In this video I replace the rear parking brake shoes on a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. It is a fairly simple straight forward task and is the same on most vehicles with rear disc brakes. - Enjoy!

Thanks to your video I had the confidence to rip into my kids 2007 Scion Tc to replace the parking brake shoes. After 3 adjustments got them working safely and securely. Love your videos. Thank you again.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars André Vidal Soares says:

Is there any relation between the parking brake system and the regular brake system on these cars? I had a brake line leak, went to a shop to fix it but they claimed my parking brake cable is bad too and need to be replaced. Brake pedal still going all the way even after they fixed the leak. I think they did something else in purpose to make me have the parking cable replaced next time since my brakes are still not 100%. My parking brake works fine so far…

There was another spring I didn’t see you put back??? Can you help?

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars uberbloop says:

Those are brake pads for a disk brake. Not shoes for a drum brake.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars eric bailey says:

You made that drum reassembly look easy. I've always hated doing drum brakes.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Olivier Fontaine says:

I'm from Canada and I always wheezy wheel the shoes' contact points (and put silver never seize). Like you once said, "a little never seize goes a LONG way".

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ronald Garvie says:

Love the vidoes eric o funny down to earth, keep up the great work.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DAVE KNOTT says:

haha Ken Block is a beast! M rear driver ebrake has been boarderline seized for years. 2011 Kia optima, similar. I keep having to rework it, is there anything I can swap out with rebuilt or new parts to prevent this constant issue. Now is see the rear driver brake pads clumping up and perhaps piston is toasted. That thing is a never ending issue on my car. Thanks for your video and feedback appreciated.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ramblin Man says:

Dumb question, but are there shoes on both sides of the vehicle?

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charles Schuster says:

all that anti-seize on the hub face WILL get spun outward to the parking brake shoe contact surface… grease or anti-seize there … and your customer will be back! and HEY, no anti-seize on the lug bolts? Customer better be male, no female will be able to change a tire when the lug nut(s) and stud(s) are rusted together.

Overall a well done video, could have been edited a good deal shorter, and note the torque specs for the caliper bracket bolts.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charles Schuster says:

You used (a lot) more anti-seize where the brake shoes contact the backing plate than needed…. don't want it to get on the shoes…. I'd have suggested just a thin fingertip smear, maybe 1/4 of what you used. But that's just me.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lazlow Behen says:

I came here to figure out where mine were. Turns out the previous owner decided to remove them. No wonder the parking brake didn't work at all

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Efrain Torres says:

    Dingnnnn donnng

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Nielsen says:

    Truly excellent video. Many thanks!

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars eclipser2004 says:

Just at it here today. I think my problem is not the shoes but the linkage after the cable joins the bracket that moves back and forth. Those are the rusty seized up parts. Outside the drum and going into the drum. I think you called it the actuator assembly.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars rlmclaurine says:

God Bless u man! Thank u for this video!

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lx Fx says:

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don Fout says:

it is not a 4wheel drive and so that hub won't be spinning while the front wheels are, at least not while it's on the hoist… can't fool me, I'm as sharp as a bowling ball!!

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel MacDuff says:

It is not that easy to put back the upper spring !!!

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars anthony bowers says:

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ricardo Gonzalez says:

Wished the 2012 Sonata was as easy. One caliper mounting bolt covered up by upper control arm. Lucky you have the 09 Sonata to work on.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ravensfolyfe 1996 says:

    Great details.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scott Stawicki says:

Nice simple straight forward video. Thank you.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Al Dunn says:

my 2011 has U-clips to hold the shoes instead of the "normal" cups on this '09. The U-clips are a big pain in the hooey for me to get compressed and removed from the pin. That round cup on the spring is so much easier to deal with. Why did they do change it?!

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars B-MAN says:

YAY! a parking Brake Video…rare to see any on youtube…Nice to see rust proofing mentioned as well,..I get my Fiesta Sprayed from Krown as well……going to do it when I get my Challenger SRT 392 soon… those 6 piston Brembo with the 2 pc rotors is going to be "fun"…..

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 93 Stang says:

Tried adjusting the e-brake shoes to get it to catch (took the rotor off) and of course it still doesn't wanna catch when I pull my e-brake. 😭
