Well this may be pretty run of the mill for some of us but this is a very common task or challenge I am faced with all through out the year. A customer will drop off a spindle and a bearing and want it replaced. So come along and I'll show you how it is done.

So I just pressed my hub in without supporting the inner race from the bottom… and destroyed my $50 bearing. Worst part is I knew I needed to support it, just made a silly mistake while figuring out the other parts of this. Expensive lesson in correct bearing pressing that I might do a couple more times in my life? I guess so lol

Thanks for this. Haven’t used my shop press much and using the Astro bearing puller kit doesn’t work well for me off of the vehicle. Just finished up a perfect set of civic front knuckles after forgetting to support the inner race on the first one. Great vids as always and I always refer to your catalog of videos if I’m ever in doubt. Thanks again.

Have the wheel spindles ever separated from the hub while driving or cornering if the friction from the press fit is all that keeps it together?
Is the drive axle circlip acting as the backup ?
When I was a mechanic years ago, I built up a collection of old outer races which I ground down a tad to make perfect drivers for next time. I still have them somewhere, along with a lot of inner spacers and thick washers etc all kept together on a f'kin' long bolt. It seems young mechanics haven't learnt the basics of never pressing 'through' a bearing. It will shorten their life a lot.
I miss my presses . Had both 12 and 20 tons. The 12 was great for u-joints. Made many " press toys" over the years. Black Pipe (schedule 40) makes for good cups. Great job on supporting the knuckle assembly.
With that type of press it is important to make sure everything is straight, otherwise if off the jack will "kick out" and bend the guides.
One day a "hippie" I worked with asked to borrow my press . After the morning "wake and bake" , he managed to bend the guides! Needless to say I was not very happy!

I dont have access to a shop press but i have a slide hammer kit and a ball joint press, will the ball joint press clear most knuckles u think? Or I got a large C-clamp I could use the plates with maybe.
I bought a shop press for like 50 bucks so glad I did I never thought I would need it as much as I do now, both my cars take press in bearings
I pushed the bearing out the wrong way… will that have wrecked the nuckle?

My two cents is getting a shop press is not enough: don't think you can get a 12-ton shot press from harbor freight for $130 and be safe and I'm speaking from first hand.
You will need to invest 50 to $150 in different adapters and arbor plates. I so totally wish I just gave pep boys $70 per side to do my bearings after I destroyed one spindle and one shot press which harbor freight was great to replace for $36.
I have the same spindle and that's how I broke the presses I could never get it lined up straight and that's also how I shirt off one of the ears and that was after watching this video!

I've had a press for
35 years and only used it maybe 20 times. When you need it, you gotta have it. But the set up shimming time is a killer. For bearings, even drop offs like this one, I still use my OTC GRAPPLER. Much quicker, easier set up and I DON'T have to pull it off the car saving having to send it out for an alignment.

You still can do this type of bearing on the car, you need this bearing kit with 20-25 sizes of discs and big fitting screw, about 50-60 for the kit
The legs getting away really need something skinny Rented a hub tamer and it still didn't have enough adapters to finish the job safely.

Most excellent, enjoyed. When I was a younger dude, I remember using some dry ice and throwing parts in the oven, to my Mom’s fury. From what I can recall they just about dropped in. Getting the bearings out !, I seem to conveniently have no memory of that deed. Many thanks.
I usually use a large socket with a hammer to knock out the wheel hub before going near the press

Go to HF get the 20Ton air bottle jack and swap that hydraulic. Makes life so much easier
I took my wheel hub off to my mate to press the new bearing in 1 track rod end a ball joint later and many swear words
Unbelievable. I've got the exact same Continental press. Bought it at an auction I attended by chance. It was missing the jack, so I just used a bottle jack I had at home. Guess what, it's the exact same bottle jack too.
