I puzzles me why some people even bother with taking their cars to a mechanic when they all along had no intention to fix it. These people just waste other people's valuable time.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Edward Morrison says:

I had the same problem with my 2012 Buick regal…Buick could not find the issue…this only happened in the winter..turns out the Buick rebuilt the engine and the problem stopped..

You seem to have some really stupid customers?

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SuGGoz says:

To much coolent. How will the coolent expand if it's filled the the brink?

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James VAN zijl says:

Sometimes , being "reckless" in authorising a repair comes back to bite the vehicle owner with major engine damage. What happens in winter to a stuck open stat ?.MMM methinks they will be back……

I have been watching your videos for several months now. I love how you are so upbeat, honest, and willing to share your professional knowledge! I am a retired school teacher and if I could teach half as well as you then I would have been good! You are an awesome teacher and a kind-hearted person! I am hooked on watching your videos that is for sure! I even subscribed to YouTube No ads because I did not want to have hesitation in your videos! Thanks so much for making my life brighter and happier! You are awesome!

I did, I never worked without authorization. To much risk on the down side. It is good to be proactive in some cases, but not as a jobing tech.

I think you might have been used. Ray you did the work and this guy will take it home , go to Autozone ,get the part and change it himself! Does your shop get a Diagnostic Fee?

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Parsons says:

Best part of this is I’m learning how to better describe issue to the mechanic!

Never start a job without a work order.
I've had to learn the hard way myself.

I always hated to give exact estimates with parts needed . I waste too much time this way if the job was refused. I started to give an free minimum estimate any more than this price , I would advise customer….

Here I am, watching this video for a second time, and I keep saying: don't do it, don't tear it apart, but I know that you do it anyways. Oh well. It was fun anyways. 🙂

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars B A says:

Owner is going to find out the hard way, replacing a thermostat isn't as easy as it used to be.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars C Ros says:

Sorry outcome. But you are the best…

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GUY USSIA says:

That owner is an idiot !!

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DAD TYPE 2 says:

Well you tried to be a head of the game so the owners didn't have to wait long which is awesome, and it just turned against you but that's really not your fault Ray, yes you did proactive work for a good thing, not your fault the owners are a D-Bag who as one I read in here comment was they just wanted the diag work and do the replacement themselves. I do all my own work having been a mechanic now for 33 years the only time I bring a vehicle in is for state inspection, which my last one took 4 freaking hours!!! If I could do that myself from home I would lol. In fact I have a timing belt on a Kia soul that needs to be changed along with that camshaft oil seal so it will be fun. On a lark I checked around and it's like 1k-2k to have this done, holy cow I thought, I'm really gonna be saving money on this one. So glad I was a smart young man and way long ago not so far back the earth was cooling lol, but glad I got into working on vehicles.
A great story my then GF now wife had a mechanic she took her car too and she would tell me what he said and a lot of the time he made no sense. So she started to have a misfire which I fixed new boots and plugs, well for whatever reason she took the car down for him to inspect and he told her she needed new plugs after I changed them which thank God showed her he was ripping her off. I went down to the guy with the empty plug boxes and gave him a good word or two. I got my plugs back and we didn't pay for anything, she never went back to him. I told him yeah I bet they came out super easy huh since I just put them in a day ago, you retard you can't see perfectly good plugs New at that or you just into cheating people you should be ashamed tearing up my profession you disgrace waste of flesh. Lol. Then years ago I can't even remember the car I had but it had a free oil change and the guy says you need a new cabin air filter and I was like really and how are you going to change it, he told me, and I was like that so fascinating especially since that car doesn't have a cabin air filter. So not even for free what the heck kind of thing I do my own oil change which is super easy of course, sometimes you think well yes I can do it but if it's free why not take advantage of it, because there are bad eggs who try to take advantage of you. Not all of us are bad, and I'm happy to see Ray, and South Main Auto with Eric showing that there are a few good guys left. There are more us good guys out there admits the sea of corruption. Okay off my soap box. Thumbs up Ray, keep it up Brother!!!

