-phone for as simple battery replacement.

Just had my Ridgeline fixed of a similar problem, Truck ran fine, no codes, But could hear a miss at the rear of the vehicle (tail pipe); like you said, putt, putt, putt. Tried Seafoam cleaners in the intake, oil and gas in case it was the carbon buildup you found. Then changed plugs and coil packs. Took a compression reading of cylinders and there wasnt a big difference between the cylinders. Finally broke down and took it to my Honda Dealer for a computer test. They found a couple of misfire codes, and a pcv code. They suggested it was the valve lash that needed adjusted, and found a bad hose on pvc system. Said they have seen it lots of times and if adjusted it should fix the problem. Since I had 100,000km and 10years on timing belt decided to do the whole job (timing belt, tensioner, valve lash adjustment) Now she runs like normal and no miss. He said valves were extremely tight, and in dire need of adjustment. Love your videos by the way.

On a 2002 jeep liberty to do a compression test do I have to remove all spark plugs?

Wish I had Eric, or a mechanic like Eric near me. The type you can take your vehicle to, and know you're going to get honesty, and solid work.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Norm Sebby says:

a pure case of dealer timing belt fraud….the dude bent the valve and now its pull the head time….hondas have close piston to valve clearance so no one is owning up to that mistake as they probably had their rookie work on it….sad

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Justin Riley says:

they tried to screw her because they didn't think she'd figure it out. it was the tech we all know what happened she should tell the service Manger and the owner of the dealership if she has to. I bet they'll fix it. if not maybe get the ol lawyer fella involved because that ain't right!

My 2007 Honda Odyssey wasran with no oil. It is now showing a VSA, check engine light, and smoke from exhaust. The engine will idle and shake. The mechai has no idea. Help please. It will turn on but not with as much power as before.

Yes it's hard to find honest mechanic really like what you're doing

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robin Sattahip says:

I had a 98 Mazda 626 which was recalled for the timing belt, it never worked right after the dealer replaced it. Some dealer mechanics are incompetent.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars wes c says:

    Interesting diagnosis.
I don't have a smoke machine, but it could come in handy.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mil Espi says:

Probably, piston was all the way up and the exhaust valve open when out of time, maybe tech turned the crank to align a couple turns, when out of time and valve open. It is interference. That is more than likely what I think happened.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craigie F Concert says:

Obviously the dealership messed it up and then covered their tracks. Worst thing is they charged her even more after the fact to do spark plugs for no reason.

A dealership in Ontario took a customer car home a couple of hundred miles, drive the shit out of it; and didnโ€™t even put in more gas. They figured it out through GPS.

At least Iโ€™m the one who fucked up my own engine doing the timing belt ๐Ÿ˜‚
The question is how did it go wrong when I put the belt on the right teeth the first time and turned over the engine by hand a bunch of times into make sure? No idea, but I have this exact problem of an intermittent misfire.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars AngryDINGUS says:

I always chatter away about how "the last person that touched it didn't know what they were doing" as well. Especially if it is brand new from the factory lol

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Elena Nykolaychuk says:

Do you have any tricks for accessing the cylinders in the back? They are so hard to reach/see.

Also, how are the cylinders numbered? I have a misfire in cylinder 2, but I can't confirm which cylinder that would be on my Honda Ridgeline 2009. Thank you for the video!

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gonedesi Howel says:

    the dealer screw up

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Garry Kennedy says:

Hondoo!!!!!!!!!!! LOL So 4000 miles ago it had only 38000??? That's weird!! Why? Nevermind, figured it out. Had one where the springs that contact the spark plugs had corrosion on them. So keep that in mind. But I agree with your assessment of the timing belt replacement procedure being the culprit. How else could that happen other than a factory defect of the valve which would have been obvious before the 100K maintenance. A full 2 full turns of the main crank then rechecking the timing marks should have been done after putting on the timing belt. You always make sure the front of the timing belt is tight and ALL the slack is on the tightener when installing the timing belt. Easy to screw up. Not easy to admit. Poor gal,,,, I feel bad for her man. I just noticed you have a follow up video.. I'm off to watch it now. You're a good man. After hours and can't go home until you know what's up. Great work ethic. Love it. God bless you and yours bud.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars highrzr says:

She must have gone to the king of Stealerships. Sounds like she had routine service performed on it since it was new at the stealership, and 79k miles later they told her she needs a new engine? A Honda with 79k miles that was maintained? It happened when the timing belt was changed.
