I'm a very big fan of Bilsteins, I've had mixed results with KYBs, KYBs on a previous car were quite good, KYBs on my 3/4ton, just adequate. Bilsteins significantly better all around. Only vehicle I've had any experience with FOX shocks, were their high performance off road variety, so rather hard to judge their on road behavior when they are designed for off road style….I will agree that they are definitely better than Ranchos.

My litmus test for shocks are some of the older brick/paver roads. Old shocks, it was just a bounce fest. The KYBs on my truck, felt much more stable, but it just felt a little like floating as the steering wanted to wander more like steering a boat for lack of a better comparison, the Bilsteins…significant improvement in both handling and comfort….still a brick road, but it felt like things were staying connected without being overly harsh. The worst part in my case, was the price difference between the two at the time was maybe $20/ea.

Laying down on the ground working on your vehicle sucks that's what a lot of us have to do welcome to our world RAY. I still disagree with spaying cold water on a warm engine nice way to cause damage. My two things I disagree with what you do otherwise I think you do good work. I don't think Ray will respond to this comment but something I had to say.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Montgomery says:

I hate these DirtyMaxs, take up to much parking spaces and driving lanes, mist drivers dont take in to account of the dial tyres and body at the rear. Almost got run over by the rear wheels when some guy pulled out from a parking space.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mchlmcbrd says:

really wished the sway bar links for sonoma worked like that, they have a regular nut at the end. so unless you can compress the bushings first there isnt enough thread to really start the nut

Great looking shocks, may have to put some on my Sierra, btw,,they couldn't have made the front shock fit the factory mount on the lower control arm?? wth ? Still nice shocks, and another great video.

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mr Ed says:

Maybe I’m just old, but I would have chocked the front tires before jacking the rear. Learned that the hard way with tractor work.

It's funny to see the make shift bandage. My dad was an autobody tech and I remember him also coming home with the same and back to work the same day. Just don't do the same he did of risking health to a paycheck. Career days will be numbered if you do. Mgmt will be your next job to continue.

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ilberc Gross says:

  58. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg Riddle says:

Dang – no fresh grease visible on front grease gun fittings? I think you admitted that your front end steering assembly needs overhauled, along with the brakes. Can't wait for at video.

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Nadeau says:

I would also have a stand jaak to back up the floor jack.

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars BillFromAZ says:

Ray! Is that a gooseneck ball joint under there were you were removing the second shock from the rear?

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg Riddle says:

Ray – how much rust is holding your trailer ball in place at your truck bed? Can you explain what's going on under the bed to haul your trailer? Sketchy lookin', dude. Did you replace your carrier bearing on the drive shaft?

I chucked a set of Monroe Load Adjusters on my own work truck. Only a half ton, but the added capability when hauling REALLY heavy loads, not to mention the off road traction while in the back country is great.

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bryan Bailey says:

Was I seeing things, or did you have a ball hitch under the bed of the truck. On one of the cross beams??

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Robbins says:

I wish I would have put Fox shocks on my Jeep when I lifted it. My 2014 Silverado z/71 is in need of new shocks but really can’t justify the cost of Fox as I’m thinking of dreading it off…

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Hecht says:

I wish you would put a jack stand under it before you crawl under with just a floor jack holding it up. Basic safety for all of us home garage floor mechanics who don't have a lift.

  73. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph zendejas says:

Can I get the old rancho shocks?

  74. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Keith Dodds says:

Low mileage for any diesel engine, and not surprised it's not sponsored. It's your personal vehicle. Now, give us something worth watching the video for, as it deepens your pockets. You are, after all, posting this video for your own monetary gain. Therefore one question remains unanswered: Is your employer profiting from these videos, or is he/she losing money by allowing you to repair/replace parts on company time/equipment/tools?

  75. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars orng1 says:

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Palkovic says:

    Thanks!

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Thorpe says:

I'm not a mechanic mechanic (just a DIY'er mechanic) and was wondering why Ray flipped the shocks. The Rancho's on the rear he had on there had the rod up near the top and the piston/barrel at the bottom. When he put in the Fox ones he put the piston/barrel at the top and the rod side at the bottom. Logically thinking, I don't see why it would matter which way they're installed, but was wondering why he flipped them??

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thrillhunter says:

the fox will ride a bit firmer than the shit ranchos. some people like the marsh mellow ride of stit shocks tho.

  79. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fred Walker says:

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars triton302 says:

Question for you Ray. I'm looking at getting a used truck, crew cab and 4WD, from about the 2000's to 2010's era. Hauling stuff mostly and transporting my two kids as well. Based on your experience with a vast variety of truck repairs, what would you recommend in that time frame that isn't normally a rustbucket or overall turd?

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bryanviper says:

You should pull an Eric O & spray those surface rust areas with Fluid Film to help protect it. Also for your windshield you should apple Aquapel since it rains a lot down in FL you will love it & it will last around 6 months.

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SomeGuyInSandy says:
