I had a 96 Dodge Neon given to me if I could get running and out of her driveway. It was overheating so I got a bigger radiator and after it blew a head gasket I got rid of it. Thd provious owner twice had new head gaskets replaced. A frien of mine had a 2000 Neon and the transmission pan bolts were pulling the threads from the pan. They are a throwaway car.

3/4 of a 1/2 of turn is 3/8 of a turn. Easy math. You said figure that math out, well there u go…

Brilliant kit, i didnt use exactly that one but a much simpler Napa one for around $60 CA. A couple years ago my daughters boyfriend decided to change the sparkplugs/wires on her early 2000's VW golf as it had an occasional miss fire especially in damp weather. I dont remember the exact cyl now but the spark plug had gone through a total nuclear meltdown, there was no top electrode left, very little center electrode and ceramic left and half of the threads down one side of a long thread spark plug were just eroded and gone. I can only imagine the damage to the cyl head itself. There were zero threads left after the plug was removed. You could take the new plug and simply push/pull it out of the hole, zero thread grab. I'm an almost 60 year old backyard mechanic and have never, ever seen a spark plug like that. I was a little careless in tapping the hole for the insert so it didnt sit nice and flush against the head but no matter. Car was a beater anyway and ran finest kind after that. So if you strip threads out of a spark plug hole, dont lose your mind, it really is a simple straight forward easy fix weather its a lawn mower or a luxury car.

What’s the grease you use to keep the shading from going into the cylinder

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff LaLone says:

I’m watching this because the #3 plug in my Fit felt like getting off the highway before the rest of the car. Then I hear this gem: “Only thing that runs? Honda. Of course.” 🤣

Hoping someone will see this and if your watching Dr. O you're likely worth your salt:)
2006 Honda Ridgeline, COP design – plug just spins while attempting to remove. If I can get the plug out no problem with a proper time-sert regarding the repair. Can't get the plug out…any thoughts ?

just a thought with vacuum out the shaving what if you packed the vacume tip with those flexable bendy straws to improvise and be able to get into the nook and cranny of cylinder? i seen this done as a hack for cleaning coin tray/glove box so you dont suck up coins but may work for this as a way to get into the edge of cylinder?

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Curry says:

Really need help, my 08 civic shot a plug and when I replaced all 4, the car doesn’t run anymore.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pete Vanderlinden says:

Just did this, giving 2 part high temp jb weld a try instead of red loctite. I guess we'll see. Thanks!

Great video I'm old enough to forget about heilcoilsbut remember how good they work if installed right I see other comments about being expensive but well worth the price if done right

Recently discovered your channel and like your videos a lot. I’m a fellow upstate New Yorker who’s been wrenching on rusty cars for nearly 40!years. This one resonates with me because I have a similar vehicle with a similar problem. Wish I’d taken my daughters 05 neon to someone like you for its blown out plug. No one wanted to touch it. My first attempt wound up with the helicoil breaking down inside the cylinder and now it has a misfire and probably should replace the head.

    Thanks, was interesting to see!

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nobody says:

Just curious, before tapping out the plug hole for the helicoil, how did you determine the threads were damaged? Given how loose the other plugs are, is it possible for that plug to have simply backed out without damaging the threads?

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars G says:

"Only thing that runs Honda of course"😂😂🤣🤣🤣

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars claymore cluepile says:

i don't know fukkall about it but that is such an agreeable little car engine to work on with such good access that you probably should have taken that air plenum cover off or whatever it is to make dealing with all the grease and dirt easier while you were reaming out the threaded hole and cutting new threads

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steven James says:

Reminded me of my wife when you asked how long you’ve been married, “I don’t know”!

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Johnny Sechrist says:

Red loctite or sleeve retainer loctite? Why no antiseize on the sparkplug?

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Russell Dinwiddie says:

I'm impressed very conscientious in what you do. I am a retired Millwright of45 years auto mechanic before that.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pete Pete says:

I especially liked the way you pointed out the loose plugs, which is usually the cause of blown out plugs.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hi Scifi says:

Judging by the state of the handbrake.. 6 clicks and still rocking as you turned the wrench. It seems as if the car has not been serviced in 3 or more years. We had an Austin Alegro that the handbrake went loose as the hydo-suspension self leveled on a hill, made parking a bit of a lottery.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charlie Kelle says:

Perfect job on the blown spark plug only suggestion is after all that cleaning fluid I would have put a taste of oil into that cylinder because of all the oil has been cleaned off the cylinder walls those rings and cylinder wall need lube or it can score the cylinder or snap a ring

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Meredith says:

You need to do some advertisements for the brake cleaner you use I never seen ANYBODY have so much fun with brake cleaner in my life than you Eric is cracked me up everytime I watch you with a can of brake cleaner .

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dennis Geroux says:

I still have my Heli Coils from years ago. VW bugs were notorious for blowing out the plugs.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phillip Hedley says:

Yea my old favorite thing was when I was now retired working at Ford dealerships. For that repair I would put the piston at bottom of stroke and then used generic shaving cream to fill the cylinder to prevent any shavings from going inside the cylinder. When threading was done I then started the engine to blow everything out. Worked like a charm.

Do you have flexible borescope you can use to see into the hole?

…RE-ARRANGE THE LETTERS IN "NEON", AND IT SPELLS "NONE"-!!!

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bruce Coleman says:

I tape my inspection camera to a piece of mechanic’s wire instead of a screwdriver. Since you can bend the wire, it’s easier to see the edges of the piston.

Ha! The brake cleaner sound effect lol 👏to the vid editor

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars KarazyKidAtHeart says:

Watching u shove the shavings off with bare finger made me cringe, how'd u not get a ton of them stuck in ur fingers!? If one of them shavings were within ten foot of mine it'd be stuck in mine for sure

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars KarazyKidAtHeart says:

The shaving cream original purpose joke had me wonder for a min,. As when u told it was monotone n then u said no truth to it at all. Lol I laughed too much at that. But I watched so many repair vids on YouTube n urs are by far the best, most informative n I legit sat and watched 4 hours of ur bids before realizing it. Keep up the awesome work n thanks from us do it yourself /repair it yourself guys!
