Time to take this head to the machine shop have the valves touched up and see if we can get to the root cause of this problem. Now my machine shop guy was a bit shy so we don't get to see the whole process but we do get a little peek. Enjoy!

also this is the guy I want working on my cylinder head.. letting your dog roam around your shop while you bang on the table and grind away at the valves

machine shop is pretty quiet….you could fire a shot through the place and not hit anything or anybody….i'm always concerned about shops that are too quiet and not doing any business………..but i'm sure the old guy can recondition valves and replace valve guides ok …..why not just buy new valves?

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg Ferguson says:

I would of took 2 head off and did same thing to it

Your in my neck of the woods here!! im one town over in Troupsburg! Mr. Rogers has forgot more about building engines (specifically turn left in a hurry engines!) then most guys will ever know! Great guy!!

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Johnny Sechrist says:

I hope you tell the owner to run seafoam. Did he hone the stems and guides Eric?

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kamil says:

Why you only make one head ?

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tim labeaux says:

valve guide and /or valve seal are the culprits for allowing oil by causing the oil consumption and the build up on the valve and seat……that is assuming that a cracked head is eliminated.

I was hearing a banjo playing as you were driving through hills and Iโ€™m pretty sure I heard a pig squealing as well.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! Craig Goodwin says:

Wish I could double like this one. Loved watching this gentleman role that valve in his fingers. He knew the story way before he stuck it in a machine to measure. He's certainly a treasure. Thanks for sharing.

Guys machining like that is a lost art

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bass Hunter says:

You are blessed to have a machinist with the skill, knowledge and integrity that man possesses! Not often you find someone with those "old school" qualities today! Awesome vid Eric!

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Med Tec67 says:

im thinking that the dealership let the crank turn with the belt off and kissed that valve but it started and they called it good

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars White Knight says:

Iโ€™ve done quite a bit of engine rebuilding myself and since itโ€™s only one exhaust valve that is bent my guess is a piece of carbon went through the engine held the valve open and the piston hit the valve and bent it slightly. Probably long before the timing belt was changed. In my experience warming up your engine all the time and not getting the engine up to red line once in a while causes these issues.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mitchell Lerich says:

Cam probably spun free during the timing belt change and pinged that valve off the top of the engine

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Garry Kennedy says:

So it WAS done during the timing belt replacement!!!!!!!!! UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even if you turn the main crank after replacing the timing belt, if it's off a tooth, you can easily do this kind of valve stem bend and not even realize it until you fire it up. But the damage has already been done if you don't know how to feel the small resistance turning in by hand even. So sad. When I do this kind of thing like on a Subaru pancake engine, It's a fine touch to know if your spot on. A heavy hand won't know the difference until the damage is already done. I still think the timing belt replacement was the ultimate demise of the valve. Explains the valve guide seal leak also.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars KEVIN MESSICK says:

I would go ahead and pull the other head and have it rebuilt also, it will probably be giving trouble also in the near future.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Isaac Smith says:

If I'm not mistaken on your trip to the Machine Shop in the middle of your center console it look like an HK not a Glock

    Apprentice opportunity Mr. O

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars UncleMarks DIY Automotive Fix it channel says:

It will be a sad day when many of these older experienced guys are gone. A good business for someone to get into, but again you need experience. Getting harder to find these shops too. Without them, a guy is stuck either buying new, or reman and both are too expensive and unnecessary.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank. l says:

I would probably replace the engine with a JDM motor from Japan.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Buglioli says:

Guys been doing it for longer than I've been alive and he's probably forgotten more than I know love it excellent complement those kind of people are what made America strong too few of those guys around anymore appreciate it, EO

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Buglioli says:

Definitely take the shotgun somebody might be hiding up in the Finger Lakes and come down and try to give us a hard time

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SilverDollarSaloon says:

MY guess is the owner of the car never did oil changes on a routine timely manor.Oil leakage past the valve guides is the reason for the carbon buildup on the valves. If you do not change your oil and let it turn Black then this is the type of engine you get.I would like to see the old valve guide seals.I would bet that they are as hard as a rock.I do not trust the Car Dealer ,They most likely knew that Cylinder was a no compression issue and just wanted to suck some money out of her.Dishonest to do all that work on her car and for the Dealer to tell her on her final visit that she needs a engine replacement. That is so Crooked of that car dealer.Cases like this makes it clear that People who know nothing about car mechanics are a sucker for a dishonest car dealer. There are plenty of them out there too.IF that was my Head being remanufactured,I would use all new Valves,Springs,Guides,ETC.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Max Diputs says:

While I appreciate the videos in this series about the Ridgeline as they are high quality, I feel like I am missing something. Is there a reason he calls it a Hondew? I have heard of people saying all sorts of weird stuff about honda, Hando, Handa, etc… but never Hondew. Is it a North East thing?

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Man says:

The other head should be done too

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars krASHExxx says:

Slow down! You're going too fast!!!

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dufus says:

I'm an older guy[76] and i had my stroker engine built by one of these older gents back in February. He showed me the many flaws/mistakes the previous builder had left. We really learn the hard way as to how important that experience is. The younger guys just need time to get there. Not enough new ones coming up either. I thought i knew a thing or two about engines, boy did he give me an education as I assisted in building this stroker. Things you can only learn working side by side with these racing engine experts. Much respect……

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Freddy Flintstoned says:

Seems this Hondoo has direct injection. Sooty ,dirty ,oily, intake valves seem to be the norm.

Glad you shifted into hyper speed.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Boorman says:

Is the engine shop in Penn Yan still open? We used to take stuff there. Seems a little closer to Avoca than Woodhull too.

I just want to say, that's a beautiful country side there Eric. Thanks for sharing!

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nicholas Andre says:

Iโ€™d be suspicious the dealership gave the valve a decent thump before they realized their mistake. Little bit bent, doesnโ€™t seat, valve guide wears, carbon builds up and the problem worsens.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nathan Allen Pinard says:

    Just curious.
