    Nice to se your effort and energy into that and not giving up. but the reason for the struggle is simple, your doing it wrong. sorry to say. replacing U-joints is a mechanics first first lesson on drivetrain and that is not the way it's taught. Normal time was 6-8 minutes to replace a U-joint. I think your video works anyway because it shows how struggle and hard work gets you there. In the end it's the result that counts.

    I believe the lift platform has enough give that it is robbing you of enough force. Use a bigger hammer and get down to the cement floor.

    Thanks, Eric! I used to do all the normal and "easy" tasks myself until I got to be in my 60s and disabled! Now, I still do what is easy for me to get to and have a shade treee mechanic friend that helps me with anything I can't do and that requires a shop!
    This pretty much the same method my dad toaught me! He was a master mechanic on both diesel and gas engine vehicles! of course that was MANY years ago! He passed in 1971!
    I just needed a refresher course! Your video was preceise ns I appreciated that you left in the problems! They aren't uncommon and, as long as one doesn't go nuts and get too frustrated, as you show, they CAN be remedied!

    So wailing on it with a socket under it isn’t any different than using a ball joint press if you think about it-the ear is taking any force if the cup is stuck. Using a ratchet handle instead of an impact, I think, is less likely to bend an ear of the yoke than the pound like mad method-I’m doing my 2007 Tundra’s center carrier bearing soon and will be replacing all three universals, so I’ll find out which method works best-wish me luck!

    A carnage , it always is. Unfortunately the market is plagued by ill fitting parts that don't always resemble the original parts in terms of fit and sometimes , even function . We are provided also with " look alike " parts that All they are good for is to make sure that you spend additional time installing it just to find out that it really does not work ! Also worth of mention are Doorman parts that are engineered to fail and sure to to provide you with a warranty claim down the road when they fail ! And we are kind of expected to do the labor again for "free"????

    I just replaced a U-joint in my old Chevy 4×4 yesterday. I used a hydraulic press, because I had one and by golly I'm going to get some use out of it! Worked okay. Listening to this video made me want to put on my ear muffs (hearing protectors). I hope you wear eye protection when using that hammer, Eric!

    I bought a large C-clamp at Harbor Freight. It drives the new cups in slowly so you don't drop needles out of place. Obviously the hammer works, but not dropping needles saves a lot of time.

    I felt Professor Weber cringe several times during your "practical" repair. Banging on the thrust bearing (where were they?) was a concern of his. Also checking the center of rotation by insuring proper clip dimension. Of course Weber doesn't charge by the hour and doesn't deal with crusty!

    I used to have to change u joints a lot on my old 73 Power Wagon.. gotta line those yokes up in phase.. I used a big bench vise, and pushed the cups out with a nut to go inside the yoke, and a socket on the opposite side to allow the bearing cup to slide out…. It worked most of the time… haha.. tnx for the vids.

    Been doing them this way for years, but I have to admit I did my daughter's 04 Z71 this past year and that aluminum shaft with nylon factory, inner outer replacement clips wasn't fun! Took forever to even get the correct joints…ended up taking the shaft to the parts store, the local store… national chain stores were no help

    a wooden v block or two would support the shaft and stop it flopping around. Groove it into a short length of 6×4 (150×100 for metricated people) hardwood and you're set. 🙂

    WRT torching the thing. The freeze trick could work for removal if you sit a lump of dry ice on the cup after pulling the clip out. Might be a load less whaling on stiffies if it works
