In this video come along as I replace the timing belt, water pump, idler and tensioner on this 2008 Honda Pilot with a "J35" engine. This application may apply to many Honda and Acura models with the J35 engine such as the Ridgeline Pilot and the Odyssey. Although there are slight differences I find they are all very similar.

Your video saved me $1100 in labor, can’t say enough good things about your work.

PS- my timing tensioner was blown out and clacking like crazy. Local mechanic said it was a rod knock and would be $5-6k for a motor. Sounds like a sewing machine now.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lala Jee says:

Honda dealership charge me $1100. Just to replace a leaking tensioner.

Thank you thank you for this video. I just did my 2015 Pilot, and I'm a timing belt noob. Found myself consulting parts of this video since the instructions that came with the kit weren't very good. The Lisle impact socket did wonders for getting my crank pulley bolt off. Wasn't sure my 450 ft lb air impact was going to have enough oomph even with this special socket, but it worked. I will say I envy being able to do it with a lift, I got pretty tired of having to switch between working from up above and crawling underneath with the creeper.

Hey Eric I've turned the crankshaft more times that I can count. Each time I get the Crank and Front Cam to TDC, the rear continues to be a tooth or so off. I've removed the spark plugs and have done the rotation with the timing belt still on. What does one have to do to get the rear cam aligned? Its a 2013 Honda Pilot btw.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don Siebert says:

Eric, what brand of belt and water pump do use you use ?

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Schreaders auto repair llc. says:

Eric, there is a bulletin on this Odyssey for the aluminum engine mount and the idler pulley Clarence the spec is 95 mm if it is not 95 mm clearance you potentially can develop a slight squeak. Also there is a little shim that goes behind that idler. Probably already know about this because you are an awesome technician. Love your show!

Good job, especially commentary and videography.

Did this to my wife's 2005 honda pilot in the driveway. Difficulty I would state 10 out of 5 had no power tools or air tools.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Payne says:

Hi Eric, thanks for your show, I admire your hard work and how complete you do a job. I have purchased that special 19 mill socket and have a kobalt 1000 ft lb tourque impact air wrench, should that be powerful enough to remove the crank bolt on my 2011 ridgeline? Thanks

CAUTION: Do not purchase Honda timing belt kits from eBay or Amazon. The majority of timing belt kits on eBay and Amazon are counterfeit, even though the sellers often times have 95-100% feedback ratings. It is well known that these fake timing belt kit components fail quickly (belt, bearings, water pump, etc.). A simple GOOGLE search for "counterfeit Honda timing belt" will yield plenty of results.

The fake components are very good copies, but upon close inspection and comparison to true OEM components you will see the differences. Honda forums are loaded with horror stories from using the counterfeit kits.

If you want to save some money, Rock Auto has a quality timing belt kit by AISIN that is highly recommended on Honda forums.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dalton Rubin says:

Hey Mr. O! Thank you for posting this video! Acura quoted me $2,000 for a timing belt job on my TL. The kit only cost me $200 and a Saturday of my time. Thanks again!

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars B Tsuyuki says:

THis is great video on how to replace the timing belt at 100k,,but there is also another thing that needs to be replaced,,,the oil pump o-ring seals. These also fail at about 100k. Also the o-ring seal for the oil filter adapter. These are cheap parts, but can cause a repeat timing belt job when the oil leaks on the new timing belt.

I hate, loath, despise motor mounts. That is all.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charles Tarr says:

Thanks! I’ve done two timing belts but years in between and I saw a used ridge line and knew it had an interference engine and am considering buying it so I can be laughed at for driving a white collar pickup. Maybe not, on 2nd thought. This last winter made my 2001 Tacoma almost as ugly as I am.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars neville says:

I had a 2003 Honda CRV with a 2.0L IVTEC which I thought was similar to a Pilot. I asked my garage to replace the timing belt. Both they and I was surprised when I had a phone call later uthat day to tell me that it had a timing chain.

How is it that the US Pilot has a timing belt? Isn't it a 2.0L IVTEC? It was a brilliant car I only had to change the knock sensor (difficult to get at).

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brad Burkhalter says:

Eric, thanks for what you do, great expertise and knowledge. Hopefully it will help some of the young people become interested in mechanics. It’s really a wonderful field.

Timing belts are the hardest things but for me a serpentine belt is harder than a timing belt it only took like a couple of sailor mouths to get it on

    great video thanks

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Noah Kuzel says:

You have my sympathy. The J35 engine is of horrible note. Everything on the back side of the engine is guaranteed to fall behind it and land in this one spot that is damn near impossible to get at. The heads get pulled with the catalytic converters still attached, and great care has to be taken when lowering them into place. You have one spot, and one spot alone to get the back converter down and into the hole before you can slide the whole thing left or right enough for it to land on the dowl pins. Garbage, just garbage I say.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Barnaby Tack says:

Wow I spent 2 hours to get that pulley bolt out at home with crappy tools. I had to cobble a 6' breaker bar and then stand on it. When it came loose it sounded like a gun shot. Eric removed it in 3 seconds with his uranium socket.