I had a broken thermostat on my previous alfa romeo and that cost me a fortune to replace. Because it was on a difficult position. 😭

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jason Burton-Woods says:

Thanks Ray, I felt that disappointment when the customer turned down the repair, but like a smart commenter below said, I come for the diagnostic explainations, so the final swap/repair doesn't matter. Great, no, excellent content.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars joseph thomas says:

Me personally hate using the drain valve on the radiator , had a couple not seal back

Dont you go get all Stoichiometric on us.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard McClurg says:

How dumb! Why would you take a car to get it fixed and turn around and say forget it I'm not gettin it done. Waste of time and money for the mechanic.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin says:

I had this this code about a month ago. Never had any issues with it for over a year since I've had the car. I'm pretty sure it wasn't happy about the -15 degree weather for about a week. Since resetting the code, and warmer weather, I have not had the issue. My battery on the other hand, did not like the weather. I had to bring it inside to charge it. It's barely a year old. After a full slow charge, no problems since.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mando N says:

Nice to know I’m not the only one that gambles and loses with certain jobs. I always said this only happens to me. Real experts never go thru this. Then this video pops up and you experience the gamble and loss.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Katie Luv says:

lol. I can't believe they didn't want to thing fixed, but wanted it diagnosed. Guess you at least got money for the diagnostics.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John T says:

Customer leaves shop and monitors "Rainman Ray's Repairs" on YouTube to see how to disassemble his vehicle and complete the repairs himself . . .

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charles Lease says:

Idiot you never do anything like that until you have the OK

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Malcolm Hutcheon says:

Kinda strange that the engine never got up to temp – we usually drop the thermo altogether on the race bikes in the summer. Means warm-up time is a little longer but they always come up to temp. It's a shame we didn't get to see the thermo replaced in this one.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Brzoska says:

They should have just let you go ahead and replace the thermostat. A vehicle not running at operating temperature is bad in the long run for any internal combustion vehicle.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Wesley Monske says:

Fan is not working. Check sensor on radiator. Cars lie. Computers lie too. Follow flow chart from all data!

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Anthony Pilkjaer says:

You did a good thing for a customer by replacing their coolant. So you did you part.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Adam Bosworth says:

Sort of surprised the customer didn't want you to repair it. Assuming he wanted to do it himself, he's already paying for an hour of diagnostics. I guess he'd have to pay an extra hour for the replacement? I mean, I've done thermostats myself and it's not hard but having to deal with draining the coolant is just such a pain in the ass. I'd probably have just had the shop do it at that point, even though I can do it myself.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charles Letterman says:

Hi Ray. Maybe someone else has already mentioned this but with a stuck open thermostat there would be noticeable immediate coolant circulation observable in the radiator….. That is if there is a radiator cap.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jerry Moore says:

Are you using 100 percent coolant or is the premixed 50/50 type. Where I'm from we run a 50/50 blend.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Clay Coates says:

Don't you hate bitchy customers But this is in the Wonderful Months Oct. Nov. Dec.
no one wants there car worked on been there and done that and if one is in a job shop they are just wasting your time

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Masso1973 says:

What kind of customers do you have there, that they don’t even change a thermostat? Peanuts… Go walk.

Exactly. I get the same in my plumbing business sometimes.
I appreciate the ride along and explanation of the system & it's operation. Troubleshooting is key.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Elliott says:

They went to the trouble of getting car towed and diagnosed but won't do a thermostat? Think of all the extra engine wear from running cold, carbon buildup and emissions system consequences!

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheHighKirk says:

I think it's important to note how many times the advice of service is ignored for any reason. Some people are simply managing the decline of a vehicle while others are just gambling with fate, and hoping they don't get bit too badly.

My Buick Roadmaster limited wagon has always run at 1/4 way between cold and hot the entire time I have owned it.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ifixem says:

Positive criticism: Disagreed on a stuck open t-stat ever causing overheating, even on extended heat soak. Ecm logic saw a discrepancy in related temp over warm up timing cycle, as you stated. Ecm then prohibits a/c permission, and a message pops up on the dash, why? If engine temps are too cold, why ban a/c? 2 reasons: Software detects a temp range fault, it doesn't care if the t-stat is stuck open or stuck closed; it only cares that it's sticking, and COULD start to stick the other way, it's obviously failing. 2: Constantly running a stuck open t-stat will keep engine temps too low, causing the temp sensor to "tattle" to the ecm that the engine is "still" warming up…in closed-loop operation, the coolant temp sensor has high priority over most sensors as a safe guard and Ecm will enrich the fuel mixture, constantly, to help avoid spark knock AND overheating; the drawback is potential damage to catalysts, poor fuel economy, possibly black smoke from exhaust. GM's solution was simple and brilliant honestly…disable their a/c until they fix it, less warranty claims?
